Different sources for me:
- FLGS, which also is a GW premium retailer, and offers 10% off the retail price
- the local GW store, since I play there from time to time
- internet for more "indulgement" stuff that I'm no likely to play (like the Pariahs I bought today for instance , and benefit from the euro strength against other currencies
- ebay and warstore for bitz
- Forgeworld
- the local military modelling shop for airbrush paints and more muted tones

Any idea what buying online is like from them? I had a look at the site, and they're a hell of a lot cheaper than the site I'd been using upto now >_>
In my opinion, they are fantastic. They work very hard to get the orders out asap, and are very quick to help you out if there is a problem with anything you ordered. I sometimes pop over in lunch breaks to the shop, and see them working quickly to get stuff out of the door to the post office. Like you said they are far cheaper than most GW stockists in brick and mortar stores and online. It's also well worth if you get a moment to check out their shop - they don't harass you unlike some GW shops.

I have nothing but good things to say about thewarstore.com. They take paypal, or phone orders, and offer a solid 20%, along with a good bitz service, and a never more than 5.95 shipping system. Either Dakka trades or Warstore for me.

I buy from Warstore occasionally, and I'm sure to make a nice purchase soon when I send in some bitz for credit. I do most of my purchasing from my FLGS though. They give me the same discount the Warstore has, plus good conversation and occasionally free White Dwarfs. Besides, I do most of my gaming there, so I might as well support the store!

I haven't purchased anything directly from a GW store in many moons. Most of my stuff comes from The Warstore purely for the amazing savings. That and the fact that there aren't any really good stores in the San Fernando Valley. (Well, on my side of it anyway)

I buy nearly all of my stuff [not just wargaming] online. Like you I don't know of any FLGS near me, GWs at least but not any proper FLGS.
I would also add that Paypal will not guantee any purchase unless they can actually get the money off of someone. If you like they act as a barrier between your checking account and the seller. A credit card will give you actual protection [it not your money your spending after all!]
Its worth pointing out that identity theft is not necessarily the same as stealing your credit card details. The former will mean credit cards and loans being taken out in your name, the later will usually mean someone dipping into your credit card funds without your permission. Not great thing to happen to you in either curcumstance but avoidable if you take care with your information [shred it all!] and only buy online with a credit card [not debit card!] which you know will give you full protection if the worst happens. It also has the added bonus of insuring your purchase for upto 90 days as well.
In you situation I would suggest getting a limited credit card since there seems to be very little near you and you don't want to miss out on your GW fix. Or if credit is not available to you [for whatever reason age, credit history etc] a Pre-Pay card which I understand are commonly available in the US, either with say a $100 limit purely for online purchasing or even shopping in unknown stops.
Back off topic, anyone know any FLGS in Essex UK?

GW stuff from maelstromgames.co.uk -- GW has a "screw Canada" policy when it comes to pricing. It's like they think it's the late 90s when it took 2.5 of our dollars to buy a pound. The exchange rate is now 1.65. With maelstrom's discount and free shipping, it's a no brainer.
For Privateer Press stuff, I go local, Hoard O Bits off of eBay and miniaturemarket.com
The local store is alright, but their prices aren't always wonderful and the distributors they deal with seem to mess up a lot or not have what I want in stock.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better. |

Interesting. My experience with Macpac on eBay is quite contrary to this. I usually get my items within just a few days, even during the middle of December I got items within about 3 days of purchase.

I don't buy anything any more. My new hobby for 2010 was "not spending any money on anything other than food, the mortgage and household bills" and so far this year I have stuck to it. With surprisingly little effort. There's been little that has tempted me to open the wallet for long enough now. Even the couple of items I got for Christmas were things that had been ordered months before, and by the time they arrived I was a bit "meh" about them. I've got more than enough unpainted crap lying around to keep me busy for long enough. Although to be honest, I am gradually falling out of love with the whole wargaming gig. I'm finding games (of whatever stripe) simply boring: its only pushing little models about and chucking dice around. I can't really be bothered any more. ANd the more I read about the shenanigans of GW, PP and Rackham the less I want to go anywhere near them with a hobby. And without the motivation of games as an end product I really can't be bothered to paint anything. My motivation for painting has ALWAYS been their use on the tabletop, so without the one, the other disappears. Maybe I've finally grown up?

Luckily the GW staff at my local hobby center is awesome--especially since they are 5 minutes from my house--so I like to support them to a reasonable extent. I try to give them 30-40% of my purchases.
That being said, I have a bunch of eBay searches saved and am always looking out for a great deal. About 6 weeks ago I discovered an ebay vendor who had unbelievable prices, but high shipping charges. Fortunately the guy was awesome and he managed to get a bunch of stuff to me at 30-35% off GW retail with actual cost shipping. Totally skipped eBay, which is probably why he was able to drop the price some. I was a little skeptical at first, but now he is the first person I go to when I want to make an internet purchase.
