@Matthias

We will have two brackets on the second day so that everyone has the chance to play the full weekend. Basically the 40k event will split into two separate tourneys on the second day using the results from the first day to determine the split. We feel that it's important everyone has the opportunity to play both days, especially people who are traveling a long distance to come down for Bolter Beach II. This aspect is borrowed from BoLScon which was well received by the players in Austin, Texas. Splitting the field of players has no effect on the top bracket and keeps it exciting for the players who will go into the lower bracket. This also means we can hand out more awards and prizes, which is always a good thing.

Players in the top group will retain their W/L record from the first day while those in the second group will start fresh on the second day. We are planning on keeping game time at 2 hours per round both days.

If we have up to 32 players that will require 5 rounds over two days. If we have up to 64 players that will require 6 rounds over two days. If we have 128 players then that will requite 7 rounds over two days.

So why don't you guys just say 6 or 7 games and cap out the number of people eligible to play? I ask that because it's better for your possible attendees to know the schedule before they sign up. Personally seeing what you guys are doing and based on last year I'd probably settle out at 64 people and 6 games. That gives you 3 games a day and allows for a full RTT style event day 2 as I doubt your going to pull in 128 people and unless your very close to that number 7 games isn't a good idea.

I guess I am just not a fan of dividing the players like that. The biggest problem with running what is essentially a modified single-elimination event is that you leave a bunch of people behind really fast. I understand this is what true competition looks like, but I think it is on the shoulders of the TO to come up with other ways to keep the event interesting and to keep players playing that is not directly related to their tactical prowess on the tabletop. The Renaissance Man award from the NOVA is one way to do this. We are using something very similar at AdeptiCon. Awarding traditional soft score categories is another (divorcing them from the W/L record) or having scenario specific goals that any player can accomplish. Providing alternate events on Day 2 is another...and I suppose in essence that is what you are doing to a degree, but I guess I feel ideally that event would be unique in format/special for those players and not just the loser bracket of the main event.

We are also taking the above ideas one step further and awarding technically 4 Renaissance Man style awards - one for the true Overall and one each 'allegiance' (Imperial, Heretical and Xenos).

Most of what the NOVA format was about was inclusion. I think introducing division into the mix is in opposition to that mission.

Agree with Hulk here. If the intention is to draw out-of-staters and people from far away, then you really need to have your start and end times set in stone early. People flying in and all that will be much more inclined to attend.

Hi Matthias!

Thanks for your insight. It is appreciated.

We are planning to draw in the neighborhood of 64 players. This equates to six rounds. Even if there are only five rounds we plan to hold only two on the second day so people have plenty of time to return home on the Sunday. So maybe we will need an extra round on Saturday - this should not be an issue since everyone will be there in sunny Sarasota... while everyone else in the rest of the country is freezing.

Thanks again.

We did take a page out of BOLScon with making 2 separate tournaments. The 2nd day is where the Ren man award will be the prize of 1 tournament while the winners of day 1 play for tournament champion award.

@thehod

I'm confused. You guys are saying that the record won't carry over until on day two for the lower bracket and that it's basically it's own tournament on Day 2. But your only going to run 2 games on Sunday? The only way I see that set-up working is if you do 3 games Saturday and 3 games on Sunday as then it's basically a fresh RTT.

Also I'm confused. So a guy that have an amazing army and win all his games on Saturday but not be eligible to win Ren. Man/Best Overall? Seems a little messed up because basically you are running people out of a chance at the "Best Overall" if they win to many games. Who deserves a Ren. Man more? The guy who won 5/6 games with an amazing army against the toughest opponents there or the guy who wins 4/6-5/6 with 3 of those wins coming from the lower bracket?

Just looking for some clarity.

Still doesn't have the schedule info or how your going to resolve the "non-winners" bracket or the Ren. Man award(Best Overall). The scoring page is also extremely uninformative. I know people might be more inspired to sign up if it was clearer. I've got some friends in Florida who are considering it but won't sign up until they know how everything is actually gonna work.

