I have to admit I like dakka far better then Warseer, god only knows how many warnings Ive had over the years over there, plus for some pretty stupid things. I chat more on our local forums but delve into dakka the most after those.

There's probably about 30 warnings sent out each day here at the moment, but the vast, vast majority are PMs.

We cant be everything to everyone and we dont try to be. First and foremost it has to be somewhere yakface and I enjoy visiting. Then the mods who have to deal with users, then the rest of the dakka mod team, then the DCMs, then the registered users and finally non-registered visitors.

Those are the priorities for enjoyment but modding is pretty even and fair handed. Mods have had warnings from admins. DCMs and users have had warnings and bans from mods.

If you dont like a discussion, click the ignore button on users who annoy you and things will be filtered automatically for you. If you like things people say, use the friend button and you can view any threads they start, giving you a nice filtered view.

Different areas of dakka have different levels of friendliness. If somewhere is too caustic for you, read a different part of the site, or find a specialist forum dealing with that topic. There are plenty of other offtopic, video games, etc forums out there that do a better job than us for those topics.

We all have our favourite parts of the site and areas that we dont like so much. The site is generally designed to let you tune your experience around the areas that you feel happiest in.

From what other people say in my FLGS and on other wargaming forms that Dakka Dakka's Off-Topic forms are really brutal so I usually stay on painting & modeling topics

Are they that brutal?

Killkrazy and Frazzled seem to keep a pretty tight lid on the ourageous stuff. At least they're the ones that I notice on OT. I think some people are just a bit too sensitive. I happen to enjoy people speaking plainly.

To be fair , i read YMDC because as you know i dont want to give my cousin a headache when i play against him , so i try to learn the proper rules
when the rule books also confuses me.

Thus i read the threads Gwar! responds to.
I defend him because its always the same pattern , i see him proving his case , or atleast a stalemate at page 1.
Then same thing gets dragged on for 10+ pages back and forth each time with the other side instigating him bit by bit.

By the end of 10+ pages ( not to mention different threads ) I cannot possibly blame Gwar! for losing his patience.
I dare you to point out anyone that can reply as much as him without losing their cool.

I respect him for what he do , i dont personally know him or have need to defend him in that sense.

I think Op hasn't been to many forums before.

Most 40k forums are quite polite, but most regular forums I have frequented are much more nasty then here.

Also the lower amount of moderation is better.

Also no cupcake option.. SadFace..

Finally I use the ignore button quite a bit.. It's probably my favorite feature. hahaha.


EDIT Also with a forum like this you are more likely to get constructive crit then just backslap posts, for painting or whatever.

I use the off-topic forum the most and I have never felt insulted before. So I have no clue what people are talking about Dakka's off-topic being brutal, I find it a fun and sometimes out of control (which I personally find entertaining)

I find the comments about "innadequate moderation" amusingly ironic. This is because many of those making such comments would most likely to be the first on the receiving end of a ban if things were tighter around here.

Dakka is the best forum I have ever been on, simple as that.

Yakface's goal with Dakka is to make an environment that you wouldn't mind letting your kid read every so often.

People posting softcore porn, calling each other witches, etc doesn't really fit that goal.

The funny thing is, everyone I have talked to on skype while playing on Vassal from Dakka has said "Wow, you're nothing like I thought you would be."

Like I said, I don't really have a problem with Gwar's posting style personally. I am impossible to offend, particularly by anonymous message board posters. My issue with some of the things that I have read with my own eyes that might be considered and condescending and generally "not nice" is that they are directed at people that are just looking for some rules advice or clarification and are instead treated to belittlement.

I haven’t really found my dakka experience negatively impacted by trolls or abuse, the mods do an excellent job in keeping that stuff under control. If anything, I think the mods are a little quick to close threads, but I understand that’s my personal opinion and they’re the ones doing the hard yards, so it gets to be their opinion that stands.

That said, Dakka certainly deserves its reputation as churlish place, where real debate is scarce. But that’s a cultural thing that can’t be moderated into a forum, it’s something the members have to take on for themselves. It will change when the members stop accepting and contributing to poor debate.

I think from now on i am just going to press the 'ignore' button a lot more:

Its really just a few MODS that hunt down those they do not like and make sure to have reason to ban said person. Such as myself.
I think Dakka would be much better off if the great MODS could do their jobs. Its just that they have their hands tied with cleaning up the messes of The racist MODS.
