60+ models of my death guard are from FW.
The 100+ guardsmen from my renegade guard are from FW. It really doesn't cost that much more if you do the conversion kits. 40k is an expensive hobby, once you get over that, FW isn't THAT bad.

Currently doing my traitor guard list (using the normal codex to keep it tournie legal) with the FW stuff and while yes it's more expensive to do it; if you spread out the cost and take your time making and painting it at the end you will have a rare and (hopefully) beautiful army.

I know that feeling...
I buy the Cadian respirator packs for my regiment. That and Vulture Gunships keep my wallet nice and light. It gets to the point where I'm deliberately painting each individual guardsman to the best of my ability to maximize the time before buying anything new.
That said, I definitely think the price reflects the quality, unlike some of the GW stuff.

But yeah. I'm actually saving cash up for an Elysian army with all the trimmings come IA8. Love me some resin.
Ahh, another member heeding the siren song of the Drop Troopers
Slightly off topic, but what do you know about IA8?
Eh. I've wanted an Elysian army since IA3, but being a college student kinda prohibits it
And from what I've read:
IA 8 is a combined force of an Elysian regiment and the Raven Guard Scout Company being tasked a mission to assassinate an Ork Warboss and mount hit/run attacks on an Ork held Forge World.

I've got a 1500 point Elysian IG army, though I'm using them with a standard codex, sans tanks. I can't say I'm impressed with the line. Now that I've assembled most of my Army, I might do a formal review at some point.
There are some issues with Elysian troops. Firstly, they are difficult to assemble. In many cases, there is a gap where the arms are glued to the body, meaning you can greenstuff them, or leave the gap. confounding the gap problem is Forgeworld's lack of forethought into assembly. They over looked such minor details as the chest armor being too bulky for the rifle to fit neatly across.
The other major issue is the uniformity of pieces. I can understand the torsos, and there are a nice variety or legs, (except the running legs, which are way to difficult to fix to the base) but the heads and arms leave much to be desired. There are only two arm poses, the right arm being molded with the lasgun, and attached left hand, and the left arm being a handless stump, (take note) at either roughly 45 or 30 degree angles. There are a few other ones, but they are few and far between.
The heads are another story. They're all the same, more or less. They're all the same helmet, one type has a respirator, (if you buy the respirator head sprue seperatley) you get one per squad with a vox headset, and the company command squad has one head with the goggles pushed up. They're very boring.
I said earlier to take note of the fact that the right arms are largely one piece molded with the lasgun and left hand. This crates the problem when you intend to use special weapons in your squads. In order to do so, you have to do extensive, minute cutting, and the end result is still far from clean.
The overall effect are cool looking sci-fi troopers, with unfortunately not a whole lot of character. Lack of variety of basic pieces, plus a distinct lack of extra bits for power weapons and the like, make me wish I had stuck to Cadians. That said, since I've already spent all the money on my Elysians, does have me excited for IA8.
Feel free to ask me any questions about Elysians. I've got all the sets except for the Heavy Bolter squads.

im think im like most guard players who use forge world (im planning on getting some krieg stuff to supplement my cadians) then you just cant help yourself but to expand to a holl army, the idea of it just consumes you, imo.
so yes forge world armys are a real idea and an expensive one at that.

And I've started a renegade one as well.
It costs but the models are on whole very nice.
The Death Guard army was helped by FW 1st sending me world eaters before they were even on the pre-release pages and then replacing my order twice!!
I got 60 DGs for the price of 30!!

I didn't want to quote your entire post, but my comments do apply to all of your post, not just the bit above!
That said, while the its are expensive, I think they are designed with the "advanced" modeller in mind. Now, I'm not making assumptions about your modelling skills, but the point I'm trying to make, is that I suppose these kits will need a bit of tweaking to get them perfect, maybe a little more then filing down flash lines....I do know that alot of high end kits do call for the modeller to "fill in gaps" as it were....right or wrong, this is all part of the hobby.
In terms of variation on pose, I think any mass produced kit will have this draw back! If indeed it is a draw back. I wouldn't expect an endless degree of variablility within the range or any mass unit table top wargame range of figures....

Aren't Elysian models generally older than DKOK as well? DKOK likely require less model skill so to speak I reckon since they're newer and likely better designed but I haven't purchased either.

Yep, the Elysian models are roughly two years older than the Krieg ones.
I'd, quite frankly, be surprised if they don't make some drastic revisions to the line for IA8.

Probably more variation to the kits, but no real drastic revisions. I'm really hoping for more head options and more arm poses.

I'd expect a couple more variation squads(like how Krieg have Advancing, Firing, and At Ease), maybe a few specialist squads(like the Krieg have Grenadiers and Engineers).

I'll be the first to admit! I'm a novice. I only broke in to this hobby a month or so ago. So by no means am I advanced. Before ordering though, I was expecting at least the same level of variety as GW IG infantry squads. Unfortunately, doing things like having a trooper hold a plasma gun instead of the grenade launcher or las gun is a little more than just filling in the gaps, even. It takes an extensive amount of minute scalpel/filing work to do something as common as adding special weapons to infantry squads. In my opinion, it essentially boils down to them over looking what is a very common practice.
Aside from variation, all I'm really asking for is for Forge World to make the molds of the weapons from the Weapons Pack be one piece weapon, right arm and left hand, like most of the lasguns.
As its been said, hopefully they'll get looked at come IA8...

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House! |

I really enjoyed working on it, and look forward to REstarting it during breaks/etc. More so now that I have a better grasp on the great and terrible workings of the color wheel. I don't plan on publicly fielding the army (local tournies etc.) until it's fully painted, but will try out some tactics with friends.
My biggest worry is how fragile they are. I've played so many games where the other player has dropped their pieces on mine by accident, or knocks something over. It happens. However those were plastic marines, so I'm very worried about breaking them. I've already broken just about all my heavy weapons at one point or another myself. Soooooooo... mixed feelings.
