That is one great conversion you got there mate!! The posing and composition are excellent, as are all the little details. And you've given him the axe your DP Angron has. Nice bit of visual consistency. One small suggestion would be perhaps adding a raised collar, as it is such an iconic element of all of Angorn's depiction. Can't wait to see him finished

Thanks a lot, guys!

That axe is actually an approximation of the axe he was depicted with in most of the old artwork, including John Blanche's Angron sketch. And yeah, it also appears on Alex Boyd's artwork showing Daemon-Primarch Angron -- which is why my conversion of Angron in his daemon form has it as well.

You are perfectly right about the Khorne icon, of course -- it merely served as a placeholder. So I found something different for that area, and I also tweaked the pose a bit, because while it was basically sound, it also still had a very rigid and two-dimensional look to it. So I rotated the torso a bit, made some smaller adjustments -- really just some steps to make the model look more alive (and angry). Take a look:

As for the raised collar, he basically already has one, as the Custodes torso I've used for him forms an aquila-shaped collar behind his head. It's not quite as noticeable as I would have liked, however, due to the Butcher's Nails (very little space to fit it all into that cavity for the head).

Anyway, let me know what you think!

Thanks a lot, guys!

@ Nevelon: Wellll, good news: I think the XIII Legion is off the hook for this one: While I am planning a suitably crushed Marine for the space under his right foot, this is a depiction of Angron circa The Night of the Wolf (because there's a throwaway line in Betrayer about him discarding his original two-handed axe after that battle), so I think I'll be going with a fallen Space Wolf this time -- bet you're relieved now, eh?

In the meantime, I haven't got much to show you, except for a couple of less fuzzy pictures. I've taken the liberty of changing them to grayscale, so the GS parts should look somewhat less conspicuous. Anyway, here goes:

Still a couple of tweaks left to do, though -- for instance, he might need something to bulk out his waist just a bit.

Here's a shot from above, showing you how the cabling of his implants actually feeds back into the armour's cowling, much like it does in the artwork:

That being said, his collar is not quite as high as in the artwork -- I realised that it was a bit of a challenge to fit the head and the nails into that space and have it look natural enough, so the effect may be somewhat more subtle than I had originally planned.

Anyway, keep those comments coming!

Phew, dodged that chainaxe! Space Wolves totally have it coming to them.

There are a number of elements in the pic I don’t see you utilizing. Scalemail patterns on the armor and the dangling leather straps on the front of the shoulder pads are two.

I like the fact the collar is a bit subdued. Little bit over the top in the pic.

Looking very nice overall!

Just awesome work there he just oozes raw aggression and blind bellowing fury.

I also love how his face looks sallow and unhealthy. As if the butchers nails are beginning to take their toll.

Top notch

@ Nevelon: Yeah, the scalemail would be rather difficult to reproduce, given the fact that it's not a part of the torso I used for the conversion. And seeing how my GS skills don't really amount to anything much, I'd say don't hold your breath

The leather straps in front are going to happen, though, at least in one form or another.

@ Ynneadwraith: That Slaughterpriest head has to be one of the finest facial sculpts GW has ever managed to produce. Seriously!

He looks great! I wouldn't be too worried about not representing every individual element in the painting, especially as it's one image representing Angron at a single point in time on a timeline that runs from Pit Slave to Legion Primarch to Daemon Prince.

Thanks, mate!

Ron Saikowski, of From The Warp fame, once said something very applicable to the subject: When building a model to resemble a piece of artwork, as long as you get enough of the key elements right, you can afford quite a bit of leeway with the minor detail.

Anyway, I have yet another update regarding the latest plastic version of everybody's favourite angry Primarch: I always knew that he'd be getting some kind of cape, so I fooled around with a couple of different options yesterday. And the solution arrived from the unlikeliest of places, i.e. the cape that comes with the Chaos Terminator Lord kit. With a bit of cutting and fitting, I think I have already made it look pretty good, plus the cape also gave me the chance of incorporating those three spikes that are another staple of Angron in the classic artwork:

So here's Angron with his cape:

The cape also adds the right sense of bulk for a Primarch: I already liked the model well enough before, but it now has the massive, overmuscled look that sells it as a Primarch, if you ask me. Granted, some fine tuning may yet be in order, but I think I'm on the right track!

As always, let me know what you think!

The is a great add-on in my opinion, and I think I will have to agree that the cape visually seems to increase his size.

The pose overall is nice and - to me - screams, "are you not entertained?!"

Hmm, I do feel the cape needs to be a bit longer, it would give the character a bit more of that regal character. Kinda fitting, since despite all he's been through, Angron is still a 'son' of the Emperor, a prince if you will. That nobility is still there, even behind all that savagery and butchery.

Yes, definitely the right track! If anything, I'd be tempted to bunch up a bit more fur on the back of the cape, perhaps with some greenstuff? But really either way, your conversion definitely captures the mood.

Cheers, guys! Glad you like the cape!

@ malika2: Yeah, in an ideal world, the cape would indeed be a bit longer -- it seems a bit shortish because it's usually worn lower. Since I don't really have the skills to make it longer, though, I guess it'll have to stay that way. Then again, the good thing is that we still get a look at the detail on the model's back.

@ tinfoil: I actually thought the same thing -- might have to give it a try!

@ PatrickDiomedes: It's a torso from one of the new plastic Custodians. If you couldn't figure it out right away, I must have done something right

Sweet! I'm impressed by how well they scale size-wise, and how similar both their expression and general facial structure is between the GW Slaughterpriest and the FW model

Also, really does look like a progression from pit-fighter to general of the Imperium.

Thanks a lot, guys!

Regarding the size of the model, it must be noted that FW's Angron is still quite a bit taller -- he only doesn't look like it because he's posed at a very low crouch. But even so, I think the three of them look fairly good together.

@ Azazelx: Like I said, I want the model to represent Angron as he looked right up to the Night of the Wolf, where he first came to blows with one of his brothers (and that wonderful two-handed axe was lost). So about halfway through the Great Crusade, I'd say. There'll be a mangled Space Wolf on his base (below his right foot, to be exact ).

Hey guys,

I've added two leather straps to either side of Angron's chest, in order to add an element resembling the straps appearing in Wayne England's piece of artwork:

I'll say yay! It is reminiscent of the artwork and it adds to the regal feeling that started with the cape. And it helps hide these always akward, imho, joints between the arms and the torso. So

Thanks, guys! By and large, I'll be taking that as a vote in favour of the straps.

They are pretty big, admittedly -- would you believe I already shaved them down a fair bit? I do think the general clunkiness fits Angron's blunt and brutal style, though. And, if nothing else, I think I can make it work during the painting stage.

Good plan, and yeah the clunkiness does fit well with Angron's style.

I also feel that it does a good job of bridging the gap between pitfighter and general aesthetics-wise.
