Kudos for taking the posterboy army and trying something different with the stock scheme.
Personally, the super-bold highlights make me think of Tron more than the Ultramarines (especially those termies). I'd want to see them in person, on a table, and at a reasonable distance before I judge them for being too harshly highlighted, though. Photos can do funky things beyond simple magnification.
The power weapons, while kind of cool in their different way, don't quite sit right with me, either. It's a cool effect, but I feel like the black space left over is too visible to make it look like a blade made only of crackling energy, but not visible enough to really define the shape of the blade if it's meant to be seen. It could simply be a result of the photography, in which case ignore those comments. If the blade treatment is an experiment, I'd say the first sword and axe are promising. Not so much on the second sword.
Just my personal feelings, I'm no expert, blah blah blah, standard polite disclaimers. You went for a distinctive look, which you certainly achieved. Quite cleanly, to boot. Not my cup of tea, but I'm more than willing to acknowledge the technical skill behind it. Cheers

lol I get what you mean by the tron remark, they don't look like they do in the photos, my camera really makes the highlighting look too striking for some reason, from arms length it doesnt look so blunt.
as for the paint scheme it goes as follows for the entire army:
1. Chaos Black Base
2. Mordian Blue complete cover coat
3. Bedab Black wash
4. Ultramarine Blue 1st stage highlight
5. roughly 60/30 Ultramarine Blue to Space Wolves Grey 2nd stage highlight Automatically Appended Next Post: Heres the whole army to date:
I just acquired myself a whirlwind to mix in with it all, so hopefully that gets knocked over fairly quickly =)

When you call an intimate moment with your partner "the Assault Phase"
Is that followed by a pile-in move?
That brings a whole new meaning to the term "Hit and Run"
Can that be following a deep strike, or do you have to wait until the next round? |

I like what you did with the power weapons, especially the power axe. The predator is what really shines though, the free hand work you did on it on the top on both sides of the turret really makes it something special.
I did notice your black reach figure Sergeant is a bit cross eyed. Might want to get those pupils pointing in the same direction! One recommendation for the assault cannon on that dreadnaught, drill it! Grab a small hobby drill and drill those barrels out, it will really really improve the model. I always recommend drilling all barrels on everyone, but the large ones like the dreadnaughts really need it. At an absolute minimum, add some black dots to simulate the barrel holes, right now it looks incomplete.

Excellent work, darker blue and the real best in show for me here is the broken camo on the tanks and the tellion figure.

I like the highlights but I don't like anything else. Blue and bases simply look too boring (although some what well made). I paint very similar marines but they get used as basedecoration .
|
Every time I hear "in my opinion" or "just my opinion" makes me want to strangle a puppy. People use their opinions as a shield that other poeple can't critisize and that is bs.
If you can't defend or won't defend your opinion then that "opinion" is bs. Stop trying to tip-toe and defend what you believe in. |

I figured there was some camera-related wonkiness involved. There always seems to be something that refuses to let anyone else see what they actually look like (trying to take progress pics of my first painting experiments is hellish). Or, you know, you're a professional photographer. Or a very experienced hobbyist. Any way...
The group shot on the shelf looks a lot better, to my eye, probably due to the distance and lighting. I'm guessing that's more what they look like on a table, which is pretty darn nice. That standard has me excited, too. I really like the design and want to see it on a banner.

Lovely painting.
Can I ask the shading steps on that particular blue? I really love the depth of the shade in that, and the steps of the tones up to highlight stage - what did you do?

Of course there are a few lil steps in between that I do also, such as apply a second coat of bedab here and there for extra depth and neaten up highlights (when i can be bothered) most of it is just all to preference as i go along.

Nicely painted army. Colour me a little jealous, although the Smurfs I've been doing from Black Reach are up to your stage two, so maybe I'll have a bash at following your method.
