yeah,
From what i understood GeneStealers hybrids are introduced to the populartion by gene infection of some direct kind to unborn mammals in the womb... the offspring then have some kind of mind control over their parents to protect them and create cults...
Genestealers often target families in postions of power and control...
If the cult gets large enough it can mind control the whole planet, so that when the fleet arrives the population are reduced to mindless zombies under control of the hive mind... and they just walk onto the hive ships and are consumed...
Orks don't have direct offspring. they have spores that drift in the wind and grow into Orks. so the cults will never get establised...
I think...
But the similarities between 'nids and AlIens is obvious... even some of variations of 'nids match some of the variations of Aliens
you have
Alien - GeneStealer
chestBurster - rippers
dogAlien - guants
alienQueen - Hive-tyrant
Panic...
Edit: and Aliens was created by giger... check out his website it's the dogsbollox http://www.hrgiger.com
you can buy his actual sculpts there... if your rich...
he also has two Bars (he had more but they went bust or something) themed in his own twisted style...
I'd love to have a few drinks here i can tell you that for nothing... probabily rammed with cyber-goths though....

Its actually stated that Orks are quite resistant. Within four generations, instead of producing pure genestealers, you get pure orks again. Of course this was pre-spore thingy...

Frazzled, do you remember where you read that? I vaguely recall something along the same lines now that you mention it... probably 2nd ed fluff from either the Nid's or Ork's Codex?

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money
"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

For the love of all things Orky, don't combine Nids and orks...
And about your 'mate' does he play and Blizzard Games? They are all essentially ripped off from Warhammer and 40k...

Civilized humans have been around for what... 10,000 plus years, depending on what you classify as civilized. I'm willing to bet there are very few ideas that haven't been thought of previously, in one form or another, anymore.
Everything draws influence from something else. You aren't just born and suddenly have completely original and new ideas. Your ideas are drawn from your imagination, which is influenced by your life's experiences.
Looking down on GW because they may have drawn inspiration from Giger, or the Alien series, or anything else, is just idiotic. Should we then all just ridicule all modern fantasy and sci-fi authors, as you can take almost anything written today and say "Gee, this idea came from John Q. Author."
I think the world would be a much better place if half of you would quit whining and being elitist bastards and just enjoyed the models and the game.

well this thread is getting crazy. GET PICS ALREADY! lol
anywho i just wanted to say, the Ork race is supposedly super old. older then man, around before the Eldar. Id imagine that somewhere along their super long histroy, the nids and Orks have come into contact and some Orks have already been part of the gene pool for some really ridiculously long time.
good luck on the conversions!!!!

IIRC correctly, -way- back they said that once upon a time, the nids had captured a bunch of orks, and by the time the other orks had rescued them, they'd been devolved into squigs (And were the origin of all the squigs that the orks used)

Kilkrazy wrote:The original Tyranids in 40K were the Genestealers who were 90% ripped off from the Aliens movies. For example, the ideas of aliens melding their DNA with other species were hinted at in Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection.
Actually, Genestealers were anything BUT the "original Tyranids in 40k." Tyranids were around in 1987 in the Rogue Trader 40k book. They used the same Flak Armor and Lasguns that everyone else did. They also had Zoats. If you look at the illustrations of these original Tyranids, you can see that they are not very far off from what we know today. Genestealers were only the first Tyranid models and the first 'playable' Tyranids.
"Alien" was released in 1979. "Aliens" (alien 2) was released in 1987. Both of these certainly could have contributed to the inspiration of the early Genestealer models found in Space Hulk (1990), as well as the Tyranid Warrior models from "Tyranid Attack" (aka Space Crusade) which was released in 1992.
Aliens 3 was released in 1992, with "Alien: Resurrection" not coming along until 1997. Well after GW's Tyranids entered into the 40k fray. I think its safe to say that the latter two movies had nothing at all to do with shaping GW's Tyranids. If anything, these two movies might have "borrowed" some of GW's creative license to beef up their movie baddies.
90% is a bit exaggerated, in my opinion. Ok. A lot exaggerated.
Kilkrazy wrote:The expansion of the Tyranid range into a full-blown army came later and may well have been helped along by the Starship Troopers movie.
This is considerably inaccurate. The Tyranids got their own codex in 40k 2nd Edition. That came out in 1993. The Starship Toopers movie didn't come out until 1997.

Guys this is a very interesting discussion but i have two points.
There are already Ork hybrids in the tyranid arsenal,
Biovores 'according to 3rd ed codex'
also the idea that tyrandids like took massive ideas form aliens is obvious btu people shoudl also remember starship troopers was published in 1959 so even before the film and adaptation and the aliens films the idea behind the mad bug/arcachnid stuff was still about

The Imperium of Man is able to traverse the Warp with difficulty when their Emperor concentrates from his golden life support machine and lights the way. Unfortunately, because the Emperor has the attention span of the average 5-year-old Pokemon fanboy, this means that many an unfortunate Imperial ship has had the WTF WHERE'D THE LIGHTS GO experience, which in the Warp is invariably fatal. |

One of the things I like the most about the 40k universe, is how it allows the player to bring anything to the table.
ALL genres/ideas/memes to do with sci-fi/history/fantasy/military can be fitted in to your army or models or background with a bit of imagination, allowing it to be a truly postmodern hobby. Is it ripping things off? Does that make it bad?
Yeah, that's right, I'm trying to be intellectual ...
...while I discuss my hobby of painting plastic men, (and doing their voices when they fight - " for the emperor, hurr! ")

Get some pictures already
But on a different note. WHO CARES, if ideas were taken from something else. Human Culture rips of itself. Almost all Mythology was ripped from a different culture... Hercules for example (A thing we call "Arch-characters"), you cant just hate everything that has a super powerfull hero in it, cause it was done before. Everything rips off of something, its a thing we call INSPIRATION. For example...
Dungeons and Dragons (Yes I do play it, Yes I am a nerd), ripped the "Fantasy Genre" from Tolkien (Author of the Lord of the Rings), whom of which created the Fantasy Genre we know today. But you cant hate it for that reason.
Just my Opinion.

And LoTR is derivitive in and of itself. JRRT ripped off all the northern european folk tales to get his inspiration.
Hercules is a retelling of Heracles.
Copy, "homage" and ripoff are all part of human storytelling. There are only 7 original storylines.
Get over it.

At least from what I gathered from the book nerds I worked with at B&N(one was a former college professor who had quit to work at B&N, seriously, some of them were just sad).

Wtf
Starship Troopers Released was released in 1959 originally called "Starship Soldier", so if anything GW ripped off an 30 year old work of political Sci-Fi
