Ok, sorry I've not updated ANYTHING, but I spent the better part of the day on friday in bed praying for the Emperor, or just any other lunatic in the world to come and cut my head off so it would stop hurting. (I get migraines. Really bad migraines. Like gimmie a gun and I'd contemplate using it bad migraines... Anyways.) Suffice it to say I didn't get a chance to touch a brush let alone use a camera with a retina searing flash. However I made up for it last night and tonight (yay no gf on vday lol) a bit and got his accessories finished as well as the bolters and started on the helmet. I would've posted hours ago too, some idiot who paints giant space marines left it on a few days ago and the battery was kaked. So without further ado, here's the updates!
The packs were given a soft highlighting of snot green, the straps got a 3:1 Snakebite/Skull White touching. The bolters casings were highlighted with Shadow Grey and the metal parts were painting Bolt Gun and then badab, then highlighted with boltgun and then the highest parts with chainmail. The stock on the Bolter was drybrushed with boltgun to make it look like the paint is wearing away to expose tiny ammounts of bare metal. The knifes grip was highlighted first with Ultrasmurfs Blue, then Enchanted Blue and finally just barely touched with Ice Blue. The blue strips on the... flash bang? were highlighted with a 1:1:1 mix of skull white, ice blue and water. The frag 'nade was highlighted with DAG after another badab. I also added a tiny tiny highlighting of pure Burnished Gold to the gold on the sheathe and brass on the knife.
Sorry it's so freakin huge
I about crapped my pants when I pulled this part off, I usualy make an absolute atrocity of anything that shines or is reflective...
This pic turned out like crap, but I love the intensity of the red

Just paint it like a statue? No way, that wouldn't be nearly enough for a model like this. The fact that I'm even doing this model could end up being an insult to decent painters everywhere who want one've these guys lol Though it would look excellent as a center piece in a ruined Hive....

Ok Dakka, so I'm back. whoopy. For those of you checking this out again, thanks for your patience, for those of you who forgot completely... Damn. But I still haven't done any real work in over a week, but I'm trying to get started again, and I'm having a hard time making some decisions about this model and I want your opinions this time Dakka! Don't just sit there being all quiet, give me some advice! So, my question is what colour should I paint the Aquila? White, Black, Yellow or Gold?? I wanna know what you think!

Nope, I don't have the control yet to do the whole thing airbrushed, or the patience. Only the red is airbrushed on, but I might make a stencil around the Aquila to protect the body if I decide to airbrush the colour onto the aquila, but I still need to know what colour I should use

I think you have to go for the traditional gold.
Unless you can get a kind of metallic black... sort of black, drybrushed gold?

I think i'd like to see either a nicely shaded gunmetal black or something in NMM
I think using metallics might look strange.
Also thought i'd point out I may have to steal this when you're finished. Its an epic model and your doing a great job on it

Wth doublepost
thanks toxic, but you'll have to wrench it from my cold dead powerfist first I keep looking at the model and grinning like an idiot, so I know how you feel lol. As for the suggestions, I don't know how to do NMM, and I think I'm a little confused... gunmetal black? You mean do it boltgun metal with black shading and edging and like.... mithril highlights? That could be cool. But I think I also like the idea Silver had, black with a gold drybrush.... I'll have to see how that looks on a bitzbox piece first, but it could be quite cool =o Anymore suggestions from ANYONE are more than welcome as well!!! Don't make me track you down and shove a bolter in your face to get an opinion out've you, Dakka

Yeah the idea I was thinking of was like a dark metal base with highlights to really make it shine. Youd probably want something that makes the aquila stand out from the whole model . . . but doesnt distract you from all the other GORGEOUS extras it has

