Sci-fi comedy Red Dwarf will return for two new series, it has been confirmed.

While standing in for Janice Long on BBC Radio 2, Craig Charles revealed that he will return as lead character David Lister.

He said: "I can now announce we are going to be doing two more series of it starting in January next year... I got the call today. They said 'Craig, can you do it?', I said 'I'll sort it out'. So I will be able to do it in January."

Meanwhile, Chris Barrie, who plays Arnold Rimmer, told the Coventry Telegraph: "There are plans afoot to have a tenth series.

"I find it very hard to call it a tenth series, because that obviously means we're calling the Easter special from last year the ninth series. But yes, certainly, I would say some more new Red Dwarf product. There are plans afoot to get that into gear."

He added: "I think of 'Back To Earth' as a sort of 21-year celebration, really, as a proper three-part special. But yes, it would be nice to do, and hopefully we will, another six half hours.

"I don't really know anything more than I'm saying, believe me. I do know plans are afoot, but that's all I can say. In terms of the direction of the show, I don't really want to see it change that much. I just want more strong storylines, probably in a half-hour format."

err...well....it might be good eh ?

Can't help but think that certain things should just be left alone after a while.

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all
We love our superheroes because they refuse to give up on us. We can analyze them out of existence, kill them, ban them, mock them, and still they return, patiently reminding us of who we are and what we wish we could be.

Hmm, I am a little torn. I seem to remember a special they did for the TV channel Dave (is this the Easter special referred to in the cutting?) and I didn't think much of it to be honest. However, with decent writing and a decent budget to take advantage of new special FX techniques, then it could be good. Hopefully we will see another Blackadder series too, one day!

Yeah, that's the one.

I can't help but think that better SFX actually spoilt the show, it lost part of its charm.

I saw part of the pilot for the septic version... hmm.. well..... yeah...

It's a fine line I suppose, to tread between SFX and story - especially when plot gets sacrificed for the sake of whizzy computer stuff. If the two can be married then it can work well; I wouldn't want to back to early Red Dwarf when the SFX looked really ropey.

I'm still trying to decide if I think it's a good idea or not! The Easter Special they did wasn't as good as it could have been.

The special was a bit of a let down for me.

Love the first 6 series. 7&8 were OK and had their moments.

Just hope they keep the show on the Red Dwarf and return to the slightly older format of life aboard ship lost in the depths of space.

Lets not let nostalgia cloud the issue. All the new ones were spank. They should have stopped flogging this donkey years ago.

We are arming Syrian rebels who support ISIS, who is fighting Iran, who is fighting Iraq who we also support against ISIS, while fighting Kurds who we support while they are fighting Syrian rebels.

I watched the original 8 series recently, and I was...underwhelmed. I doubt I'll bother with the new ones.

I watched the first two of the Special, I wasn't really impressed.

Is Series 7&8 when they're on the small green ship?
(I don't think I need spoiler tags for something that is over fifteen years old.)

7&8 is where they are in prison after finding Red Dwarf again.

I used to love Red Dwarf.

It all went down hill when they went bananas with computer based special effects... whilst ambitious they looked obviously fake. Something that never occured with the model work of the first 4 or so series.

I haven't even seen the 9th or 10th series.

Hmm...
I kinda lost faith in this show after the new stuff that came out last year, it seemed like they were trying to make way too many things happen at once.
You gotta admit this show is genius though. I've seen all the episodes at least 5x each because they are so good.
Let's hope this is good too. I'm in the mood for some good TV.

The 7th and 8th series had their charms, even though the special effects were different, but the series from last year was a joke, and I doubt that these new series will be any better. I'll give it a try but I'm not expecting anything brilliant. The show has run it's ground, leave it as it was rather than trying to drain even more out of it.

It all went wrong when they introduced Kochanski. Weak character, weak actress, weak plots. Keep it where it's meant to be, the Working Class in space.

I rather fear Hyperdrive has taken it's pedestal though.

The Kochanski era was the kiss of death for Red Dwarf.

Still, Friday nights have never been eth same since RD disappeared from our screens.

The last episode I saw was with Rimmer kicking Death in the nads. I was always curious what happened after that.

Poor Listy the Treadhead, just as people were going to forget...

I watched season 1 on Netflix found it chuckleworthy, but never bothered to hunt down the rest.

Now when will they remake Blake's Seven? I got into it somewhere around season 3 or 4 when there were only 5 of them and none of them were named Blake!
