heres my pictureless update...

i added some more darker tan/yellow to the shade/shadows and off white to the highlights and the minis do pop a lot more...im gonna finish the trims and eyes and ill post some more pics in a couple days

@ tinfoil: thanks for the compliments, really means a lot. i actually didnt like the plague ogryns too much except for this one here. After I built this guy up i had to get another (the leader) cuz i was realizing the have really really great conversion and sculpting potential.

@ lint: me2...i converted the oblits halfway from FW DG termies and im really excited to slap some GS on them. soon...

@ somnicide: sweet! did you friend finish your grinder? if you wanna see some finished guys i can bring some over to your paint night sometime if yallz got space

@ scrazza:

@ panic: but the head is the awesome!

@ halloweenbomber: well theyre supposed to be something in between. I wanted them to have a pre-heresy feel, but still recognizable as corrupted deathguard/PMs.

@ belial: cool do you have a link to pics of your DG tanks? your avatar is scary btw...haha

@ ezeKK: yep let me know if you have any other questions when you get to em

@ gitsmack: thanks! i do use an airbrush. I airbrush the undercoat on...then hairspray...then airbrush the basecoat...a rough blend with a brush (might end up skipping this step)...scrubbed...then refine blending with a brush again. you MIGHT be able to brush on the undercoat...maybe but you'll haveta make sure you spray a lot of hairspray on and that it dries completely. let me know how it works out for ya

@ r3n3g8bOy/Malika: thanks!

@Somnicide: Gonna do foresty-swampy bases...gonna keep to the "searching for the sacred nurgle sacrificial pit" theme. did your wife like the DG? @_@;;

@Scrazza: thanks, yea im still not 100% happy with them...hopefully the next squad will have better eyes

@Binky: thanks! the cool blues and violets contrast nicely with the warm yellow/brown tones...I'll try to bring that out a bit more with the next squad...

1) Basically you paint the model in the color you want your paint chips to look, wait for paint to dry fully
2) Apply 3 coats of hairspray, wait to dry fully
3) Then start painting the armor in the color scheme of your choice, wait to dry
4) Then run some warm water and stick the mini under the water and scrub with a toothbrush. The water will dissolve the hairspray loosening the top layer of paint creating random paint chips.

Interesting WIP! I too have been using the hairspray method on vehicles and on marines, but your approach is slightly different. I only use one coat of hairspray: do you think it makes much of a difference? I didn't submerge the mini in warm water, but just used a toolbrush soaked in warm water. The results look pretty similar.

In the FW book, the technique as they show it seems to result in a gradual removal of the outer layer. In my case (and it appears in your case as well), entire chunks of the top paint seem to fall off, which is great for the chipped look, but not quite the gradual build-up of transparency as in the FW book. Does this make any sense? Did you get the same experience as I am referring to or more the experience as shown in the FW book?

At any rate, I really love the result that you are getting. I too have tried the chipping effect on green and tan on top of rust. I found that ultimately the underlying rust color is a lot harder to see with the green (unless zoomed in) because there isn't enough contrast.

@Randyc9999: great comments! i find that the more hairspray i use the more the paint "flakes". i ended up blending the model to the point where there were multiple layers of thinned paint so i needed to soak the minis to have the water penetrate the blended layers. from the FW book...it seems to get the gradual build up effect you cant airbrush or paint too many layers on top of the undercoat. fewer layers of paint will come off thus you'll get a less "chippy" finish...i feel ya on the green over brown...its really hard to see on my test mini too...i havent posted pics up yet but i went through and highlighted the chips on the green armor with P3 thrall flesh to make the chips pop a bit

Hmm, perhaps I'll try it with very thin airbrushed topcoat (once the snow melts up here that is) to get a more gradual effect.

That sounds like a good idea. I'd like to see a picture of the result. In my case, I was trying to use the hairspray technique as a way to quickly weather a unit: highlighting the chips would have been a lot of extra work !

@ Panic: my 500 pt list is...

7 PMs: champ, PF, combiflamer, meltax2, rhino
7 PMs: 2 plaz, rhino, TL bolter x2

its actually pretty hard at 500 points...got charged by orks with PK and berzerkers managed to take out orks in CC and trade blows with the berzerkers. no HQ for me in 500 pts...just combat patrol so HQ isnt necessary

@ Cryonicleech: yea i see where youre coming from. they arent very dirty/rusty. they have paint chips but thats all the weathering they have on them right now. i might give him an oil wash + weathering powders to give them a dirtier look...but that will take away from the contrasting colors on the white...bone/white color + blues + purples

and hows chino hills these days...my folks are in diamond bar...heading over there this weekend

Honestly, in the list, I would recommend dropping one Oblit squad and take a Vindi or Defiler... I love those things

Personal prefernce though I guess.
And don't take a Personal Icon on PM squads, stuff can already DS with their stock MoN.

That aside I am loving your work! Especially the Prince. I would recommend that you make them a bit crustier though.

And how did you do the bases? I might just have to steal that technique for my PM's .

Let the galaxy burn.

@Zack: I toyed around with the defiler...but it doesnt have the ability that 2 oblits have to open up transports. MoN gives +1 T but doesnt guide teleportation, need an icon for that. i have two just in case...i need to bring down a tank or something with the termicide or oblits. i like the flexibility it offers...

whatcha mean by make them more crusty? you have any suggestions?

sure...the bases are a mix of spackle, sand, gravel, and white glue...mix it all up in a styrofoam cup and slap it on the bases sprinkle some sand on top and voila

yeah,
I have found lately that obliterators are worth the points for the ability to disrupt enemy plans, threaten tanks and maybe get their points back.

Vindicators are a great threat, and one good hit from it's cannon can destroy a entire squad of MEQ.Str10 blasts open up tanks too!
But with only one cannon and it's 24" range and armour 11 on the sides, a weapon destroyed or immobilised result is fairy easy to get and after that the enemy Can ignore it.

Vindicators are amazing home objective holders, you sit a Vindicator on a objective with a squad of Plague Marines and No assault troops will dare jump inside the 24" range until the gun is silenced.

I'm also a big Fan of Chaos Dreads. sure they are unreliable, but they are fun and once in a while you'll roll a 6 and get a turn two charge!

DAAAAAAAAAMNED right you can!! I am liking the too do list a GD from the plague hulks top half right?? that would look awesome!.

I agree with panic Demolishers can be amazing.

Chaos Dreadnoughts can be VERY reliable if you sit the psychotic fether on your flank and away from your men keep them out of the way for those one rolls and your singing armed with either a twin linked Lascannon or Plasma Cannon and make him pure armour killer keep your troops away from him.Sure he may die plus I dont need to tell you to stock up on Meltas and Plasma guns do I. lol

They dont call me Garybrandy for nothing!

@panic: i was trying out a list with 6 oblits and 1 defiler...i got the defiler by dropping the termicide, downgrading the princes, and dropping to extras off the PM squads...but it was taking away from the effectiveness of my units so i didnt include one. I agree with you on the vindis...side armor of 11 just doesnt cut it when you need to get within 24inches to fire

@boss_pimpalotz: yep, the top half...but im going to be cutting it up into pieces to repose and resculpt (:
