Well, inspite of the 2 year threadomancy:

1.) Current fluff says that Tau don't have Titans but are quite successfull with mobile flyers shooting those Titans down.
2.) Same fluff says that Tau develop fast, adapt their strategies and are still working on how to deal with Titans. So there is potential for Titans in a universe where Titans make sense strategically.
3.) I use many Gundam or similar merchandise for my Tau, here a 1/60 Perfect Scale Gundam (not my model on the photo), which I will use "counting as" an Eldar Titan in Apocalypse games, already prepainted for my Sa'cea army

Here another Gundam that I use counting as an Eldar Scorpion tank:

As they're very mobile-minded, I think a Titan is just too slow... a large skimmer is much more fitting.

Human Titans yes, but not Eldar Titans (or Gundams ).

Gundams don't have the same design as Tau, this is more fitting.

The reason why Titans are in 40K is because in the mid 1980s, Battletech was very popular, and GW decided they needed a walking robot tank game.

Titans don't make any kind of realistic sense.

However, anything can be made to work in game by ignoring physics and writing the proper rules.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

I could see the Tau answer to titans being something more akin to the 'toads' from battletech, a specialist crisis suit squad with anti super heavy vehicle armaments. Or an aerial based squadron with numerous highly mobile railguns.

We know it's the latter because they are in the fluff.

Chainsaw everythings, magical space elfs, magical space mushroom orks, rocket machine guns, magical space locusts, and eight foot tall magical space monks who drool acid don't make any kind of realistic sense either.

I think it's safe to say making sense comes second to aesthetics/deliberately not making sense when it comes to 40k.

i would agree on what has been said so far something gundamy with some conversion work it would look very tau like.
maybe an accompanying tau titan pilot for it. basically just a very big battle suit.

something like this would be a good scout titan with good conversion work of course.

But a Tau Titan would be pretty cool. You could make it out of a Gundam kit.

Perhaps they've just agreed on, that not every army needs 'em.

Larger gun-ships is a little more original, IMHO!

I'd much rather see a HUGE gunship fielded, with a ridiculous amount of STFU-guns, and OMG-missiles, than another huge walker!
(not saying walker-titans ain't cool!)

That's the Manta. Only they should do a completely gunship version.

So... because they addapt quickly, could tau potentaly use titans if they were fighting an extended campain on multiple hive worlds, where flyers are impraticle because of all the spires?

or that style of situation?

Mantas can hover using their advanced anti-grav and are likely not much less maneuvorable than Titans in such terrain.

Personally, I don't think that a Tau titan the size of other titans would be very Tau like. It just doesn't fit either of their fighting styles. On that note though, something slightly like that Metal Gear Rex styled mech on the first page would be fitting.

Actually, the ones at the top of this page would be very fitting.

Mantas are basically army transporters who can also defend themselves. Too valuable to hunt Titans though.

happypants wrote:Ok, so there is NO fluff about the Tau having titans, but it would kind of be a logical progression thing in my mind.

Anyone have a good reason that I should or should not make one?

I had one custom built for me, I'll see if I can dig out the pics.
It was basically a giant Crisis suit.
The coolest part was, the chest opened up, and it was piloted by a crisis suit.
I then modified the crisis suit, so the chest could open up, and inside was a tau pilot.
I just ran it as a warhound, as it was built to that scale. Then I added the cost of the HQ in the crisis suit, and 2 ejection seats (one ejects the crisis from the titan, the 2nd ejects the pilot from the crisis suit).
It's got weapons that swap out as well, 2 missile pods, 2 rail guns and a burst cannon. It can build with twin-rail/burst, burst w/rail and missile, or 2x Rail/missile.
While I don't see tau doing a titan crewed by multiple guys, I could see a larger version of a battle suit. And besides, Large platform with rail gun is BORING.