@To all:

I apologize for the delay in messages. I am constantly talking to the organizers of the event and squaring things out. As noted above we are going to run three BB RTTs this month to give our missions a complete playtest. These will be happening in Orlando, Tampa and one other locale. Final details will be released after we have time to review the results and see if any changes are needed.

What we can tell you is everyone gets to play two full days. The number of rounds will depend upon how many players we have. You can expect there to be 3-4 games on Saturday and 2-3 on the second day. Those in the lower bracket might play an extra round on Sunday if needed. We always start early so expect to be there around 7:30am each day. We will have everything wrapped up by 3:30 to 4pm on Sunday. There will be awards for best overall champion, then the winner of the 2nd bracket, player's choice for army along with additional painting awards. Expect lots of great prize support again.

Our system and missions are being thoroughly tested, this ensures there are no problems during the event. We received lots of positive feedback on this and Bolter Beach I was a zero drama event. We want to maintain the highest level of fun and quality gaming. It looks like there will be a significant increase in those attending so even more work is required on our part to raise the bar. We promise you'll have a heck of a great time.

I found out this week Games Workshop will be providing a healthy amount of prize support for Bolter Beach II. I'm sure we will have lots of nice battle forces to hand out as door prizes again. I also spoke with Battle Foam this afternoon - looks like there is a good chance they will be supporting us as well this time. My partner Yuri Devilbiss and I did a short podcast interview with the 11th Company a couple of weeks ago so a big shout out to those fine folks! Possibly they will be there at BB II to run a broadcast. The 11th Company is very excited about our new format:

*W/L scoring system with Strength of Schedule
*2nd day the field will be split into two brackets so everyone has the opportunity to win an award! Note that anyone in either bracket can win best army, player's choice and best sport.
*No Best Overall anymore! Best General, Best Army, Player's Choice and Best Sport will receive an equal amount of prize support - they are all equal now (more on that below)
*Missions are being play tested at local RTTs across central Florida for player feedback.

Locally there has been some concern that we are running an Ard Boyz style event. In fact nothing could be farther from the truth. We have eliminated composition and I think most people are happy about that too. There are still soft scores for sportsmanship and appearance but with the new format these scores along with your W/L record are kept separated from each other. Because there is no longer an award for Best Overall this just makes good sense to me. I think it will also help to entice everyone to score sportsmanship more honestly since your soft scores do not affect your overall W/L record.

So basically what we have done is take what we thought was best from other big successful events like the NOVA Open and WarGamesCon (formerly known as BoLScon). And we kept true to our original mission by providing you with challenging fun missions. Our sample missions have been modified based upon the feedback we've received from players at our RTTs - we even went so far as to drop one altogether since it was pretty much universally panned.

So it's looking pretty darn good again this time around plus we already have more people registered as now than the total number of people who attended Bolter Beach I. I'm trying my best to entice more clubs to come down and play. It's going to be a good time for sure.

Bolter Beach II is actually not on my traveling schedule for next year. >< Would love to play against you, but I can't set plans for which GTs I'm attending yet due to developing circumstances.

However there is always Vassal (vassal40k.info) that you can download and catch a game against me anytime that we can schedule one.

And in terms of drinking....if we went shot for shot of rum and you kept up with me for 10 minutes, you'd earn a healthy dose of respect! And in the unlikely scenario that you can drink me under the table, I wouldn't regret conceding the game due to an inability to continue. =p

*EDIT* At the Socal last year, I started with a fresh 5th of Captain after lunch, drank through game four, and it was gone 10 minutes into game 5. That had me swaying and cheerful and definitely unable to drive.

*further edit* And as a further consideration, I haven't seriously even considered Bolter Beach II because I'm 50/50 that I'd sign up and BBF would tell me that I'm not allowed to attend.
