Hard nosed about everything. I’ve yet to see that many treads end nicely. They usually end up being locked for the kind of trash that we would not say to each others faces. Is it me or does this forum live up to its name of “bang bang“. Shoot first then drag the body off later. It just seems compared to other sites such as warseer. That its very cut throat here. Now don’t get me wrong I know that there are jerks everywhere. It just seems that the way people are treated here amounts to a pissing contest or a beat down of others opinions. Now I have had some good times here on Dakka. I’ve even made some money and off loaded extra minis in trades. Yet I find it every harder to come back. In fact if it was not for the New friends treads link I might not be drawn back at all.

So rant over how do others feel about this?
I’m I wrong, misguided, a hopeless foul.

I don't get what you mean. In the off topic there are alot of very flammable topics about religion and politics which seem to end in locks but the vast majority of threads don't get locked and are usually friendly.

Out of the forums I've been on, I think Dakka has had the best moderating. Some forums are just really bad, so It can really get alot worse.

What do you mean by 'best you've ever had'? Do you mean in terms of the forums I've used?

This is the first one I've used, and I must say it's been good enough that I don't use any others. It is harsh, but that's basically because it isn't the type of human interaction where you meet face-to-face and have a bit of a chat. The people you meet on here are basically just words on a page - opinions, thoughts and views. THOSE are what people are arguing with when they do so. Try not to take it personally.

Rampant mongolism, reinforced by inconsistent moderation (eg people can be suspended for creating amusing threads like this one http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/295597.page, but not for being absolute cretins).

Adequate moderation is probably a hard balance, after all it requires a certain measure of subjective judgement, and I fear it's almost impossible to achieve. How can the moderators hope to form an effective filter if some are themselves po-faced dunces and/or boorish imbeciles? I think this is the crux.

I really think it's all a matter of what you get yourself into. You will have a very pleasant experience as long as you don't drag yourself into a discussion that may make you feel uncomfortable.

Personally, I blame Texas. Then again I blame Texas for most everything, even that funny smell Sunblock has. So I'm not really unbiased.

Internet anonymity facilitates rudeness and abrasive behaviour. It also warps sarcasm, dry wit etc since those things are measured with body language and tone/inference in ordinary conversation.

The moderation on dakka grants a far longer leash than many of it's near neighbours, this allows more freedom for people to express themselves and within that, more freedom for people to express themselves negatively.

Dakka has the reputation via the YMDC, army lists etc and it's heavy tourney player presence to be more abrasive. For the most part, it's a better system. Many here will tell you they've been kicked from the other sites over what they considered trivial misdemeanours.

I strongly disagree that the distanced approach works in the sites favor. I've been on quite a few forums and the level of childish tantrum throwing and spam on this site certainly rivals the worst I've seen. The mods absolutely refuse to ban people for flagrant and repeated misdemeanors, only using their powers to really police the more hardcore hobby based forums (it took how long to ban stelek? While green bow fly is still around?). This site has a reputation as whiny and childish, and it's not really undeserved.

Thus i have seek mod for help before , i even mention to him that there are numerous people asking why are the trolls still around when
my retorting action landed me a temp ban. The mod blatantly replied that he refuse to believe such people existed.
By then i was furious to be called a liar which then the mod told me " why dont they just PM me instead? are they such nancy? "

Personally I like the easy going atmosphere that Dakka has created, it makes the forum seem more goofy and wild, something I found lacking from warseer.

Troll either are , or are not. One does not unintentionally troll because that defeats the whole purpose of trolls.

I get reported because of my fierce stance against trolls , im a white blood cell , and the troll = disease.

I love Dakka. The mods respond when you report something, and are pretty proactive when it actually matters. I like the leniency, since it allows for more organic conversation. If I have a real problem with someone I'll put them on ignore. Don't change a thing!

That said I have noticed that the hammer (mods) falls as it wants. Not due to content most of the time.
I have received strong warnings before about this or that. When posters in the same tread are not even dealt with. They repeatedly get by. When I myself must watch what I say and make sure its not offensive to anyone or my treads are locked and “you watch yourself sonny” is handed out with a black mark to boot.

It does seem as that Dakka needs a mod for the mods?

Err.... There are Admins, two of 'em.

And I remember when a thread like this was posted before and a Mod said that most warnings are handed out by Private Messages, so you don't see people get warned.

How the hell do you even know that? Mods don't publish the list of warning PMs sent to users, nor the suspensions that follow.

Dakka is the only forum I post on a regular basis,and for the most part I enjoy the experince.
Even when people disagree,it's interesting to see peoples points of view concerning various "hot button" topics

Its simply. All you have to do is keep track of who said what and track their post. Its easy to see that I have been beaten over the head for some of the same comments posted by others. While the others keep posting what they feel like and they are still allowed to post.

Well having a higher post count and a good reputation does sometimes allow you to get away with things.

You were issued these warnings In PMs I assume, so people don't know if you have been warned or not. You don't know whether people have been warned or not if it's done through PM's. End of story.

It's just like if you're a student with good grades and no history of being in trouble, then get into a fight. You're going to be looked at with a bit of leniency since it's out of character.

I like it. i think people are more real here then i know in real life.

I am sure im going to get flammed for this, but for the most part im going to have to agree with Shuma and his points on this one.

And Luna, I have to say...

You saying that you are the anti troll while you defend he who shall not be named blindly makes you, in this case, a blatent hypocrite.

That being said, I do understand the position the mods are in. And I do know that some mods are trying to do more to solve this problem, but are haveing their hands tied so to speak by others behind closed doors thus limiting what they can do.

I myself feel that a firmer hand against self proclaimed and blatent trolls of any order is in order on this site.
