Dakka be good. I have been on a fair amount of forums for various video games, mostly because I was still in high school and didn't have very many responsibilites, and I must say, the only forum that has EVER been as fun was the Gears of War one, before all the trolls, little kids, and elitists showed up. There were like twenty of us on there, and the mods were kind of lenient. We would debate, we set up a tourney or two, we would disagree, standard forum stuff. Then all sorts of new people came, the mods got stricter, and people just started getting banned. Hell, I got banned for saying they released an unfinished product in #2.
DakkaDakka (which also has the most fun name to say on the internetz) is an awesome forum, I like it here. The mods are lenient, the also actually have personalities. I know I can say something and not have to worry about getting cited for it, unless it is truely outrageous.

Spoken like someone who easily forgets it was many posters that made this site what it is and have stuck through lots of crap and neglect to make sure it was maintained even if they weren't a mod or DCM.
I let my DCM lapse because of quality of moderation (or lack thereof) and have never renewed since the transfer of ownership. The quality of which hasn't changed very much since those by gone days.
In times of neglect a select few made vigilante attempts at keeping the place sane. But I wouldn't expect a brown-nosing yes-man to understand that, even if he were part of that before he even became a mod with a far too exalted sense of purpose while treating dakka as his own toilet.
You're opinion is duly noted and has been duly discarded with a flush.

Your unwarranted anger and vitrol indicate that your statements are emotionally driven and therefore lack credibility.
Your casual dismissal of others experience compounds your lack of credibility.
Your continued participation on these forums, when combined with your post, indicate a certain level of hipocracy that allows this one to logically dismiss your post in its entirety.

If what you see on Dakka is regularly upsetting you then go elsewhere.
This is an internet forum about toy soldiers, which contains an off topic forum which is liberaly moderated to encourage discussion and debate of all sorts of issues, by people with vastly differing veiws. No one is forced to read what is posted here, they certainly aren't forced to post. By all means add your input but don't expect anyone to agree, because otherwise, it may hurt your feelings.
I have reported things if I feel they have over stepped the mark but I don't get upset if nothing happens as it really doesn't have a big effect on my life. It shouldn't on any elses either.
One of the best things about Dakka is that it doesn't have the Draconian moderation of other similar forums, whilst this can cause some posters to come to blows verbaly, it also creates an environment where people can speak their minds and discuss pretty much anything without being treated like a child. This is why I think the mods are doing a good job here.
There will always be those who are looking to get a reaction or cause an argument. The best thing you can do is ignore them and walk away. I find this works in the real world too

Errr.....did you just call Waaagh_Gonads a brown-noser and a yes-man, or did I misread that?
Either way, I'm pretty sure that you just misread what he said anyway. He wasn't saying that only DCM's and mods have an opinion worth listening to or are the only people who contribute to the wealth and variety that is Dakka. What he said was the only people who have a 'right' to complain about it are those who've put in the time and money to keep the website going. Kind of like how someone who actually bought an Ipod has the right to complain about it's technical flaws/warranty/apple as a company, as opposed to someone who doesn't even own one complaining.
I'd also like to say that you don't truly appreciate just how much work goes into keeping this place running smoothly, until you can see the full 'behind the scenes' picture. Every time I've seen someone appointed to the mod team(including the chaps appointed with me, 5 now), they're always amazed at the amount of discussion and data collected, and the extent to how closely the mod team follows things on the forum.

You're welcome for making suggestions to help make the place better. Though notice I have no criticism of how the forumware functions. You're a dead brilliant beast in that regard, Jim.

You could be right, but then again it takes more to contribute to dakka than merely money. Its the quality of the posters contributions that draw in the all important user numbers. There are many ways to contribute to a community, and those who do make worthwhile contributions should also have a right to have their say not only heard, but respected. To be told that only certain types of contribution warrant a 'right' to gripe is frankly insulting. Without worthwhile contributions, Dakka would be a ghost town. To ensure the contributions are worthwhile requires attentive moderation. A thankless job, surely, but thats not something people are ignorant to when they take the responsibility.

Stercus tauri. Magister Mundi sum!
Sometimes things need to get shaken up a bit for people (myself included) to get a sense of reality occasionally.
I say what I say because as you mods already are well aware I am taking you all on to task. Threads get locked when a simple "Hey knock it off! OT posts are being deleted so the discussion can continue" could be just as well handled with the same amount of effort. Warnings could be given instead of ignoring egregious trolling. Mods being deliberately belligerent and thus no better than trolls themselves on occasion, etc. etc. etc. ad nausaeum.
It nurtures a lack of respect from the community towards the administration. That communication you speak of works both ways.
Though if you view my antagonizing challenges as something that should not be present on dakka, then you know how to ban me. As already noted long ago I have no compunction if this should be or not be and have invited such with open arms in the past.
I see it as two separate ideologies struggling with how each views how things should operate. I simply disagree with Gonads assertion and voiced it with pejorative disdain.

