I'll be there, making snarky comments and harassing everyone in general. Don't now if I'll play or not, but it's gonna be fun regardless. I've always attended the GTs as much for the social aspect as the gaming and I think this is gonna fit right into that category.

So it's sunday and STILL no battle reports? C'mon guys!

How exactly did this tournament happen? I've familiar with like 6/8 people in those match ups. I would've paid money to watch that.

Good luck with that mate. I'm no Christian but I'm pretty sure the deepest circle of hell is something like being in a car in DC during rush hour.

It's not that bad. I'd rather commute on 495 than 66 any day of the week.

Either way it's not so bad as long as you don't mind becoming good friends with the folks on NPR. Even though Diane Rehm sounds like she's about to die every time she speaks we've become very closely over years of commuting.

Or you just go to work early enough (it's 6:30 and I've been at work for an hour already) and leave early enough so taht traffic doesn't much matter. Course, it wouldn't matter right now anyways as I live in Woodbridge and work at Belvoir, about 25 minutes door to desk.

I'm super looking forward to Stelek getting his @$$ handed to him

Yeah, and I'm super looking forward to reading all of the excuses people will make if he does win. "Stelek just got lucky! He doesn't know what he's talking about, he sucks at 40k! Dash is awesome, Orks are awesome YAY!"

This proves nothing, this whole "grudge match" bs is pointless, but that's exactly what will happen. If Dash wins people will NEVER FORGET IT, this will be the defining proof, once and for all, that Stelek really has no clue what he's talking about. Dakka will never let it die. If Stelek wins however, it'll just be a repeat of that time he went 5/5 with pure Grey Knights at a GT, despite everyone predicting he would do much worse. A couple people might say "Oh yeah, uh...good job!", and then everyone will go back to saying Stelek doesn't know how to play 40k. It will mean nothing if Stelek wins, and in reality it won't mean gak if Dash wins either, but like I said it'll be the defining proof that Orks are win.

Yeah, people are trying to play it cool and say things like "Oh it's just for fun, there's no 'grudge' here, no one's being competitive!", but I think we all know better. This didn't start off as the "Whiskey Challenge" after all, and we all know that some people are inevitably going to take this seriously.

That's just my opinion though, which means nothing to nobody, so...lol.

The people who take it way too seriously are pretty much precisely who we are subtly poking fun at.

People either nerdrage about internet loudmouths getting a chance to actually play each other, or are entertained. Both result in entertainment.

If you've taken the time to read through my various blog posts in prep for the Open, and in prep for the Whiskey Challenges, etc., you'll know that it's not about "proving" anything ... and that I'm not the type to even put stock in one-off games proving much.

If you haven't ... well, firing from the hip is fun ... just, not accurate.

Wow...

Sidstyler, you really thought this one out eh? I'd encourage you to leave your drama somewhere non-dakka and non-Nova related.

Our game isn't about whether orks are win or not - but about whether they are "lose" or not. Stelek's viewpoint is that orks are the worst (or close to it) codex in 40k. My viewpoint is that they're not. The point of the game is to demonstrate to him some of the capabilities of orks - I think it was an obtuse statement, and hopefully written out of ignorance of good ork players.

We have a professional disagreement, not a personal grudge. If you wanted to see violence and police.....well, Mike didn't pair up BBF and I; we'll see if BBF comes through on his threats of violence.

I don't know Stelek, couldn't pick him out of a crowd...I just think he says some dumb things about orks. There's plenty of people here and elsewhere who think *I* say dumb things about Orks.

I've got a friend who used to not be a friend - I showed up to a tournament and discovered that he and friends called me "DashofIdiot" because he disagreed with my ork tactics. And...he told me that when he won our game at the tournament, he was going to go back to every ork post where he disagreed with me and point it out that he was right and I was wrong. Three games later, including game3 on the top table against him - I had 90/90 battle points and won best overall.

Could be that Stelek just needs to be converted. We'll find out Friday night.

@Sid

On a side note it wasn't a pure GK list. It was pure Daemonhunters. I'd give mad props for someone with pure GK going 5-0

On a non sidenote I won't hold it against Stelek if he loses to Dash. If it helps open him up to the idea that Orks might not possibly be the worst codex then that's the best we can hope for really. Dash and Stelek have no actual animosity. Shoot, it took pounding Dash's face in Vassal (he lives across the country from me) to get him to take a breath and realize his way of playing Orks wasn't the be all end all. A single game can swing the opinion of the people playing it.

I don't think anyone seriously thinks that a single game can determine if someone sucks at 40k or doesn't know anything. Add in most of us will be a little toasty from happy hour and it's got all the makings of a good time

Dash, I've got my own challenge to issue to you!

Win or lose, I challenge you to make an exception to your "no more batreps" policy, and post a batrep on your match with Stelek.

I don't have anything against either of you. I just think it'll be a good match and a good read.

If you don't, then I will tell the whole internet that you were afraid of my challenge and, by extension, my awesomeness! ; )

This vaguely reminds me of the Friday night pre-game activities two years ago at the Vegas GT between Marc Parker and Stelek. Marc was playing Orks and Stelek was playing Seer Council. I think the Orks won that game too.....

Lists and army are a factor but the player and experience with that army/list is what maximizes effectiveness.

This time there may be a little less hostility on both sides ... I blame the way in which the players have been prepped for it ...

Use the iron sights!

I know full well that isn't what's intended, but I'm just saying that there will be people putting stock in these games.

That's one of the great things about Dash's batreps, Sid.
He always provides pictures (barring issues).

The picture *I* want to see is Stelek having a swig of the Captain! : )

Met Dash while he was in town for an interview yesterday ...

Most entertaining part of the visit for me?

As he's on the phone with his wife ... "Would you believe, Mike's actually a 29 year old, in shape, normal guy ... I thought he'd be an old fat guy."

Apparently people think tournament organizers = old fat guys. I need to stop hitting the gym and age 20 years.

Honestly, I was also a little amazed at how you looked at the charity tournament last year . You do look rather... normal for having what I think must be supergeek () status for organizing a tournament of this size!

So, kudos for that

See above, getting old, can't quite pull the all-nighters any more.

And copied from the IFL forum (so don't blame me if the link doesn't work):

Friday, August 13 at 8:00pm the NOVA Open live broadcast will open up to the internet and we hope to see you in the chat room! Preparations have been underway and we at the Gamers Lounge are excited to be hosting this broadcast from the Friday night gaming activities. We will be interviewing the players in the Whiskey Challenge, getting thier insights, and tracking how their games go. Who are these players and what is the Whiskey Challenge you ask?

Andrew Sutton (Stelek, Yes the Truth Hurts) vs. Justin Hilderbrandt (Dash of Pepper, Dakka poster)
John Steele (St. John, Three Plus Save blog; YTTH co-author on occasion) vs. Jeremy Chamblee (Chumbalaya, Blackjack and Hookers blog)
Tim Williamson (The Tau of War blog) vs. Chris Dubuque (Jawaballs)
Daniel Matulich (Danny Internets, Bald and Screaming blog) vs. Brad Townsend (Hulksmash, Dakka poster, Hulksmashstudios)

Then on Sunday, August 15 we will be broadcasting footage of the top table for the NOVA Open finals, the games that are determining who gets the "Vegas Golden Ticket"!

For those who can not participate in person this year, join us in the chatroom and take part in these parts of the events.
