Well it looks like GW is replacing your government in the empire building business.

Yeah... but we did it though didn't we? Go load up Google Earth and take a look at good Old Blighty, then take this green and pleasent isle and lay it over any one of your states. Not very big are we? However that small isle managed to control 1/5th of the world for 200- 300 years and who knows if WWI & WWII hadn't come along we may of still controlled a big chunk

This isn't condoning our past, but we as a small nation achievd something well above our weight. France, Germany and Spain, all countries bigger than us, never managed the same (which is why there is a lot of resentment towards us). Who knows we may of come back and taken another crack at the colonies... and this time taken it more seriously

Perhaps I'm wrong, then. I read an article saying that Brits don't really drink before a game so much as after.

I think the glory days of tailgating are gone, though, at least for pro games. My team's (Steelers) tailgating used to be legendary, but they've tried to rein it in over the past decade or so.

Well it depends on how you define fascinating. For one it can be defined as 'very interesting' and also it could be defined as 'charming.' If your talking the former then the holocaust can be considered, if the later then the British empire doesn't qualify either.

When people brag about the British Empire as if it's some remarkable feat of our nation we should be proud of, they are either skirting round the truth of how the empire was won, don't know how it was won or have some pretty screwed up values.

Nope, taken a look and can't find any reference to being patriotic being made by MDG. As to the holocaust, it is fascinating, when you put it in to context. It was a boody evil and twisted moment in history, but fascinating that a race could carry it out with such cold logic. Was watching re-runs of Auschwitz the other day and it brought tears to my eyes seeing what happened. However if I'd not been interested / fascinated in the subject, I would of not watched the program and been reminded (and learnt new things) about what horrors went on.

Wolfstan's post certainly implied a sense of national pride over the issue, that to me it patriotism.

Yeah, everybody has it's own share of Blood on their hands throughout history. The Brits have their Empire-building, the Americans have the Trail of Tears/Manifest Destiny, the Germans have the Holocaust, the Aussies have the treatment of the Aborigines....

No nation is innocent.

Where the hell did I indicate that I was being patriotic? I was just pointing out that as a small country we'd achieved alot considering our size. I do find that interesting and no I don't think we were evil, it was just the done thing at that time in history. Oh before I get berated over that, just remember that our current values are still very young. In WWII we were still able to lock up a woman for being a witch, in the 70's "The Life of Brian" was classed as blasphemous and women are only now being given fuller roles in the armed forces. This age of enlightenment is still very young.

I'm nto berating you. By your response to MagikalM it seemed to me you were throwing up the British Empire as something as a nation we should be proud of. Sorry if that was incorrect but it certainly seemed the case.
