Came out over a year ago. Personally, I think it's Legion of the Damned, given the fiery shoulderpad.

yep defo legion of the damned. i might try and get an army of these guys just for the sheer awesomeness it would be to say they're black salmanders (would convert/greenstuff over/completely sculpt a vulkan he'stan model).

The new LOTD model isn't all that inspiring to be honest. i like some of the detailing such as the right shoulder pad and studded leg armour, and exposed cables which adds to the ancient vibe of the LOTD, but it isn't anything special with any "pop" or "wow" factor, nor anything that can't be replicated/converted with the existing SM plastics range.

The rules however are sort of juicy: deepstriking w/reroll and 3+ invul. saves means you will probably see these guys a fair amount (sort of an auto-include in Planetstrike for example)...

You got something kinda backwards here! The models are okay, but not terrible inspiring, I agree. However, they're completely useless for their points. They cost twice as much as a tac squad for the same killing power, and the deepstrike/melta combo is better done by Sternguard. I think that the Legion of the Damned models would just make for some nice counts-as Sternguard, and little else.

Oh boy, more marines! *snore*

I hear the new minotaurs look pretty awful, too. Musculature like "a condom full of walnuts". Think plastic rat ogres.

Went digging through my old posts, and guess what? I've been hating on mat ward since before it was cool

Wait and see is all I can reccomend. Remember, Miniatures are a form of Art, and everyone will have a unique opinion upon them.

Not that I've seen them like, though I look forward to it. Just hope I can paint up my Skaven before Beasts hit. Don't fancy doing two armies at once.

A move AND fire heavy weapon seems somewhat OK to me though...

I'll be taking a squad of them as a 'counts as' high tech covert strike team.

As previously mentioned, using the LotD squad to model up some different looking/acting marine squads is pretty interesting...

I like the aesthetic of these a lot, they look (IMO) much better than the normal SSS (Stand Still and Shout) style for Marines.

People should remember that these are technically just Tactical Marines, and so won't look right with too much detail.

Personally I love them and will be advance ordering.

As a slight side note, they fulfill a very different battlefield role to Sternguard IMO. Should be very good in Apoc games where there are a lot of AP1/2 and D weapons Plus the Relentless rule that comes with Slow and Purposeful should be very useful. Not a rapid strike unit, that's for certain.

The LotD are better at pulling it off at most, but I still don't like the idea of models that are supposed to be hardened fighters and carry burning torches around with them for no other reason than 'it looks scary.' I have a lot of SoB, too, and have managed to avoid that with them, too.

Flame weapons, sure. Don't mind those, and GW has a good idea on the 'niche' for such weapons. If a unit that is more aligned with the over-the-top religious side has a burning torch on something meant to look ceremonial, I don't mind. For example, the WHFB war-priest alter thingy, or maybe something like the Throne of Judgement. Essentially, models where the open flame is the kind of thing that fits because the model is literally a parade piece.

For Space Marines and SoB it's a bit silly, as it seems like they'd honor the Primarchs/Emperor/Etc. better by being good at their job and not carrying a literal blazing beacon to identify their presence.

(It almost makes me want to pull out an old idea of the Sons of Patton SM chapter, a loyalist chapter that draws a lot of inspiration from misremembered history, and as such actually uses camo and such.)

Good catch there! There's nothing new about this practice though, there have always been many such "repeat but modified" sculpts in the model range for the twenty years I've been buying GW models. However, given the fact that the Legion of the Damned are a new set of expensive and supposedly unique looking models, I am a tiny bit surprised in this case. But as someone else already pointed out they are not that different looking than the regular Marine range and so I guess this should not be a surprise at all.

Smart business practice is smart.

If you'll look at the Grey Hunters Plastics, you'll noticed those exact parts Space Wolfafied into plastic bits. Why? Because GW keeps masters that they simply alter or add on to as needed to produce new Marines(Jes Goodwin mentioned this when they interviewed him last year for the current Marine Dex and the history of Marine aesthetics) because it's faster and cheaper than sculpted an entire new marine for every single release.

They most probably use 3D templates and print them up, i wouldnt be surprised if many of the figure models are pure 3d design rendered.

Most companies re-use certain poses. Just look at the classic Matchbox toy soldiers. The US and German soldiers with SMG's both share the same awkward pose and near identical weaponry.
