The replies here don't surprise me. Lots of Apple (Apple is the company, not Mac as the OP states) bashing on this forum. It's oh so clever to call this product a tampon.
- The product page clearly states you can use a bluetooth keyboard or keyboard dock.
- I don't see the lack of Flash as anything other than a selling point.
- It uses wi-fi so if your network sucks, then it will suck for this just like your other wi-fi components.
- 3G is only a bonus and you pay $130 more for it. I certainly don't use 3G on my iPod Touch. I don't use a cell phone but it seems to me that the 3G plan of $15/month for 250MB is a lot cheaper than the rate cell phone users are charged. ATT charges $40-$55 bucks a month for unlimited cell phone data plans. On the iPad it is $30/month for the same unlimited plan.
- The hard drive is SSD Flash, not a platter. That's why the battery time is so much better than netbooks.
- The base model is $537.50 after MN tax, not $700.
- multitasking only doesn't work for 3rd party apps.
If you don't like it, don't buy it. You don't see me ragging on products that have tiny keyboards, run a tiny screen, use an OS two versions old and have various slots I'll never use with a battery life less than my laptop.
The iPad is designed to consume media not create it.
Why I will probably not buy it:
- only way I can see to get material on it is via wireless or buying an adapter for a USB connection. I'm not even sure how that would work since iPhone doesn't read external drives. I'm not sure if this would mount as an external device like a drive does, or I'd need to go through iTunes on either the laptop or iPad to move content.
- It is an Apple 1.0 product. These can have some hardware problems (see the 27" iMac or first unibody MBPs as recent examples).
- Future revisions may have the camera somebody upthread mentioned was an issue for them. It would seem a no-brainer to add for video conferences/chats.
I got a netbook earlier this year. It has over 9 hours of battery life, 160GB of memory (and 2GB RAM), runs all sorts of "apps", you know, like Word, Excel, ArmyBuilder, and so on. It also plays movies, lets me read eBooks. It cost a fraction of what this thing is priced at, with what appears to be significantly more functionality.
My wife has a wonderful term for those folks that just love showing off all of their clever apps at family gatherings, like Thanksgiving- Appholes. I'll call this product the iBad.
If you need a computer on the go, get one. If you really have to operate a computer for 10 hours without access to electricity, then maybe this product is for you. Perhaps Mr. Fry is right, and this will spark another large step forward for technology as a whole. I've never liked macs. I don't think I ever will.

I'm a mac lover, but this is not for me. While I can see the appeal for a lot of folks its just not something I personally need.
Gadgets are just getting out of control now. Not just apple but all of em. smart phones and everything else, it's just too much. Yay, lets blow $300 on a new cellphone that will cost us $100 a month to use so we can throw it out in 2 years and spend $400 on the next big thing and pay $120 a month to get 18G internet access in our pocketses!
It's just a waste.
If I need a portable computer, I'll buy a real laptop. If I need a cellphone, I'll buy a cellphone. If I need a MP3 player, I'll buy one. I don't need all 3 in one big piece of disposable technology.
- I don't see the lack of Flash as anything other than a selling point.

It isn't a selling point for people who develop using it. Believe me, it's used for a lot more than just watching animated cartoons on the web.
Yeah. It's used for ads. Honestly, what does Flash do that HTML 5 and server/client side scripting can't do? Flash can deliver video but so can lots of other things. My utility uses Flex to show me my energy use and it is a slow, slow cumbersome app. The only thing my employer uses Flash for is animated intros which can be just as easily done using a JavaScript framework and CSS.
If you use Flash on the Mac you'll also understand why el Jobso won't allow it on his portables. It consumes memory and battery juice like a fly on fruit.

Remember, they are trying to get us to buy things, not trying to be our friend. There is no reason we can't a spot of fun with them. There also isn't 'lots' of Apple bashing on this forum. To actually think such a thing makes me wonder if you even are on this forum that often. We rarely talk about Apple.

I use Flex quite extensively for web mapping apps (and Silverlight to a lesser degree) and this is very important when considering server load as most people do not want to suffer the overhead of clients consuming their mapping services when the client can bear the load themselves. Client side = more clients in this case. And in terms of web mapping, Flex is much more powerful and extendible than JS and I imagine other people who develop using it would say the same. Now I am not facetious enough to say that consumers of web mapping apps are suddenly going to switch over to the iPad but I can forsee it happening in the future especially as more and more people are using web mapping.

