Subject: Day the Earth Stood Still-Anyone hear how good it is
Ahtman wrote:Well the original film had very strong allusions to Christ. Enough that it was forced to change a story element to keep from possibly offending people. So it's not a surprise that there is some biblical elements to it.
Really? I never got that from the movie, though I also haven't seen it since I was 12. So that's almost certainly got something to do with it.
Klaatu brings a message of peace to the word.
Klaatu gives a climactic statement of his mission, and then lifts off into space in his ship; Jesus gave a final address to his disciples before ascending into heaven.
Klaatu is revived from the dead for a short time by the robotic Gort. Originally it wasn't temporary but a full on resurrection. The MPAA had it changed to 'temporarily revived' to keep Klaatu from seeming to powerful and they also had to add in the line about bringing the dead back was "reserved to the Almighty Spirit".

Th trailer implies that if humans die, earth survives, but if we live we and the earth die.
I hope it isn't the pseudoenviro tree humping rubbish environmentalist message.

FITZZ wrote After watching the IMO horrible remake of War
of the worlds a few years back,I am dreading seeing how Day the earth stood still is handled.
I know that in the cases of both films the remakes have much better FX,unfourtunatly thats all they had.
I can only pray that if World War Z is made into a film neither Tom Cruise nor Keanu Reeves will make an apperance.....unless they are bieng eaten.
Thanks Anung, I'm really looking forward to seeing how World War Z comes out.
Oh,as for the early reports from various trusted friends concerning "Day the earth stood still"....."Save your money,it's a boring, jumbled,CGI driven mess"....WWHHOOAA..most unexcelent.

The way I understand it that is sorta there but at the same time part of the problem is that it never actually explains clearly why it matters enough to kill humanity off. We know that they want to save the planet, but it is vague as to why. In the original it was pretty clear: we discovered nuclear weapons (probably to soon) and were becoming dangerous to the other inhabitants of space. They were afraid of being nuked, ect ect.

I think the implication is that habitable world are extremely rare, and are treated as a kind of public resource amongst the galactic community. Though that still seems odd, as any race capable of turning off the entire power grid would surely have the capacity to terraform a planet.
Life does not cease to be funny when people die any more than it ceases to be serious when people laugh.

a) Straczynski is doing WWZ, if Babylon 5 is anything to go by it will be awesome,
b) why do people have a problem with Reeves, i actually enjoy most of the films he is in, Devils Advocate is one of my all time favorite movies and hes pretty awesome in it, or is it just the fact that he is like Stalloine and has only one facial expression>?

a) Absolutely,WWZ should be fantastic.
b) It's not that I hate Reeves, and yes Devils Advocate was a pretty good movie (thank you Mr. Pachino), it's his "sameness",like no matter what movie he's in,it's almost the same Keainu, just having diffrent stuff hapen to him.
I wouldnt go as far as comparing him to Stallone (except for the wooden expression), as he lacks Stallones "over the topness" (sorry).
Just can't imagine..Whhhoooaa! I AM THE MOST EXCELENT LAW!!!!!

true, i could argue the point that in some respects that helps grab a movie audience because they have a point of reference as they know the main character already, but i was just curious as to why people dislike him so much, sure he's no Pacino or DeNiro but lets face it there are a hell of load of poorer actors out there (to take an example the guy they have to play Goku in the upcoming DBZ movie, or the guy that played Superman in Superman Returns)
also Khor'Ghurneth: Last Samurai is the only good movie with Tom Cruise in it period, that man is terrible

Top Gun, Minority Report, Mission: Impossible, Interview with a Vampire. He's done some good stuff. Hell, I never heard anyone say a word against him before his scientology days. And then suddenly everyone changed their tunes to "He's a terrible actor, I never liked him, he's short and ugly, They say he eats childrens spines to stay young..."
Ok, the last ones new, but just you wait...

Tom Cruise is a talented actor and excellent leading man. He's also nuttier than a fruitcake, but that doesn't diminish his talent. Roman Polanski almost definitely raped an underage girl, but he's a fantastically talented director.
Keanu Reeves is a good looking action lead. By all reports he's a really nice guy and dedicated to every role he takes. He turns up early every morning, knows his lines and never pulls tricks with his star power. But he isn't much of an actor. Fortunately he picks roles where that doesn't matter too much.
“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

I think the question should be restated. How good is this movie after someone's had three rum and cokes?
-"Wait a minute.....who is that Frazz is talking to in the gallery? Hmmm something is going on here.....Oh.... it seems there is some dispute over video taping of some sort......Frazz is really upset now..........wait a minute......whats he go there.......is it? Can it be?....Frazz has just unleashed his hidden weiner dog from his mini bag, while quoting shakespeares "Let slip the dogs the war!!" GG
-"Don't mind Frazzled. He's just Dakka's crazy old dude locked in the attic. He's harmless. Mostly."

The Horse Whisperer. Years ago, it's on TV and I figured, well, it's a Redford film...has to have some quality there, right?
I watch maybe 45 minutes to a hour of it, and I'm bored beyond belief. I don't mind a slower film, but *nothing* is happening. So I leave to run an errand or two. I come back and the movie is *still* on. What's worse...I picked up the story immediately, because *nothing* happened while I was gone! True story.
Three rum and cokes aren't even remotely enough to save that movie. You'd have to go to controlled substances at the very least.
Oh my eyes! Big spoiler if you still want to see this horror
1st: Keanu was for me the high point of the movie along with the other guy that steels himself to die when he realizes the containment chamber is failing. Keanu really acts like a real alien ambassador that arrives to Hollywood´s image of Earth and just realizes what a loony bin your average disaster movie is.

Ok, end of the movie the nice aliens go home and spare the world from the nasty bugs but.... wait a minute? they shut down the lights before going home, our civilitation is going down the drain! Hey Mr Alien considering that most of the human race live in big cities. How are we going to heat our homes in the cities?, harvest and transport the food to the population? Care to tell us how are we going to govern our countries if the communications are gone? Yup great, we can no longer nuke the world because our high tech stuff is gone so we´ll wreck it WW4 style with fire and guns.
Once again explain why you stopped the bugs? It was perhaps to make the little kid hate you more when/if he grows up and realizes the you put us into?

I saw this horror. Don't see it if you value your life. Don't see the Spirit. Wife made me see. We now know why the chicken crossed the road-in a vain attempt to commit suicide to end the pain of the memories of that film.

I watched it online as a direct feed before Christmas.
Glad I didn't go to the cinema for it.
Keanu was alright.
The Smith kid was really annoying, its like they just stuck a kid in there to make the movie more suckful.
Nice effects but no real plot to enjoy.

But the kid seems to be going the right way at the begining. WoW, Halo3, now we have to bring him to the Grim Side of the 40k.
And the Army? Is the Pentagon filled with idiots? it seems so, from the Secretary of Defense playing all the evil official (TM) cliches in a 1st contact situation to the bomb guys that apparently don´t know how to bomb something. Hey Hollywood guys! the joke is "Brute Force, if it doesn´t work you are not using enough" so if you previously nuked the bugs with no effect do you think 4 palsy napalm bombs will work now?
Another classic movie remake ruined because FX does not equal to an updated script (of course adding kids, dogs, racial minorities, unnecessary female leads when there were none in the original movie also is an epic fail to me)

War of the Worlds was fine for watching on the in-flight entertainment system during a 12 hour flight before the multi-channel systems were introduced.