DAKKA also let me carry on the Deff Rolla petition and post links on this site for the petition. I was banned from about 4 other forums and even dished out a perma ban on another for just trying to get the petition on there. I never thought I would meet so much resistance for trying to improve our hobby.
And not to sound like a brown noser, but I think the mods do a fairly good job on patrolling the problems on here. Ive seen alot of posts edited from not being polite, and threads locked, heard of people getting the can too. But Im also glad they arnt nazis, it allows for some nice conversation/debates.

Dakka mods are fair and usually goes the extra mile to personally get to the bottom of cases.
Upon reading my post i see i was been vague and some people took the opportunity to claim me bad mouthing dakka mods.
No that is not the case. Like i said earlier , leniency can be both a good and bad thing , its bad when the abusers dance around the rules and leniency,
hence the ones to blame are the abusers.

sebster:
So who wants to draw up a list of "best practices" or rules about how to follow the Dakka rules?
I'm a strong advocate of stifling people on Dakka Dakka. I can read entire threads solely from people in my Ignore list. I still read them, however, as it's more of the principle of the thing. Practically speaking the only thing you do by ignoring the people on your Ignore list is exempting yourself from the discussion.
The problem is not whether there should be more or less draconian measures taken in controlling the posters, but in controlling content. It's no mistake that the best forums on Dakka Dakka are those where there is the least debate, and more communal effort by posters to add constructive criticism and comments.
Many people, it seem, have no problems with constructive criticism when it's to do with painting or battle reports. It's really hard for posters like H.B.M.C to thread-gak about how Jervis Johnson touched him in a bad place when the topic is painting. Likewise it's hard for people to play the "Starship Enterprise vs Death Star" game when the rules are played out in the context of a public game.
Without economic access to active moderation, Dakka Dakka relies on passive moderation like that of a teacher in a play-ground, whereby a poster uses moderation not to resolve a dispute, but as a weapon to suppress another poster and their voice. I know because I prosecuted such a campaign against another poster; whether this campaign was ultimately successful or futile, the poster is now banned after I had constantly followed and complained about his behaviour. For a while it seemed as though I had my own obnoxious dingle-berry clinging to the threads I posted in.
But if someone is to be banned, it should be because of the content they contribute (or don't) to the site as well as their attitude or beliefs, because the tone and quality of their posts reflects on Dakka Dakka. Someone who is constantly rude and even believes that rudeness is required to speak truth reflects badly on Dakka Dakka because the truth of the matter is that the truth is neither polite nor rude however politely or rudely presented.
There are people that claim that text cannot convey tone, as if the evidence of there being novels and rhetorical works was insufficient. Beyond spelling and grammar people need to develop a style that accurately and easily conveys tone. But tone has to match other content, such as by contrast in the case of irony, or exaggeration in the case of satire, or the salience in the case of worthwhile advice.
When someone posts something thoroughly idiotic, off-topic, incoherent, poorly-spelled, half-baked, irrelvant, or worthless you should be able to call it and to defend the merits of such a claim. I personally prefer to both be called on my mistakes when the person doing the calling has found an error in my reasoning, and is willing to take the time and have the patience to help me figure out why they're right, as I would be patient with them. Posters concerned with self-aggrandizement, or simply quarreling, or politically motivated to defend or attack a particular position or opinion or just plain trolling are the reasons why this forum falls short of its potential.

You don't have to refer to yourself as a 'brown-noser', just to compliment the staff.
Dakka is great, I avoid the forums that bore or annoy me, and I ignore the posts that do the same. I like Dakka for the people on it, and the awesome format. It really isn't for me to say what the mods should be doing, because I don't have access to all the information they do, nor do I have a particularly good reason to psuedo-moderate the site for my own satisfaction.
It's a bit abrasive, but I have never seen such thoroughly discussed subjects, as I find on Dakka. I like that people disagree, that is very healthy. I also like that there are very intelligent posters to engage in different topics, and through that I can actually learn something of substance. Out of the thousands upon thousands of threads, I think it a bit unfair to consider the majority to be lacking in civility. Most often people are quite friendly, and that can easily extend into a heated debate; there is not automatic reason that discussions need to be intense, but I consider those that are, to be some of the best reads.
It is fairly easy to ignore the bits that annoy me, and I accomplish that without need of the ignore button.
Anyway... this is the internet, and this is a wargaming site.

I've been here over 10 years and dakka has had its ups and downs.
I am sensing a few boos from the peanut gallery.
