I bought 2.5 so far ( 2 boxes plus the tiles from another) Things i'd change: price, limited edition as already said, (oh and expansions yearly). I'd have liked to have seen more missions (12 is just not enough) and more 3d objects (like the dead marine) . All in all I am actually very staisfied with it though.

I just bought mine. I haven't opened it yet - I like to save up that part. There is always something special about opening a big box full of plastic minis and cardboard stuff (whether it's GW's or someone else's). That is until you discover one of the best minis is broken or doesn't look as good as it did on the box top.
I was going to mention the limited edition point as a questionable feature. From a marketing angle it's obviously worked well, as the game seems to be disappearing fast. The 'mystery box' thing was neither here nor there; once most of us had worked out it was Space Hulk, it became kind of irrelevant. I hope they don't repeat that particular ploy. But now that most of us that wanted one have got a copy of Space Hulk, is it really a bad thing that it's limited edition? Isn't there something cool about having something a bit exclusive like this? Of course, GW may pull a fast one and put out a general release version or something like that, at which point the whole limited edition thing would become distinctly dodgy.
As someone wisely pointed out, few if any people here have any real idea about the economics behind producing this set. Normally they need to sell a lot of any plastic miniatures in order to make back the production costs; I think this game was priced with that in mind (it seems to have less plastic in it than, say, BoBR). However, I've paid more than this for an equivalent sized boardgame, so the price isn't excessive in that context. I don't think the fact that other games are available from discounters is really a valid basis for complaining about the price. That's going off topic, however.
On the basis of what I've seen, I'd have just liked a few more plastic objective counters. I have to admit that the dead Marine was what made me decide to buy it - a few more things like that would've been nice. I agree with Gonads' suggestion about supplements, but the history of supplements for these boxed games suggests that with each one they become increasingly unbalanced. Space Hulk always seemed to work best when you stuck to the core game.

As it happens, the models do look like they have done in the pictures however, in relation to your 'broken' comment, be careful when cutting them from the sprues. Some of the detail work (chains, ropes, Crux Terminus', etc.) are actually joined to the sprue. Cut the smallest parts first - and gently - as to not break them nor have them be the only thing holding the item to the sprue when you're cutting the rest of it off. This goes doubly for the Lightning Claw guy.

Thanks, but I know they look like the photos on the box (and I'm fairly experienced at removing stuff from sprues ). I was thinking more of when I bought the World of Warcraft boardgame and all the characters' weapons were bent like bananas.

Not had a problem with the above in my Space Hulk. There is a minor stress mark on a Stealer Sprue, but that was from when I bunged it back in the box.

But which came first? The Rumours or the Mystery Box?
Remember peeps, the rumours out there were just that, Rumours. So to get upset when some of them were wrong, and then blame GW (who said nothing, which is better than falsely denying them) seems a bit off.

Alpharius wrote:Kilkrazy wrote:The Design Notes say they took the (rightly) acclaimed 1e rules, incorporated the Deathwing and Genestealer expansion rules (some of which were good and some of which were cack) and changed a few things 'just because'.
This was probably a mistake.
They would have done better not to include a lot of the expansion rules and they definitely didn't need to meddle further. Or at least they should have extensively playtested the changes they made.
Example: One reason the missions are so hard for the SMs is because without Flamer reloads or grenades, it's harder to advance compared to the 1e game.
Wow!
So, GW admitted that they did stuff "just because" and that they didn't play test the changes they did make?
Ouch!
What it says is:
Space Hulk published 1989... designed by Richard Halliwell.
Supplements added rules for Librarians and weapons such as the Assault Cannon.
The rules are mostly unchanged, with the exception that almost all the rules from the supplements are included.
We’ve also taken the opportunity to make a couple of new additions like the new Broodlord and the rules for going ‘on guard’, both of which will give players of earlier versions of the game something new to try.
We feel the result is the finest version of Space Hulk ever published. [Including the high quality playing pieces.]
I edited it for the sake of brevity.
As people may know, I was not a huge fan of the 1e supplements. The assault cannon and grenade launcher were good, the various H2H weapons were cack and I disliked the Psychic powers which made the Librarian too important at the expense of the rest of the team.
The idea of giving guns to Genestealer hybrids was totally stupid and thankfully has been left out.
In this edition the Psychic powers and H2H weapons are back. The Assault cannon is here but the tactically very useful Grenade launcher has been excluded.
The Broodlord is a completely new unit. It is obviously meant as a counter to the Librarian, however as I dislike the Librarian, I don’t want a counter to it as I don’t want it there anyway. GW haven’t said they play-tested the new rules or not. But I wouldn’t bet on it.
Hopefully this is not too subjective to make sense.

