Marines: I started 15 years ago with marines, but I sold my army long ago. I actually feel kind of bad about it because I had several conversions, such as a squad of assault marines with hand flamers, that did not convert well to 3rd ed, and I sold the army about a year and a half before 3rd came out. I had no idea it was coming though, so it is really a case of hindsight being 20/20 I guess.
Guard: I'm a big treadhead. In fact, i'm really missing my tanks now that I don't play IG anymore. No matter what the rules say, Eldar tanks just aren't tanks.
Eldar: I picked up Eldar when I decided to get serious about painting, as I think the army lends itself to experimentation with different painting techniques. In fact, I think there is a model in the Eldar range that would be well suited to virtually any technique. I've even considered dipping guardians and running a horde of them. Most importanly, I like the fluff. The idea of this deeply introspective, doom-ridden people mourning their lost past just really appeals to me.

Orks... mainly because of AoBR.
My friend wanted the Space Marines in the set and I was happy to take the greenskins. They are fun to play and are now quite competitive with an element of unpredictability
I always have one eye on Eldar though. My first army back in 2nd Ed was a Biel-Tann force. Never finished painting it and now that I've more patience, I'd like to go back and start it again.

1) Chaos - in all its glory. I have been playing Thousands Sons for awhile now. Mainly, started Chaos Space Marines because it was one army not played in my old gaming group and I like the fluff and style.
2) Eldar - always liked elves, especially my Fantasy High Elves and Wood Elves, just a natural extention to play elves in space. I like the sleek design for their ships and character.
3)Inquisition - whether it be Daemon or Witch hunters, mainly the fluff, some cool models, and the ability to order around other armies of the Imperium
Unfortunately, I always wanted to see some rules for a mercenaries army; yeah there is always "Count as," but still.

Yes I too am naturally drawn to elves with my Eldar and High elves in Fantasy.
I dunno why but perhaps its the whole "anything you can do I can do better" attitude and there was one quote which really had an impact on how i view Eldar "Their arrogance is matched only by their firepower."
Plus the models are great and I have issues painting the same colour scheme again and again, so the different aspect warrior colours are great.

my current, first and only WIP army right now, is a combined force of Raven Guard and Salamanders.
I've always been drawn to "stealth tactics" and precision military maneuvers and all that jazz, so there came the RG. I am in real life, a pyro as well... so the salamanders were a natural fit, and since i couldnt decide on one chapter alone, i bought the company box set, and now half will be RG and half sallies...
i currently have my eye on the Wood Elves from Fantasy, they look very nice, like a ton of fun to paint, and from what ive read up on them, they fit along similar veins to the RG (stealth, and strike where its least expected)

1st army was eldar. There is not really a god reason why I started it, but now that I have had it for so long, I am very happy with the army and couldn't imagine having started with any other. I like it mainly due to my play style in many video games: fast and agile. I guess the main thing I don't like about it is the strength and toughness 3 throughout the army, but thats the trade off for speed and agility.
Just recently I also picked up a tyranid force. Besides the fact that I inherited a few nids from a friend that stopped playing I actually started this army due to my appeal to monstrous creatures and swarming units. I love having tons and tons of small units on the table in addition to having 8 giant creatures causing havoc.
If I were to choose a 3rd army, It would probably have to be orcs. Once again, having a ton of units on the table is just appealing to me.

First army has always been Eldar. I absolutely love the models, the fluff, especially about the Avatar and Harlies.
Second are Tyranids. I wanted something 'completely different', and their fluff and figs captured me.
So, on days when I wanna be 'good', I'll pull out the Eldar. On days I wanna be 'bad', I'll pull out the nids. All bases covered!

First army was Space Wolves, just because of their character and the ease of conversion. Sadly, that army has been pawned off... Other Space Marine Army is foot-assault based, and very fluffy. I thoroughly enjoyed building and painting it, even if it doesn't play so well! Current Project is Mech Eldar, which I love for their evasiveness and torrents of decisive firepower. The painting aspect is also top notch. In FB I play Greenskins and Skaven, both nice horde armies with different play styles. Both are very characterful, though tedious to paint. I now have four armies based around brown, green, or brown and green... Hence my latest 40k model doesn't hold much promise for breaking that trend.

I enjoy playing with my Deathskull Ork Army. I have a great time modeling outrageous conversions. It allows me to go wild with my ideas. I love putting down scratchbuilt and looted tanks, and seeing my opponents' reactions to my handiwork. I used to always have trouble winning with my army, but to me, the hobby aspect was much more fulfilling than the gaming aspect.

