So, I've done two recent armies using the Army Painter dips, which has provided me with two new armies that I haven't used all that much. Painting in this way is incredibly fast - I can turn out a couple of squads per day (not including the drying time), so I've decided to start a small army that will allow me to really spend time on the models. I'm finally painting up my Harlequin army, I'm planning to just do one or two in between other projects. No rush. At the moment, they look to be taking about a day per two models, which is nice and slow (for me!).

Here's the first two test models. I'll get some better pics once the light is better in the morning, but I have one very important question first..... The bases are cork rocks, on a oilslick water effect to fit in with some of my terrain. However, I can't decide between base trims? Black or grey?

Grey seems a bit weird 'framing' the oil slick, but on the other hand, the oil looks a bit odd next to 'regular' black. What do we think?

Black Trims, I think.

Will you be painting any old-school jetbikes to go with those old-school models?

Very nice indeed daft question how about going for black around the oil effects and grey around the stone? Both look a bit odd underneath each other and a third clour would do more harm than good.

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. It's because we are what we are. For all our faults we stand for law and light.

I would go for black, I think it's the best for base rims imho.

yeah,
I agree a third colour would be bad, but how about a darker gray/almost black?
I think it would be the best compromise..

The Harlequins are looking good.

Panic...

Tried this here. What do we think??

And here's a first go at a Mime (Storm Guardian) done the same way. I'm using the moving, dynamic models as Harlequins in multicolored suits, and the more static models as Mimes in black jumpsuits.

I'm torn between this and the simple black rims....

They are looking good.

I've got to say though, black trims, for me, look the best option so far.

I will watch with interest!

The mixed trim works.

All black is better than all grey though.

Thanks for replies - I think I'm going to go with all black trims for now - I might think about changing the water color to an icky dark green or something - we'll see.

For now, I'm trying to get a few Harlequins up to scratch for inclusion in our current campaign - Eldar vs Imperials. With this in mind, I painted up a bunch more Mimes - in an army using the Harlequin PDF they'll just be regular Harlequins, but in a regular Eldar army they'll count-as Storm Guardians.

I don't know if the oil slicks themselves should be completely black like that. Obviously it would be very difficult to achieve but oil tends to have loads of different colours swimming on its surface. And actual oil is very dark brown rather than black isn't it?
I may be wrong!

Thanks - yeah I'm thinking maybe doing 'disgusting marsh' rather than oil and going for a dark green color, maybe with bits of grass poking out. Basically something that isn't black or grey...!

ANYWAY, stripped some old Death Jesters and regular Harlequins, sprayed and based them today. I think I'll have my Death Jesters white, since the Mimes will be black. White and bone...

And completed a Harlequin with what I'll be using as a Fusion pistol - I have about four of this model so enough for all the squads..

THEN

Later, completed my first death Jester

And a Harlequin with a kiss. I've painted the kiss green for ease of recognition, but I'm thinking of switching it to just white...

I think the green works. It's subtle enough not to overpower the model but clear enough not to get lost, which I think the white might amidst the bone in the armour.

Yup, there were two releases of Jes Goodwin Harlequins in the Rogue Trader days. These are all from that range...

Finished a couple more Death Jesters. These ones have Bright Lances, not that it will matter in my regular Eldar list.
