And have a ball watching the said player try and move around that many big tanks without running into each other!

I personally think that they're worth the points cost. You get 2 twin linked lascannons and a twin linked heavy bolter, not to mention all the nice little goodies that you can purchase along with it.
I've found out (reading the Codex) that as Black Templars, if you take 1 command squad, 3 Terminator squads, and 6 troops, you can legally take out about 13 Land Raiders / Land Raider Crusaders under a force organization chart if you're willing to pay the points for them.
LOL... talk about a nice little tank division to roll out with.

im basically using the land raider for its armor value of 14 and the twin linked lascannons. Are there any better choices if im using it for firepower and armor.

Yes, quie a few actually.
Theres Predators. You can take 3 with Autocannons for 180 points, or 2 with TL lascannons for 205. Harder for your opponent to kill (2 targets) and can split fire eaier.
Or Vindicators.
Granted they arnet 14 all around, but if your just using them for lascanons and keeping them back, they'll only be hitting front armour 13 anyway

Be really careful with that... Dreads are excellent at many things, but they're the easiest vehicles to destroy. Even my bugs can demolish them with relative ease.

Since when are Dreadnoughts the easiest vehicles to destroy? They aren't any easier to kill then other AV12/12/10 vehicles with shooting attacks and are better in close combat since you do not hit rear AV against walkers.
Since you are also considering Land Raiders (I'd suggest the Crusader variant), my advice would be to take Ironclad Dreadnoughts instead of the regular ones. Their higher AV combined with that of the Land Raider will overload the opponents heavy anti-tank weaponry (melta's, lances, str9+ guns).

Well to be completely honest with you, they're easier for me because they don't get the fast moves that forces me to hit on 6's. That's what makes them easier to hit for me. Because I have so few ranged AT every shot is vital.
I'd also suggest the crusader too.... It's a wicked combination and with the transport capacity they're great.

I guess it depends on your army and playing style.

TBH, I like the Crusader the best. with so many shots it's really anti-troop, and the addition of a Multi-melta helps against the MC's and tanks that you will fight when you transport your Termies to their lines. Mmmmmm... TL Assault Cannon...

Sadly, your Leman isn't mine, but if they stopped using standard engines and switched to Lucifer Pattern, they could move like they're mine. Look down, back up. Where are you? Your in a battlefield with the Rhino your Leman could move like. Whats in your hand, back at me, I have it, it's the fire control for the Twin-linked Assault Cannons aimed at you. Look again, it's a Deep-Striked Land-Raider. Anything is possible when your Tanks move like Blood Angels, and not like Guardsmen. I'm on a Baneblade. |

Surround a Landraider with infantry and drop-pod + melta becomes a much less scary tactic.
But in response to the OP;
Yes.

Mmm.. Check your internet settings, try not to download when posting..erm.. only press the 'send' button once every 5mins (not three times in 20 seconds) and your questions depends entirely on what you want to do.
Landraiders allow sternguard to move in protected, unload & shoot in rapid fire ranges whilst Landraiders also allow for vanguard to move in close, unload and charge somthing all the while being incased by AV14. It entirely depends what you want to do with them. Its a good idea to perhaps try and make the most of their assault-hatches.

Mmmm... Spam-tastic.
But to answer your questions:
Land Raiders:
I'm sorry, the correct answer was Land Raider Crusader. And yes, they are that awesome.
Sternguard v. Vanguard :
Well, really it depends on the situation and your playstyle. For example, Sternguard are great for shooting things that you would like to die. On the other hand, Vanguard are preferable when you feel like having a deep strike mishap.

But yes, Land Raiders are crap. Land Raider Crusaders are the best thing since evolution decided that a high amount of nerve endings on the edge of naughty parts was a good way to get things to breed.

The important thing to remember is that LRs are TRANSPORTS. Meltas are the bane of LRs so expect to use the LR to get the right troops in the right place by turn two. If your LR isn't expendable after that to your specific army list then you may want to consider different tactics/list.
I have had my LR stunned/shaken at inopportune times more than I want to say. Every time it happened cause I got greedy and blew something to smithereens with TL Las but then had a swarm of raptors with melta up my A**
