If you enjoy playing the game, there's no particular reason to stop playing it just because they're not making it any more.

None of my friends are into it but I too ahve a few 100 minis so I have no problem wtih sharing. Unlike 40k there's not really 'mine' they're just things I bought.
usually I make up a squad for them for the intro game then let them pick for follow-ups. I'll miss not having more stuff come out (I was hoping for a republic gunship) but I'll hold on to mine. Probably buy more.

There's some talk on the Star Wars Minis boards of setting up a fan-collective to put out future 'virtual sets'... new stat cards for existing figures, or new characters with suggestions as to alternate figures or conversions to create them.

And lo, in the following years the housing market did tumble and the rate skyrocketed leaving the Emperor's coffers bare. A dark time has begun for the Imperium, the tithes can not keep up with the balloon payments and the Imperial Palace and its contents, including the Golden Throne, have fallen into foreclosure. WotC is owned by Hasbro. Heroscape is a WotC game, as it falls under the portfolio that WotC is used for (games other than standard board games, essentially). So if WotC have just passed on renewing the Star Wars License, you won't be seeing Star Wars characters in Heroscape.

No, actually, they do.
There is no one Star Wars license that allows you to make whatever you want. Companies purchase a license to make specific products. The license that WotC had and has chosen to let lapse allowed them to make a Star Wars miniatures game and RPG. Hasbro has a license to make toys and board games (and quite possibly other various bits and pieces). Wizkids, and before them WotC, and before them Decipher had the license to produce Star Wars collectible card games. Other companies have licenses relating to other products.
All of which is irrelevant since WotC, not Hasbro, are the company making Heroscape, and WotC are the company that just chose to let their Star Wars license expire...

At the summer camp I work at, the warhammer program almost died out, with about 4 campers and two councilors able to play warhammer, while there were 16+ kids and 3 councilors playing swm. We even had to pull councilors from other areas to assist the swm program. It saddened me, as warhammer was going extinct where I was, but this annnouncement might turn things around, as the children who played swm were obsessed with the game, and wouldnt do anything but play it, hell they would get into fights over the game. Maybe they will switch over to 40k, but only time will tell.

it was. sometime last year IIRC hasbro transferred the control/development of the game over to wotc (whom they own) which is the main reason you might have seen old d&d minis pop up in the latest boxed sets for heroscape.

Because they don't want to?
Or did you mean that they just call the game a 'board game' and keep producing it under Hasbro?
(Ignoring for a moment that they wouldn't be interested in doing so, as it's the sort of game that WotC is specifically designed to create, so would be counter-productive for Hasbro to take it on instead...) I don't know the specifics of the licensing agreements in place currently, but I do know that they tend to specifically define what is and isn't allowed. So, since Hasbro was producing board games and WotC was producing miniatures games, there is a definition of the types of games allowed built into the license.
There was a bit of a legal wrangle back when Wizkids released the Star Wars pocket model game, as Hasbro claimed that since it included clip-together models it was technically a miniatures game and so was treading on WotC's license and outside the bounds of Wizkids'. It was decided in the end that that it was technically still a card game, and so within the terms of their license.

That is what I meant turning it in to a board game bypassing the collectible part and have set figures.

It seems like the line wasn't profitable for them. As such, I really can't see anything new coming out of this from Wizards or Hasbro. Our best hope is going to be another company picking up the rights.

I played Star Wars CMG for a while. Not bad for a game tied to a map. One thing I really liked (are you listening, GW?) was that they had nearly instant FAQ feedback. WOTC, being used to facilitating a competitive game like Magic, knew how important it was to use consistent terms and clarifying language & FAQs

Star Treks CCG had a similar fate. It is now in the hands of the fans with the Continuing Committee. They have set the rules up a little better for balance, and some fans propose new cards or rulings for cards. If someone was to have the right group of developers they could keep the format going. But alas with no new product or advertising to get new players into it.....does not look good in the long run.

I played the Decipher Star Wars CCG. It was better than the WotC one, IMHO.
However, Decipher didn't piss it away. WotC had the RPG rights, then got the rights to make the card game when Lucas Arts would not allow Decipher to renew their rights. I guess they were outbid. Ah, well.