Ok Dakka, you've made your suggestions, and I tried my best, I really did. Hopefuly I'm just massively over-critical about my work, but then again it could be mediocrity in paint form. I've added comments to the pictures cause I'm weird like that. Nonetheless, you've asked for it, and you've come to deserve it in my opinion: (That almost sounds threatening.... Crap.)
Any suggestions to touch this up are, as always, welcome!
Blurry Blurry Blurry, but the eyes show up so much better in crappy pictures
And yes, I hate Orks. Their exsistance annoys the hell out've me. Orks are like suggesting that Neanderthals could've built a freaking Particle Accelerator. Orks should stick to WHFB. I don't care what the fluff says, idiots like Orks couldn't build a freaking Galleon let alone a Space Ship. Orks PLAYERS are ok for the most part, just horribly misguided.
I'm not sure if this part is 100% done... I think I might want to add Gold Trim to the Mouth Piece and the helmets Brow Ridge. What does Dakka think?
I beat my head in trying to figure out WTH to use to fill in those display windows. Then I looked at my camera going "Oh God Please Charge Me Nuru!!" and I figured a Fuel Guage would be cool, and an EKG monitor was moms suggestion. The 3rd panel with the orders just felt natural.
And I'm not kidding. Last time I tried to freehand something Leonardo DaVinci rose from the dead, flew to Canada and slapped me twice.
So that's all I have *for now* Dakka, let me know what you think and spit up the ideas people! I said it in my first post, I'm HORRIBLY unoriginal so lend a hand Oh, also, some tips on painting battle damage would be like Christmas in March. I've checked the articles here on Dakka, but I don't like the simplistic approach some use... I seriously need your help on this part guys :(

For your freehanding, have you tried drawing out the image on the surface, before painting it, with a pencil? Failing that, you could always use a pin-tip Sharpie and draw the Blood Angels' Black blood drop on it. Wouldn't be the first time people have used a Sharpie for freehand, so don't feel like you're taking the easy way out if you go that way. It works great for text and anything you want done in black.

WOW
I mean really wow. That chest aquila is just the sort of effect I was talking about. you pulled it off amazingly
I had no idea about that display on the arm, this model just gets better and better. For freehand thats not too bad.
That weathering tutorial on the painting of the scaled marine SilverMk2 suggested was a good idea. Or you could do the sponging technique which seems to work faily well.
I dont think the gold trim on the helmet would look too great. If you were going to have the gold trim I wouldve put alot more gold around lots of other parts on the armour.
I cant think of much else right now, but im sure whatever you do you'll pull off well

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House! |

Thank you guys, you're all making this go a lot smoother! That being said I finished up the chest and head (except for high lights and darkening any seams in the armour), and it doesn't look like I changed much, but there's still a good 5 more hours work in it! Holy crap! Nice eye man! I wouldn't have noticed that for a long, long time! Sadly, it's embedded in the paint now since it's had about 18 hours to sit... But I'll excise it... RIGHT NOW!! AHHH!!! Ok, so I got it out without causing too much damage, just some mild touch-ups, but on closer inspection it wasn't a bristle from a brush, nor a hair from my head. No no. Indeed it was a hair from my little "helper"...
Fuzzy, cross-eyed little bastard.... But he's fun.
This is also the same cat I caught running around with a Marine I'd lost... In his mouth. He didn't wanna let it go lol, growled at me as best he could, which only made me laugh harder because he was MAYBE 4 months old at that point. I'm honestly not sure of the technique used to dirty up a model of *this* size. Airbrushing him with badab or even dipping him in a thinned solution of c. black would only serve to obsquere details, atleast I think so. Plus I don't have a proper medium to thin c. black to wash consistency, I'd have to use plain water and it wouldn't have the proper surface tension, everything would just run down and look... well runny. But if I'm totaly wrong about the air brushing bit and someone knows some secrets they're willing to share, I could probably convince myself to spend 6 hours taping off the parts I want left as is. I do, however, plan on using a dental pick to knock very small chips out've the paint and fill those in to look like battle damage/wear and tear, I just need some tips on how to make it NOT look like a half-assed attempt. It all depends on what kind've advice I get from Dakka really, as this has actually been a huge learning curve for me. If I'd known I'd learn as much as I did doing a model of this scale, I would've done one years ago.
And if this thread has managed to attract the attention of even just one of Dakka's more Masterful painters (Gods like MeanGreenStompa, atropos907 or littleboyblues to name but a few), then PLEASE! WHOEVER you are, I want your input, I really really really really *an hour later* really really do want your input and advice and any suggestions you could make! Even if it's just a whimsical one. Well if you can't freehand you must simulate freehand. You need to use a calligraphy font on your comp type out what you want print it on decal paper and apply it that way. There are decal solutions that help make the decal disappear after you dull coat it.
