The matchups are up on "whiskey and 40k" and I am pumped to see some real grudge matches. Here is the list for everybody to check out:
Stelek v Dash of Pepper
St. John v Chumbalaya
Old Shatter Hands v Jawaballs
Hulksmash v Danny Internets
I'm super looking forward to Stelek getting his @$$ handed to him and seeing Chumbalay get revenge for all the horrible things St. John said about his mother.
What are you guy's thoughts? Who's gonna pull out the W's and L's?

and here I thought it was the nova open.... not nova con...
But as someone who is playing this game there Friday Night for fun and not the entertainment of the internet drama community, as most likely some of the gentlemen and ladiies on the list, it would be nice if your framing of the discussion was a bit more mature and less....
Any way we can get you do reframe the discussion so its constructive to make every aspect of the NOVA open exciting and positive?
EDIT, Mike beat me to it :p
I personally think that the "publication and broadcasting" of the games, by people are regarded as tactical leaders in the game, can put a positive spin on how our hobby evolves...
I could totally see this being something that can help newer players learn solid and useful tactics AS they are being played! Education and Learning FTW!

A single game doesn't prove anything, regardless of whether your favorite wins or not.

I doubt anyone actually participating sees this as "proving" anything, so much as being fun.
Well, and it'll be fun watching all the handwringing as the "competitive" gamers fail to live up to some peoples' over-negative opinions of them.

The people participating, well, maybe not, but a lot of people simply don't understand basic rational thinking and statistics (not just the dice-rolling kind) that says you need multiple data sets to show a trend, and even then that doesn't "prove" anything but many times merely suggests a relationship.

While correct, I'm not sure it needs to be that complicated.
Tournaments in general are not statistically evaluative even in any sport - the NCAA tournament or anywhere else where it's actually or effectively single elim, for instance ... just because one team wins even by a large margin means very little.
That said, the type of person sitting there going "I care not for the result, it doesn't mean anything because it hasn't reached a statistically relevant data set" is basically an unimportant commentator in the sports and gaming world ... it's basically a non-point; short of hundreds of games between players, you aren't going to prove anything to "everybody," so the whole subject becomes pointless.
My $.02
These players will take what they will regardless of their uniform understanding of the notion of statistical variance and the need for larger test samples. The people who watch and listen to the games will probably feel about the same.
PS - Shorthand of above: Since you can't do anything in sports, games, or most things in life, about the lack of a statistically relevant dataset ... join the spectating world, have fun with it, and declare your "best of the moments" ... a bad string of dice rolls is akin to a bad string of calls by the ref.

Well, whoever wins the Open itself will be adding more statistically relevant information to the pool. However, I think that, given detailed enough battle reports, analyzing how the players play will be more relevant to determining how good they actually are, rather than just relying on who wins each game.

Man, the Chumbalaya/ St. john 'game' is gonna be good. i can't believe they even agreed to play. Of course similar things could be said about the Dash/Stelek match.
Why was the grudge match thing a good idea again?

+1
The only two people I've heard of up there are Dash(because of the drama involving him all over this forum) and Stelek(because Dash constantly brings him up.)
Oh, and Hulksmash, who is by all accounts a fine human being. Three. I've heard of three of these people.

You've never heard of Jawaballs?
This isn't entirely about celebrity, although for almost all of them I can tell you exactly how "well known" they are - when they announced their attendance, the hits on the nova open site altered in response. Kind of an easy correlation. When our hits went to 30,000 after 1200 the day before Stelek "announced" his attendance, it's a hard sell to blame that on ... well, not Stelek.
The "humor" of it is in treating anyone who plays a silly toy soldiers game as a celebrity, isn't it? It's just as much entertainment to watch people troll it with a " lol so boring" as to see others get excited and ask about MMQB'ing it and getting video feeds or radio broadcasts. Those of us just having a good time ... well, we're the majority, and I think most of us find it some level of interesting.
I find soccer intensely boring, but that's not true for everyone. I'm in the business with relation to this event of providing entertainment, and proving a few subtle points.
Dash of Pepper and Stelek have a great, congenial game together? Proves a bit of a point that's important to me.
Tons of people "View" the u-stream / recording? Provides entertainment.
I don't think there's a need to jump the "boring lol" train ... but if you want to, you'd better prove you feel that way by ... you know, not posting it
Edit: Boring Special Character Name Version 2.7, I think that's not really the point ... bloggers / forum-whores / "e-celebs" are the people being paired off, not "Tournament Champions." I don't think we've marketed it as that, and for a reason. That said, Hulk and Dash do have their "golden tickets," and we've got about 10+ attendees on the 40k side with their tickets already in total ... so it's not a total scrub crowd ... well, depending on your standard

I would see the humor in it, if I didn't think that there were some who were taking it a bit more seriously than you're letting on.
As far as the rest of the gimmick is concerned, I suppose I watched too much wrestling as a kid.
I bet Stelek hits Dash with a chair when the ref isn't looking and then Dash and Hulk challenge Stelek and Danny Internets to a main event team match at Adepticon.
I know that they're all well known in their own way, just promote it as something that's supposed to be goofy and fun instead of " 40k Grudge Match 2010: No One Gets Out Alive" and people will most likely lay off on calling it the egocentric non event that it seems to be now.
My small fraction of a dollar.

Don't worry, NONE of these games are going for "rawrrawrawr" competitive ... I hate to bust anyone's bubble, but it's not like they aren't all agreeing to the matches independently ahead of time ....
There'll be plenty of open gaming space that night; I've added you two for one of the tables.
Casey you'll have a game. Everybody gets a game ... we're just making a bit of a hoot and holler over the big tough guy / blogger loudmouths while we're at it.
