I am not thinking of selling, so resale is not the motivation. At this point in time I am not really concerned if it clearly counts as a ork codex vehicle or not. I am creating a model that I believe Orks would actually build in real life, regardless of whether or not it is acceptable to play in an actual game. Besides I am really enjoying the time I'm putting into the model and it is a great excuse not to do homework!

It might be cool if you put some big tacky handles on the sides, so some Boyz can hold on and shoot things while it's hovering around.

Also, if you put some flat panels on a engine connecting it back to the main body, like it had been broken off then they just welded it back on, that'd be awesome.

For a finishing touch, get some cotton balls and spray them black, not too much so you get some black and some white, then pull them apart and pile around the engines, so they look like they're smoking.

The big ol' copta blades are an awesome touch. Replace high tech with crap, definitly orky

I made a few changes:
- add a ork to pilot the vehicle (the head was taken from a deffkopta and the body and controls from the trukk driver)
- added more dakka to the front
- carved out the rear of the devilfish so the turret sits better in the vehicle. Prior to doing that the turret was not seated properly and had a tendency to fall off when I moved the model. The only problem is that it lowered the turret and the gun is practically shooting the ork pilot, oh well, it can't be helped.
- trimmed down the size of the turret in order to allow the engines and propellers to be more vertical. It now has more of a VTOL look to it, which I really like. The engines still have the ability to rotate which I am going to keep.
- added bullet hole and other battle damage (not sure if it turned out that well, I need some advice on how to make battle damage)

I'm debating whether or not to do something to the sides and the back of the model. Any suggestions?

Brilliant! I love the pilot, it really adds to the character of the model.

The bullet holes look pretty good, too - I especially like the ones on the intake.

Adding all the extra dakka on the front was a nice touch, too - helps break up the clean silhouette of the Devilfish while being a very simple conversion.

As for the gun being too close to the pilot, remember, these are Orks - the pilot would love having the boom of the gun be so close!

For the back, perhaps the only thing I can think of is add some kind of highly visible exhaust system - big ol' honking smokestacks would really look neat on it.

It's complicated."

Dude, that pilot is awesome.

I can just hear him screaming everytime the cannon fires.

The tack on guns up front break things up nicely.

Awesome model, I can't wait to see it painted.

I love the pilot.

I still think i could use some armor plating, but I can't think of exactly the best way to do it.

I think you should remove the side doors and put orks or grots sitting in the holes shooting out of the sides.

I like the handles idea, or ladders, hanging from the cockpit sides for orks to hang from

rivets always help make things more orky

Take off the side door completely and have it dangling by a wire, which is being held onto by a grot who's surfing/holding onto for dear life on the door.

Might make it a bit too silly, but it'd still be cool.

If you're up to it (which I think you are), you could cut away some sections of the skin of the vehicle with your choice of 'rotary tool', and model some mechanical gubbinz in the space. Might make it look a bit more like the orks resurrected it from scrap

I think building for the joy of it like this is the pinnacle of the hobby (for modeling). There's really no reason you couldn't use this in-game. Just whip up a few custom rules or, if opponents can't accept those, it's "just" a looted wagon.

I would use the Tau Devilfish Rules, possibly altering it slightly to make it more Orky (lower BS, "Don't Press Dat", etc, but keep Hover and add GUNS).

In a game of Apoc, this sort of conversion would especially SHINE.

There is fluff in the Ork Codex also re: Orks looting a Tau World and taking all the best weapons. So you know Orks would do it.

I really dig it, and personally, I don't think you need to add more stuff to it. The trick from now on should be done with the paint-job you do on it.

Beautiful. So very orky.

I'd say paint it up with Tau colors and then drip others on, as if the orks just splashed paint on it.

"If you really want to know what it was like, to fight in the air in the great War, then go up to someone you have never met and who has never done you the slightest harm and pour a two-gallon tin of petrol over them. Then apply a match, and when they are nicely ablaze, push them from a fifteenth-floor window after first perhaps shooting them a few times in the back with a revolver. And be aware as you are doing these things that ten seconds later someone else will quite probably do them to you. This will exactly reproduce... the substance of First World War aerial combat and will cost your country nothing. It will also avoid the necessity of ten million other people to die in order for you to enjoy it."

For battle damage I take a drill and lightly go over the model, so I end up with deep scars on the sides...but I do this after I paint so the original gray shows through.
Another thing is I dry brush the edges with bolt gun metal gray the right amount looks good, but too much looks cheesy

*By the way I like the pilot, you did a good job with that. I know how much of a pay cutting that stuff out can be.....

Red, rust, metal. Have it look as if it was red before it was looted - then you have exposed metal and rust from battle damage and the orky additions.

Just a suggestion of course

I've been busy with school so it has been a while since I had an opportunity to do anything. Actually I should be working on homework right now, but I decided to take a break. Anyway, here are some pictures of the latest changes to the looted devilfish. At this point, I think I'm done with the converting and now I need to go ahead and get painting. However, I am not fond of painting and it tends to take me a long time to get motivated to paint anything, so don't expect to see a completely painted model for a while. Besides, I still haven't decided how I want to paint the model. f
