Well...um...yea.
An ideal CSM army set up as simple as it can be?

1-2 HQ
3 Troop choices in Rhinos
Hvy support options to support them.

I think that's as simple and descriptive of most compeititve lists as one can get.

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

Ideal CSM army also depends on the point value that you are using also.

Well, what standard should we use.
I personally never play at under 1500, which my previous post would be ok with.

I feel anything up is a bit wonky.
Anything under 750/500 should really be combat patrol at that point.

I wouldn't put dreads on the bottom of the effective elites slot list. That goes to possessed. When you don't even know what you're paying for, that's a problem.

A dread might screw up and fire frenzy when you need it to least. But in a mechanized army, they're another vehicle the enemy has to deal with. With the advent of run, they can get down the field fairly quickly when they're not shooting birds, and if the enemy ignores them figuring they're "not much of a threat", it'll cost them.

I just wish they still had possession, or even better parasitic possession. A close combat dread that gets immobilized is just...gone. Useless entirely.

I wouldn't say that possessed be on the bottom.

If you give the possessed a role first and then look at the daemon kin table, instead of vice verso, they are a highly functional unit. (ie, if you task them with counter charge.
Their only problem is being expensive.

The dread on the other-hand can not be relied on a particular role as they can ping pong in what they do.

I'm honored. Wait, no I'm not.

anyway, I agree with the lash/oblit/plague idea, it is the ideal chaos list currently, however cheesy it may be. But that doesn't mean I'm ever going to use it. I prefer to write complex back stories for my armies and have the lists match them.

"Never take fast attack"? I thought Stelek really rated units of 15-20 Nurgle raptors, at least in theory -- did people try this out & find it lacking? Seems to be a pretty cheap way to get a fairly hard-hitting unit.

(I've not played CSM yet, admittedly -- only just started collecting that army.)

Iron's list looks pretty spot on for rough values. Only two things I *might* contend, both of which I'm throwing the models together for for future games.

Chaos Dreads seem to be gaining in popularity, at least on the boards and lists I've seen floating about. They're cheap and nasty, if unreliable. I'm actually more nervous about "Immobilized" damage rolls than I am with them going nuts on me, but I'll let you know how it goes as soon as I have a couple of games under my belt with them.

Also not sure about not taking fast attack troops. Iron may be exactly right - they are expensive buggers. Having troops that can haul ass has to have some sort of use though, if only for particular missions/scenarios.

I'm not like them, but I can pretend.

Observations on complex unit wound allocation: If you're feeling screwed, your opponent is probably doing it right.