1) Orks. I've been playing orks since second edition, when my buddy game the 20 pastic orks and 40 plastic gretchin from the second edition box set. I don't know if I fell in love with them, but I loved playing the game (even though I lost almost all the time). I took various big breaks from the game. Returned for about a year in 2003 to play in the GT in Baltimore (I went from never playing to just playing in the GT - I didn't even know the new rules (3rd edition) very well but I think I was middle of the pack. I really loved the KoS army I had and just loved having trukks zooming around (biggest problem with 2nd ed. vs. my buddy's SM army). Then I stopped playing again then started up again in the 2008. Kept up with the orks then tried to get my fiance to play by painting her a Notre Dame Space Marine (Blood Angel) army. Gold helmet and pants, blue armor. Death company had the third jersey green armor. She didn't take, so I also have a space marine army. I don't think I could ever get rid of my orks, plus I really love the flexibility in game play and the multitude of unit combinations and army lists. Still prefer trukkboyz, but am starting to play with mobs of shootaboyz on foot.
2) Space Marine army (see above)
3) Dark Elves. Decided to support my FLGS by getting into fantasy (had all the orks I could ever want - except for the new stuff). Always wanted to play Eldar and I like Elves in fantasy. I always like the bad guy though (decepticons (soundwave was my favorite) and Cobra (storm shadow was my favorite), so I didn't want the HE. Went to the dark side. I haven't played a game yet with them, but I think I will like the tactical use of elves versus the in your face orks.

My primary army is Tyranids, because technically I always win. Stopping me on one planet means I eat three different ones instead. I love being the implacable foe that you simply cannot defeat over the long term.
My secondary army is Grey Knights, because they are Marines, but more awesome and fluffy.

When I got back into 40K I debated armies and it came down to the Tau, Necron and the IG. I used to play SM but I wanted to try something a little different. As much as I love the IG the idea of fielding so many models was a little intimidating...one of the reasons that I've been hesitant to try that Night Goblin army that's been in the back of my mind.
I went with the Necron because I've always liked their "space undead" feel, and when I read the codex I decided to go with them. The models are cool, the background is great and they're fun to play. Now, once I get my 'crons where I want them I plan to build that IG army (waiting for the new Codex!), but that's the future.

After about 15 years of playing I have played every army to some degree or another except Space Marines. That is the only army I can just never get into or get behind. My current project is the IG......so i'll answer the question in regards to them
IG are amazing because it is basically a bunch of lowbie humans w/ nothing but courage and tanks against everything else. No genetically engineered super humans, no old advance race or crazy armour saves...just swarms of lowbie humans supported by tanks. Love it
|
You flatter me. But really, I'm just an ordinary guy. I put my pants on the same way anybody else does: I put a gun to the head of my manservant and bark Russian military commands at him until the poor blighter either figures it out or watches his brains exit his forehead.

Imperial Guard: for the tanks, and for the masses of grunts dying. It feels like one of the more "tactical" armies, in that you have to set everything up properly or you get creamed. It's always tense when playing guard. Massive templates scattering everywhere, buckets of dice for lasgun shooting. I love using drop troops (command squads, special weapon squads, veterans) as my "flexible response" element. And I like the way Sentinels look, even if they suck right now.
Tyranids: Alien hordes, what's not to like? Massive armored Tyrants and Fexes with bioweapons inspired by HR Giger's art, floating brains than can zap tanks, tons of gribblies to do the dying, meiotic spore sacks dropping in...and everything is fast fast fast. A horde of nids running at someone always seems to inspire panic and poor decision making. My favourite moment was charging 6 Ripper bases at a lone Tau Crisis suit HQ that had wandered into my backfield, and eating him alive over the course of two turns.
Death Guard (oops, Chaos Space Marinez): Relentless, tough, already-dead ancient warriors, huge fat pustulent greater demons, cyclopean plaguebearers...tentacly possessed Land Raiders rolling up to disgorge T5 Terminators and TYPHUS. Nothing makes an opponent feel futile like having only one or two of your models go down after an entire turn of his shooting.

Darkwolf
|
1st Army-Space Marines. I started out with my own Chapter the "Black Lightning" which ended up being nicknamed the "Duracell Squad" due to it's black and copper scheme. When the new marine plastics came out I designed the "Dark Hounds" which featured a dark green scheme and were mistaken for Dark Angels. So, now I've put together a small Space Wolves force as well as a Deathwing army.
2nd Army-Imperial Guard. Reason? TANKS! Oh and the really cool Steel Legion models Did I mention tanks?
I dabbled with Eldar for a while but never felt my painting scheme really complimented them. I have a fairly "gritty" style and I always personally felt that Eldar should be painted to look like the clean prissies they are. I've wanted to design a Tyranid force based around Genestealers and Carnifex' but shudder to think of painting the same Genestealer model over and over. I've painted a few Chaos models and some Inquisitors over the years. I even thought of starting an Ork army, but I keep going back to the marines and guard. I've never touched Necrons or Tau. The Necrons simply don't interest me at all, and while the Tau are intriguing, it's the Genestealer syndrome. So many fire warriors to paint for the army I'd want to field...

My first army was Imperial Guard. I love the idea of regular humans standing up against the horrors in the universe. Their sheer number of vehicles and soldiers keeps me coming back.
My second army was Orks. I was interested in them from the start - they were always my favourite bad guys. When the AoBR set came out, I snapped and started my new army.
My third army is Space Marines. I wanted to try something different from my other two armies - so I went for the Salamanders, and I'm loving it. Currently working on a Vulkan He'Stan conversion.
