Mac had their big announcement today for the next big thing that will rule your life that you don't really need and I am surprised there is no topic about it already.

Basic Info

Problems

No multitasking? Really? If you are listening to music and want to check your email you have to stop listening to music, ect ect.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

No, that's wrong. You can play music while running other applications on the iPod touch. It means you can't run two third party apps at once.

I like it. It's a good call on their part making apps cross-compatible. I'd love to try Crash Racing on it.
I was impressed by how they got iWork redone for it and based on that, there should be some very interesting apps for it soon.

That makes much more sense describing it that way.

It's more than just an iPod touch that won't fit in your pocket...it's also an underpowered netbook with no keyboard. It's the worst of both worlds! Although, it actually has a robust power source; it is powered almost entirely by the user's sense of self-importance.

Got to say, I was working in a Technology College in IT Support about 7 years ago when Tablets were first enroaching, and we weren't terribly impressed. Sure, they look flashy and Trekky, but ultimate didn't seem a great deal of cop....

I shall look upon this with interest to see if things have improved.

Wow, I saw the price to GB listing and had a sudden urge to punch Steve Jobs in the face. What a terrible, terrible product. I can't even imagine a reasonable use for this thing.

It looks pretty darn cool to me. I'll wait at least six months after it's release to consider it. The price should drop a bit and the bugs should be worked out by then. I'm wondering if it will be a viable alternative to notebook computers depending on how you wish to use it. It's quite slim and light. To me it seems like it's mostly a tool designed to web browse with some up neat features trundled into the package. It will only cost $30/month for 3G which also boosts the cost. The basic model was shown starting at $495 (16 Gb) while the fully featured version lists around $895 (64 Gb & 3G). You can pre-order now with a two month wait for the versions without 3G while 3G versions won't be out for another 3 months.

People have been talking about this for a long time. Nice to see it's finally been officially announced.

How in the name of Russ's left testicle does adding 3G cost $120? I can get no less than 3 3G modems for that price over here, and that's retail price, not cost price.

Once again, Apple seems to be able to charge stupid amounts of cash for absolutely crap hardware, poor software (i bet you didn't know MacOS is FreeBSD with a shiney new skin did you!) and even WORSE business practices than Microsoft (and you have to try pretty damn hard to do that).

About to eat your Avatar...

This product is a massive joke, that will play only to the people that WANT it to be a great product.

It is the worst of both worlds, in a shiny, shiny boxy, that we have all seen before. The Ipod is a great product, the IMaxipad 5000 is not, it is a waste of money for people who have too much to spend. The biggest drawback in my eyes, is how ridiculously hard Apple is trying to shine this pile of gak. I don't care about your Apps, they piss me off, as well as many other people.

At a price tag of around 700 dollars after tax, for a rather crappy network (that, from the sounds of it, is going to get even crappier) that you can kind of use the internet on, but not while using your precious Apps that are designed to counter any flaws in the original product...

Fail sauce...

There are better products that do what the ITampon does, better, and cheaper. If you want sprinkles on your ice cream cone, without a substantial serving of ice cream, by all means, support the Imaxipad.

"Note to Gwar"

Your flashing signature, annoys the living crap out of me. Sorry mate, I have to put you on ignore until you get rid of that monstrosity. I can deal with your avatar, mainly because I find it kind of funny, but your signature is probably the most annoying thing I have seen on this site to date.

It does seem to be an incredibly small niche in the market to fill and not such a good product to fill it with on the whole.

Since when was it underpowered? Hands-on reports have remarked about how fast and smooth it is.

No idea because Apple are generally reliable about battery reports.

Somewhere in south-central England.

I would buy one if it was smaller (eReader size) and had a camera.

Depending on your lifestyle, there is a niche for a product between the iPhone and the netbook computer.

I don't have an iPhone. I like to read electronic books. Easy mobile email and WWW on a device the size of a big pocket would suit me. It would be better for travelling than my current netbook or laptop in the sense that it's a device you can pull out on the train and look something up or read a book easily.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

What a ing joke this steaming pile is. Two decades of speculation and they put out an oversided iPod touch?

1) No camera. So no video chat.
2) No flash slot. Not really surprising, this is an apple product after all so until they put out an iFlash card I wouldn't expect it.
3) Pissant hard drive. Your basic netbook starts out at 160Gb of hard drive space. Starts at 160Gb. My MP3 player has as much memory as the base model of this thing.
4) Ridiculous 3G cost. I bought my 3G phone for less than they want for just the modem.
5) No multi-tasking. I mean who would ever want to run more than one program at a time? Oh wait, this is meant for Mac users, never mind.

It's either the weakest netbook on the market, the most defective iPhone ever, or an oversized iPod. Take your pick. Revolutionary this is not. I'm sure that over the coming months they'll come out with newer versions that include things like a camera or a bigger hard drive and maybe in a year or two it'll actually reach the point of being a year or two out of date ridiculously over priced entry level netbook.

Thorgut wrote:Since when was it underpowered? Hands-on reports have remarked about how fast and smooth it is.

When I ask my computer to do only one thing at a time it's pretty freaking fast too.

The tiny, tiny hard drive/storage is what kills this for me. Oh, and the fact that I can get a netbook for less that'll do much the same without the touchscreeny-ness.

It just seems too niche of a product to be of much mainstream use.

Plus, iPad is a terrible name. Why not iSlate or something at the very least?

Because people guessed Slate as the new name and no one thought they'd go with something as stupid as iPad.

The iphone is smaller than a decent ereader. What gives an iphone the advantage over
an ereader is probably its screen resolution.

What kills me about apple's gadgets is I need tactile response. Flat screen tapping
just doesn't work for me. It's probably why I don't proxy much in wargaming.
