Dark Eldar? I think we're still waiting for something more concrete and detailed than the "we're working on them".

HA!

You never give up, do you?

After a decade of GW just saying "oh, we're working on Squats", and then finishing with "meh, they were eaten by Nids", rumors of any Dark Eldar without pics of new minis (or a verifiably GW-leaked pre-production Codex) are meaningless.

They actually stated whenever asked at various cons throughout 2nd Edition that Squats weren't dropped and not to worry. They then updated their psychic powers along with everyone else's in the Dark Millenium expansion, and even proudly displayed 2 new Squat miniatures in it's pages, as if to imply that yes, they really were still being actively thought of.

Those 2 miniatures ended up never actually being released, the Sisters of Battle suddenly got an entire range of miniatures dedicated to them along with a Codex out of nowhere, and not long after, 3rd Edition came out and Squats were wiped from the face of 40k.

Now, sure, 2nd Edition wasn't actually a decade long to my knowledge. That's just hyperbole. But the fact is, there was an established race, they said they were working on it, even threw the players a tiny update, and then released a whole new never before seen army and subsequently declared the other one dead. With the exception of declaring them dead, all of this can also be said of the Dark Eldar. They've been given a slight revision to their codex, but are still actually running out of the same one they've had since they were released in 3rd, despite it being 5th Edition at this point. The Tau were brand new, just as the Sisters were, and at this point have gotten two Codices since release, along with having a complete miniature range plus some models actually being redone and several kits added to the line.

Mind you, I actually believe Dark Eldar are being revised, and that they are simply holding things very close to their chest, but it cannot be said GW hasn't done exactly this sort of thing before.

True, but when 3rd edition rulebook came out, was their an entire section dedicated to the squats with lore, background, a map of the galaxy with all their activity in them, beautifully rendered art of them, and even a section in it that details its units and rules?

no, didn't think so. Wait, they did in the 5th ed rulebook. Hmmmm....

Seriously, They spent a lot of money, time, and space in the 5th ed rulebook to give them some justice. Plus, I did read an article about this very subject. And you are right, they 'were' working on them up until the release of 3rd edition. But, at that time, they said they wanted to take 40k into a different direction and felt the Squats as a race really didn't have a place in that new direction (in the article they described them as a 'joke' that and many players did not take them seriously).

Obviously this is not the case in 5th edition because they are (again) obviously in 5th edition and look well supported.

The fact that we have so many people (not just here in Dakka, but all over the world) that adamantly claim that Dark Eldar will be 'written off' shows us that 40k enthusiasts are some sad and depraved individuals.

I just think that trying to guess the release date for DE is futile at this point. The best info I've heard is from that Jervis/Jes podcast, where Jes said that he was working on them, but wouldn't even speculate as to when they'd be ready.

HBMC, look in your 2nd ed. IG Codex (which was one of the later ones, IIRC). There should be some promises about the upcoming Codex Squats (and Codex Imperial Agents) in there somewhere.

I think Dark Eldar are the new squats

I don't know if it's relevant, but I was flicking through the 2nd edition IG codex and they claim the Squat codex was being written. Under the allies section, it says you can take them as allies one the codex is released, as one is in production, or words to that effect.

SQUATS
The Squats of the Homeworlds are a proud and independent race that evolved from mankind. The are divided into many rival Leagues. Although Squats and the Imperium have fought long wars in the past, the most powerful Leagues are now firmly allied with the Imperium At the time of this writing this Codex is future release.

You may include troops chosen from the Squats Codex

Codex: Imperial Guard, (c)1995.

I'd call that future proofing, not information about an upcoming Codex. And I'm sure they had every intention of doing a Squat Codex during parts of 2nd Ed, but as they got further and further along they realised that it was a bad idea for all the reasons Jervis hit apon in his big 'why the Squats are dead' article from a few years back (ie. that the Squats worked in Epic, but all they had for 40K were short Guardsmen who like bikes - not enough to base a race on).

I mean Christ, we've got more indication that they're working on a Dark Eldar Codex than they were ever going to make a Squat Codex, and DD seems to not believe that... yet at the same time is really wanting Beastmen to make a come back in Guard armies. Not only that he can't help but bait eager DE players... boggles the mind really.

I cant believe they gave that as a reason... I mean Orks are pretty much not meant to be taken entirely seriously, but theyre still one of the most supported races. The Squats were before my time, but I cant help feeling I missed out.

Some stuff is never coming back. The beastmen were odd, I never got how they fitted in with the fluff. And human bombs? What, suicide bombers in this day and age?

The reasons were very simple - not that they were a joke race, but that they couldn't get the concept to 'click' in 40K. They even used the example of Epic, where they had done a full Squat army as a complete playable race. And they worked. And people liked them. But they admitted that they were unable to replicate that in 40K as so much of the Squats came from their machines, and al they had for regular 40K were Trikes and short Terminators. It didn't work. There was no hook - no spark of inspiration - nothing to make them different from Guardsmen or Marines or even Sisters or at least different enough to warrant a full release.

Updating their psychic powers in Dark Millenium and making test models does not mean that they were 'working' on a Codex, or that they were fully committed to giving them support. It's something they wanted to do, sure, but something they found themselves unable to do.

I think the gap between Marines and IG is due to the wave 2 of models. Orks get a second wave, does anyone else get new stuff?

He's obviously trolling regarding DE. You guys just have to ignore it. Brimstone, Yak and other people we can trust have said that they're working on them. And in this environment, I can't imagine GW devoting resources to something they never intend to release.

DD obviously enjoys getting under other members' skins. Why? Only his psychiatrist can answer that.

Saying eldar fill the niche where dark eldar would go is like saying space marines fill the niche where chaos space marines would go.

The back story for each share a similar origin, but have a radical divergence that explains what happened to those that had opted for a different direction for their futures. Also, space marines and chaos space marines actually play on the table top in a much more similar fashion than eldar and dark eldar do.
