I've been playing for a year and a half now and I have had the following armies:
Tau, Tyranids(4th ed), DH, SM, Nids(5th ed), and now im sticking with Tau. Keep collecting as long as you're not going broke and you still enjoy the game. It's ok to have more than one army.
I too went through such a phase. Keep all that stuff, you might one day have a use for it, if nothing else, to scavenge for bits. When the Eye of Terror book came out, I made 80 mutants just out of stuff I had hanging around from failed army starts.
Keep everything on hand for when you get bored of another army. I started Guard a year ago, painted 15 guys and stopped. I started them up again in February and I'm loving the army. Lord knows I've got enough armies...
I think it's the nature of the hobby. I've been doing this for only a couple of months now and already i'm planning two or three other armies that i'd like to do.
painted: 12 dryads,9 glade guard,2 glade guard scouts.
assembled but unpainted: 2 glade guard and the lord's bowman, 8 glade guard scouts, sexy elf lord
in the box: , 8 glade riders, , one female spellsinger, Orion, Ariel, the faerie queen. SOB immolator, 15 sisters.
I think this is a very common problem, and one that GW likes to capitalise (spelling??) on. As mentioned above it's the nature of game. I have been an avid fan of nids since I started playing...although I'm always having my attention drawn by other armies. Haven't given in yet but I think when the new necron codex comes out my willpower will fail me.
I think I have had an army at one time or another for every race in 40K and WFB in the past 30 years. As soon as plastic Plague Bearers release (?) I'll be all over Daemons for WFB/40K.

its all good, like was stated previously if you enjoy it keep doing it I also have changed armies multiple times just to keep some flavor in the game.
Heralds of Rot CSM 4000 pts
"In short there is no Order only Chaos eternal so lament and be quelled with fear if you serve the False Emperor or accept the gifts bestowed by the pantheon of the four gods and rejoice as the galaxy burns." - Unknown Wordbearer
But yeah, it just seems more like general restlessness.
Depends on how you prefer to "hobby"
You could use Vassal if you want to play the different armies. If you want to paint, you could get something from the army so you can see if you enjoy painting it.
You've got new gamer fever and GW loves to capitalize on it. They're always showing you the latest cool stuff they're coming out with in WD and telling you about it when you get in their stores.
I used to have the same problem, and I would change armies every couple months. Eventually I realized that I wanted more that 1000 points of any given army and started collecting a single army seriously for a couple systems. That's worked for me.
Though, if you can afford a couple full armies, why not?
Its perfectly normal to collect more than one army; or to switch armies on occasion (OOH Shiny! ). I think in 40K I have had every army that is or was available; but I always return to the IG Now the WarMachine bug has bitten me again and I think I have five armies that I am building and painting
To be honest this is like walking into a crack house and asking if you have a drug problem, now that I think about it.
I will agree with what was stated above; as long as you are not broke and you are enjoying yourself then its OK. Its cheaper than drugs and hookers Please no one correct me on the drugs and hookers, this hobby is draining enough.
Hi, My name is Michael. I have been an addict for 2 years.
I have played Necrons, Grey Knights, Tau, Space Marines, Chaos, and now Nids. I have had over 3000 pts in each army.
That still pales in comparison to a guy in one of our local shops who has switched armies at least a dozen times in that time frame.
You know you're really doing something when you can make strangers hate you over the Internet. - Mauleed
Just remember folks. Panic. Panic all the time. It's the only way to survive, other than just being mindful, of course-but geez, that's so friggin' boring. - Aegis Grimm

I call it gamer ADD. Squirrelsrage hit the nail on the head with the "OOH, shiny!" comment. I've played Orks since I started playing 40K, but I've picked up at least the start of damn near every other army in the meantime. Sometimes you just can't help it.
I remember when I started playing that I wanted a 500-1000 pts force of every army available, but I realized that non of these would be good, so I traded off everything except my space marines, IG and High Elves. Then I slowly started Chaos Space Marines, Beatmen, Empire, Orcs (then traded off), Skaven (also traded off).
Now I'm working on an Araby themed army for WHFB... oh this game.
40k: - Cadian 231st, Death Guard, Sisters, Dark Eldar Iyanden, Scythes of the Emperor
WHFB Armies: High Elves, Empire, WoC, Beastmen, Lizardmen, Dark Elves, Vampires
You have to ask yourself where you derive pleasure from the hobby - ie. are you changing armies because you enjoy the collecting, building, painting aspect or are you changing because you want a competitive force. I have pretty much 3000 pts of every 40k army bar Sob / DH / IG but none of them are what I would call 'finished' largely due to time constraints and my inability to get things done. You certainly aren't alone in that.
I started Orks, then CSM, now back to Orks. Got plans for a Vampire Counts army, even considering playing Warmachine as well.
M: "You are the universe, alpha and omega, the beast with a thousand young, do what thou whilt shall be the whole of the law. NOW GO FORTH AND MUTILATE!!"
"Samus. That's the only name you'll hear. Samus. It means the end and the Death. Samus. I am Samus. Samus is all around you. Samus is the man beside you. Samus will gnaw upon your bones. Look out! Samus is here."
Well I kind of had the same problem, where I would get bored of one army and would start another. Thus what I decided to do was to collect two armies at once. Thus when I got bored of one I would switch the other and when I got bored of that one I would switch back.
My friend has every single codex for the 40k armies and only has a handful of tyranids. He got the Battle of Macragge set and it came without the space marines. That's just god's way of telling you that you shouldn't play the game.
Maybe... I've been sticking with black legion since I started playing about 5 months ago. The only other army that's crossed my mind is ultramarines, which is sort of a side project (I just buy and paint special characters, so far I've got Tigurius and the honour guard, plus a tactical squad and a dready).
I have plenty of other armies that I collect (tau, tyranids, orks, witch hunters) just for painting and modelling. I'm not sure that counts as playing an army though.
