No strictly speaking to your nit pick , No its not a direct discount.
But giving 10% of purchased back in form of gift certificate = allowing you to get more items with less amount of money is still a form of discount.

One you don't have to pay for anything with, the other you're still spending money...?
A discount implies that you're actually using real currency(a gift certificate is a voucher. not currency) for your purchase. You can apply vouchers to discounted items(provided the service/merchandise provider has the item marked as a discounted item), but you can't always do the opposite.

Classic. Even when GW does something nice they get flamed for "not giving a discount = most online retailers."
Sorry Luna but a discount is NOT a gift card/voucher. If I spend $200 at a restaurant and get a $20 gift card for doing so that is not the same as a 10% discount as at that moment in time I have to pay the $200 tab, not a $180 tab. Sure I could then come back the next day and spend $20 but I'm sure I'd spend it somewhere else first, whereas the gift card would require me to use it at said eatery.
There is a huge difference to most customers. I don't see them as being one and the same.

Whether you call it a gift certificate or a discount is pretty irrelevant.
Its well designed from a marketing perspective - rather than a 10% off the top, by releasing it in gradients you keep 100% of the profit from any sales that exceed multiples of $150.
I think in combination with free postage, its an interesting marketing idea at christmas time (I wont be spending, I dont need anything).
I dont think GW can be criticised for conducting standard Xmas discounting/gift certificate marketing procedures tho.
I personally think this is aimed at some of their very expensive terrain options out at the moment - when a board+fortress+extra bits clocks out at $1000+, it might be an attractive option for anyone close to the edge.

Its to get people to buy something after Xmas and hopefully upsell them beforehand to get that extra $15 gifty.
That would make sense but of course its no designed to attract people who buy from online discounters, but people who patron their hobby centres.

Exactly , get more out of your money is my point.

Yes its very clever , thats why i said its worse then a discount , because it forces you to go back to purchase more
I think in combination with free postage, its an interesting marketing idea at christmas time (I wont be spending, I dont need anything).
Its decent compared to normal GW price i agree, just too far off still from warstore or maelstorm
I dont think GW can be criticised for conducting standard Xmas discounting/gift certificate marketing procedures tho.
Not criticizing the gift certificate ( i actually like it because i assume it can be used as gift to others )
what i AM criticizing is , they arnt rewarding us for purchasing more . <-- ( this part is for you kanluwen )

...Of COURSE it's far off from Warstore or Maelstrom. They are, say it with me here...
DISCOUNTED RETAILERS
They pay full price to GW for it, and then make up their losses by selling at a discounted price.
What the hell do you want them to do?
Throw you a party for buying from them? Polish your shoes, walk your dog?
You're paying once, and getting a voucher that can only be used on their product at a later date(within a certain timeframe, no less). It's brilliant from a GW perspective. You can be assured that if Privateer or Rackham had their own, completely independent stores they'd do something of the same nature if they thought of it.

Kan, i dunno how many times you want me to repeat myself.
I just think its silly to get 10% back for a $150 , and you still get the same 10% back even if you purchase $1.5 billion.
You can re word it to w/e you want , it still wont change what im saying.

You don't GET the 10% back. It goes to GW, either way.
You don't use it? Congrats. They don't have to worry about getting rid of product for nothing.
You do use it? Hey. Good for you! You just got product, effectively, for free.
Does it suck? Sure. I'd love to be able to buy all the terrain I'd want to buy for my 10x8 table, and get a 10% of the value to put towards my Elysians.
It's a marketing ploy by GW. You don't have to like it, you don't have to comment that YOU think it should be better. You especially don't need to be thinking that it's worth of making some internet meme for a site that thinks it's fine to post PDFs/torrents of rules from the same company you're whining about.

Who are you to tell me this? Ppl constantly voice their opinions , 1 myself = no effect , *maybe* enough = some effect .
either way , voicing opinion = a way to improve something we dislike ( effective or not? probably not , but 0.00000000001% better than none )
Why dont you go tell the people on boycott threads to cease their actions?
You don't GET the 10% back
Like i said , dont nitpick because im pretty sure you understand.
10% back can be 10% worth of product. Like i have been saying ( and i'll say again ) It both work the same way for customer ( aks US )
that we can get more GW product for less money SPENT.
Oh here you go , im sure this guy speaks eloquently to what i have been saying this whole time:

Last Year Retail: AoBR box set = $60.
This Year Christmas Promotion: AoBR box set = $75 +$7.50 Gift Card (contribution from AoBR towards Gift Card assuming you spent $150 or more) = $67.50

And your bonus is even worse if you are stupid enough to spend more than $150 but not quite reach $300. Hilarious.

Personally if I had money coming out my ass I would not bother with the independant retailers as I want GW to have my money to further their game design... buuuuuut instead I have a local retailer that hooks it up with a standard 20%. Though I used to use GW's site back when their bits were top notch and you could get anything that they ever made so long as you had their catalog number handy. Then it was an added bonus when they would throw in a random bit each time you bits ordered. It was almost worth the bits order just to see what they were going to bless you with. My fav was the Pewter rock. Though I do think it is pretty cool that they are doing that, hopefully it will do well for them and they keep rollin out the Bag O Swag deals that they used to.

1. This is, in effect, a discount, one that binds the redeemed money to being spend again with Games Workshop.
2. The current standing discounts with online suppliers and large FLGS are 'pure' discounts, that's money in your pocket.
3. Even taking the redeemable amount and treating it as a discount, it still falls short of the amount already available from online suppliers and large FLGS.
4. Said online suppliers and FLGS will be having further discounts for the holiday season, producing a further saving and still leaving that money in your pocket rather than tied into buying more from GW.
The reason many of us are not impressed is that it's not an impressive offer, it's a cynical barb on the selling hook from GW.
Buy elsewhere is my advice, save yourself more money. (my actual advice is buy second hand from ebay or pick another company to purchase from).

Hmm... hugs?
I think half of this thread would be redundant if i have used the term "bonus" instead of discount oh well.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gift_certificates#Gift_certificates ( quite interesting read :3 )
So basically i was thinking of Tiered Discount / Tiered Bonus / Tiered Gift Offer etc etc ( tiered which ever people want to call it! ),
which GW dont seem to do ever?