Here's the thing, the Ipad does not bring anything new to the table, and in many ways appears to be taking steps backwards.
The main feature appears to be the fact that you don't need a stylus, and if I am not mistaken, you can't really use a stylus with it. In terms of making something sound good on the surface (which apple does pretty well, and I happen to like a good amount of their products), they have succeeded, and all complaints are easily countered by asserting that this was made for Grandpa Joe. Because... we all know how much Grandpa Joe loves Youtube clips.
There is a market for this, and I am not trying to hate on it, I am hating on the hype surrounding it. Like a massive balloon carrying away a man in a lawnchair, Apple has actually managed to dig themselves a pit, that they can't magically pop out of. When you consider the fact that you will be paying for any fixes they happen to come up with, and those fixes may never actually arrive, this just looks like a fancy way to watch Youtube.
In the sea of overcompensating products that make your life shinier, this one really takes the cake. If you want to use this for it's actual intention, you will pretty much need the 3g network, that won't even work half the time because of issues with said network, and the fact that a bus, or a train, is likely to take you to all sorts of places where the network is just not going to provide you service.
I don't care if people buy this, but I do hope that Apple tries to focus on the practical aspects of their upcoming products, rather than spit shining turds into the next century. They could have brought a better product to the table, but they chose to bring this instead. There are much better products out there already, that put this one to shame. It's limitations are inherent to the business model itself, and it carries itself on the wave of hype that it can never live up to.
It is fast, it is shiny, and you are stuck watching Youtube clips with it. It is a recreational tablet, not a professional tablet, and it should be approached as such.

Wow I think Apple screwed up on this one - they're basically letting third parties come in and make a better product that supports the iPad's missing features like Flash. They're taking a few steps backwards since comparable netbooks are an overall better deal.
Apple products definitely have the "cool college kid" market and it seems strange to give reasons for those guys to buy netbooks instead since the iPad loses out on portability (if you're going to use it at school you're gonna need that stand and keyboard) and usefulness at the price of a sleek design. However in those circumstances where you need to pull out a computer really quickly it might come in handy - but I'm having a hard time thinking of such a circumstance.
Then again this horribly named product seems to be designed for business execs that travel on flights a lot. I'm really not liking the basic design though...you need to haul around that stand otherwise you've got to hold it to look at it. Seems strange to go hands-on for a type of product thats better hands-free in most useful applications.
Apple screwed up here and they must be getting too cocky since the iPad name is just laughably bad. Time to capitalize, Apple competitors.

Please. Did you bother to read the first page? "IMaxipad 5000"? Maybe I was overgeneralizing about lots of mac bashing.
Never mind that your paying well over the odds for old hardware and a glorified Linux GUI. Or that a PC of equivalent power (which unlikne a Mac can be upgraded later) can be put together for about 1/4 of the price of the Mac.
Macs are essentially computers for people who don't like computers. Whilst people are scared by technology (and lets face it they always will be) there will be a market for Macs.
BTW before anyone brings up the security benefits of Mac's. Mac's are only less prone to viruses because no one write viruses for Mac's. Its not down to any superiority on the Macs part. - Lucious AR

Those are just from this month.
I'm not loyal to Apple. I don't like the company's approach in many ways, but they make good products and their income is very high for only having 5% of the OS market. I stated why I would not be likely purchasing an iPad and tried to correct some of the misinformation in the thread.
I don't know what relevance how long I am on the forum has to the discussion at hand. I do have experience running Windows since 3.11 through Vista and Mac OS from 6 to 10.6. I actually went to the specs page for my info.
Filbert: A good rely, but I see most of my clients and visited sites using Google or Bing maps. I know Bing switched to Silverlight earlier this month as the default, but AFAIK Silverlight isn't on iPad either. I don't see maps as a killer flash app, especially with Google and Apple buying mobile ad companies in a likely bid to add ads to map apps. I do want to reiterate that the Flash client on the Mac is very inefficient. Open up process viewer when viewing a Flash file and you'll see it. I run a "click to view flash" app in my browser and rarely use it. I'm not saying there aren't applications for Flash, just that it makes a very poor fit for many users' needs on a phone or this iPad. I'll agree to disagree.
Well, this is why Apple is so secretive, right? They want people, apple and non-apple, to
generate buzz of some kind or another. So I'd say that it's fine that people want to discuss
it because people are playing right into Apple's hands.

Thats about right. there are more evil microsoft people on here than evil apple people as the market shares are relatively different. Plus you have a large portion of tech savy users in the field itself which via out of love or as part of their job tinker with the systems. By its nature Apple would be looked at more skeptically.
Besides I really hate computer/phone electronic gizmo ads and frankly Apple runs a boatload of them. That just means I hate MS less times during the day. I have the same intenisty of hate for both...

And I'm sure it could have those things also for the price of 2 of em.
instead they keep it cheap because they wanted to make a device for people to surf the web while they're crapping. I'm sure the iPod mod makers out there will be adding a toilet paper dispenser add on soon enough...
don't matter though, weather you want one or not, they'll still sell a bazillion of them just because it's the next big apple gadget.

I don't need an iPod jumbo to use while sitting on the toilet. I'm perfectly fine with my laptop while crapping.
Or failing that, my cellphone (LG ku990)