Playtest or no, this game is so heavily based on luck it does not really matter.
a single good or bad dice roll can drastically change most games, for example, if in the mission with the CAT the space marine player jams on the one turn that the CAT-holder has to cover a fire lane with overwatch, then he gets punted by some stealers, and then the CAT drives off behind a horde of stealers at the end of the turn, the game just became 100x more difficult for the marine player even though it may have been a tactically perfect game thus far.
Overall its a very fun game, balance is not perfect, but it shouldn't be, because that makes it more fun when there is an upset victory. It also keeps the games more friendly when both players know that one team has a distinct advantage, and so they dont stress over winning as much.

I agree it is a lucky game. One of the good things about Space Hulk always was that it played quickly, so you could play the same scenario as one side then the other.
Balance is still important though.
I don't mind losing a game because of bad luck. But it makes a game less fun when the chance of winning is based on getting very lucky rather than being good at playing. That's what I think, anyway.

I've enjoyed it so far, heavy skewing and favouring one side over the other per scenario. Tonight we're going to give mission five a.k.a. Decoy a try. Though for our own sakes and sanities we've decided to leave the timer out for the first few games, as we're still working on getting the rules down our heads.

Hi all.
I would have prefered it if Space Hulk had been re released as 'complete game with Limited Edition minatures at the current inflated price.
AND as a box without minatures at a more resonable price, so people could use thier existing minatures.
This rules +card stock only box could be expanded with 'Opposing Force' sets with race specific senarios and minatures.(like IG vs Orks, Tau vs Necrons, Edar Vs Chaos etc.)
This would widen the appeal of the game , and the potential cross over to 40k.

I had a chance to reread the 1e and Deathwing rules -- 3e is basically these rules with a few changes and tweaks.
Regarding game balance, lot of people have been complaining that the missions are a bit too difficult for the marines.
One thing that would even it up is to allow the flamer to reload. That's a Deathwing rule which got dropped from 3e.
The grenade launcher is also a very useful weapon from Deathwing, which got dropped from 3e. It had a range of 8, 10 shots, affected everything in a section like a flamer but with no area denial effect. Killed Genie on a 4, door on a 5 and Marine on a 6.

Dropping the timer from 2e was not a response to people not liking it.
1e Spulk was a hugely popular and successful game and sold buckets.
GW just can't let well alone. They have to fiddle with things. When they fiddle with something good, they often disimprove it.
That said, if you don't like the timer, it's not as if you are forced to

I don't understand all the bitching about the price. Pickup any of FFG's high end board games that cost 100 bucks and compare it to Space Hulk. Space Hulk will win every time, the quality of these miniatures for a board game are simply astounding. They are some of the best plastic mini's GW has produced to date. Furthermore the card tiles are HEAVY duty compared to the stuff FFG produces they are nearly twice as thick.

Support. That is all I'd want. As for this release, I love it. There are good ideas above...just incorporate them.
Don't like the timer...don't use it.
Want to use PA Marines or Harlequins...find those rules online (from old Journal articles). The beauty of the rules - simplicity. Just add to them based on existing rulesets.
Use the Grenade Launcher rules...I like them as well.
Speaking of the grenade launcher PF, the only thing I would like to add near-term would be a Space Hulk Terminator Captain as a plastic multi-part kit. Crossover between SH and 40K...load it up with Termie bits (power weapons, fists, ambidextrous, ornate chestplates) and include the SH rules in a WD.
