Yeah, the gallery here is awesome and I utilize it frequently. Definitely something I wish more sites had. B&C had a gallery too, but I recall it being stupid slow and kind of wonky.

I first found dakka years ago when the internet security at work blocked B & C.

At around the same time I started my first love again - Eldar.

I stayed here and now do not visit any other sites. This is because I don't have the time at work anymore and my curiosity re 40k is satisfied by Dakka.

I too remember the days of when it was the wild west here (or maybe just the end of it) and the flame wars could be funny at times however it did make you nervous about posting.

I much prefer it these days under Yakfaces guidance and would say that the mods do a good job of keeping the place one that I like to visit.

I also like the features here as well.

This thread has mostly been pretty good about not bashing other forums, but remember that we do have a policy against that here on Dakka. If you don't like another forum, just don't read it. There's really no call to badmouth other forums (and I'm sure that the people who do post there like it, no matter how much they may complain, just like the posters here on Dakka who gripe about Dakka but still seem to stick around...)

I hang around a few Warhammer threads on SA and people there are pretty damn cool.

I think dakka is the best of the sites on a technical level, by far. Between the wiki, the gallery, and just the extra features Lego has put in the forums, I don't think any other site can match it.

Some forums can get heated, but I think it's valuable to see what other people are saying about things. And there's less of the insipid "what's your favourite army" type threads here.

I must concur on the technical superiority of Dakka. I've signed up for many of the other boards and I can almost NEVER find what I'm looking for. So my visits are usually short and very frustrating. I'm sure there's good stuff buried in each one, but I don't have the time to hammer my way through their layers of questionable logic to try and find them. Within 15 minutes on dakka I'd pretty much sorted out everything about it's organization and function that I needed to access 90% of it's material. The fact that it's organized so well is a great tribute to the quality of it's administrators.

On the less technical side, I think dakka is home to some fine talents, both in gaming and modeling/painting. People are generous and supportive. There is a line to custom retailers for picking up odd bits or having things made. The mods have a gentle but firm hand, and I love the range of people who frequent the board... from young kids to old farts like me.

All-together a very fun and interesting place to hang out & learn.

In addition to this I would like to redirect everyones attention to the note at the bottom of my OP that states that this is not a thread for bashing other forums. If you've had bad experiences with another forum or simply don't like it then that is fine. But this isn't the place to post about it, please keep things civilised so this thread isn't closed as I've enjoyed reading everyones views of our site. Thank you

I visit this place and Librarium.

Librarium is a lot more individual army friendly. It has a seperate forum for every army, 40k and Fantasy, which makes it easier to find specific things you may be looking for. Here, it's all clumped up into one specific spot, and you'll have to dig through several pages to see whether or not something has been asked recently.

This place is a lot better about the news and rumors though. Pics of IoB where up here days before Librarium, so I like to visit this place to get things like that. Sometimes, the sheer bluntness of the members of this place is a little refreshing as well.

Dakka is my home. I find the posters to be more mature... sorta,in that they don't cry like a little bitch when you're honest with them, etc. What I don't like about Dakka is the seeming lack of... life. On warseer its like a steady stream of content, on dakka... its realistically paced... and I just cant handle that, what the hell am i supposed to do other than browse internet forums all day? I'm entirely serious, yeah, i should probably paint, but I hate it sooo much... yeah, I need a life.

Warseer used to be home, but then I got banhammered for calling someone a troll, go figure. I enjoyed it for its rumor content and its M,P,&T threads, as well as the laughs I got from some of the dumb arguments on there.

Prior to that it was 40ko, but I got fed up with the mod team on said site, and was ultimately banned because I disagreed politically (as in real world politics) with one mod in particular who was on one hell of a powertrip (so much so that it was evident after I was banned when he edited my avatar in a rather childish manner).

I started my trek through the online warhammer world with librarium online. It was a good site, but it was waaaay to small, and quality of rumors, projects, etc. was in general subpar compared to other sites. I still visit occasionally...

I occasionally browse heresy online, bolter and chainsword, WIP, Tau Online, and Coolminiornot but I rarely post on any of these. Usually I check these sites out for modelling/painting articles or army builds (mostly the former rather than the latter).

Also go on BOLS pretty regularly (for the rumors, so I don't have to bother with warseer). And outside of that, I'm active on theminiaturespage and spartan games forums to get my non-gw fix.

/tg/ does have some real gems in it and its one of the more sane boards. as long as you ask nicely you usually get a good reply plus it's good for things that don't really deserve it's own Dakka thread.

Dakka drew me though because it's not army centric and it retains a sense of restrained wildness.

Dakka is home, for me (I lurked for a solid year before I started posting, so I've experienced Dakka for a bit longer than it may appear). As for the drama that so many seem to love, it really depends on the day. Sometimes it's good for a laugh, sometimes I find it incredibly irritating, as it gets in the way of actual content.

Speaking of which, my biggest gripe with Dakka is the dilution of content that someone mentioned earlier. There are great painters, modelers, generals, list-builders, and some very creative fluff writers, but the inane debates that don't get shifted to PMs, the "me too!" posts entirely devoid of content, the massive amount of duplicate topics stemming from nondescript thread titles stymieing searches or users too lazy to bother even attempting a search... these all get in the way of the absolute gems that some people post. If half the users would withhold half of their posts, the average quality of content would shoot right up.

Part of the problem is that DakkaDakka resides in [cue dramatic music] the internet. Fear of reading long and/or numerous sentences, the inability to clearly convey ideas through text, and testicle-inflating anonymity are simply unavoidable realities, especially without something so extreme as a larger, full-time, salaried modquisition playing the role of uptight bouncer. Stricter guidelines on post "quality" and the rigid enforcement thereof would streamline things a lot, but it would also kill a decent bit of Dakka's charm and personality.

Other sites have their strengths, be it fast and reliable rumors, larger user base, more content, etc. but I haven't found any that do as much (especially since I'm 40K-centric) as well and with as much personality (for better and for worse) as Dakka, and none of them can match the technical guts (as well as bells, whistles, and several pairs of balls) churning in the background (don't forget the sexy black and gold theme - it's all Dakka and all sorts of sexy). So cheers to the Dakka team - they aren't perfect, but they're pretty damn good!

Dakka was the first place I went and it's well organized, every time I've asked a question it's been answered, and there's a lot of solid, useful debate that goes on.

Drama is always fun to read.

I do like Advanced Tau Tactica though. If you really want to hear excellent strategies for playing Tau, they are the #1 place to go.

I think that depends on how you determine that, and even then, maybe?

I think Warseer would still beat us out most times in the various metrics used to measure it.

A question best left for Legoburner.

Agreed, I'm a member there as well. Though it does seem like everyone is afraid to post there unless you're one of the site owners/moderators. But it's a good site for Tau players

Dakka has (for 3 of the last 4 months):
- the most posts per day
- the most new users per day
- the highest rank (on average) on Alexa
- the most US users

Warseer has
- the most posts archived
- the most UK users

Librarium online has:
- the most search engine hits (heavy SEO) but the highest bounce rate

GW official site has:
- the most overall traffic

coolminiornot ranks fairly highly, as does BoLS (not including their forums), and second sphere has had a strong start, but by most metrics we are generally the largest wargaming community website now.

The Orkimoticons, and the ease of use. I've signed up for several forums and none of them, repeat none of them were nearly as user friendly as Dakka is. Dakka is the only forum I've found that actually allows me to subscribe to threads in a simple manner, and see what I've subscribed to just as quickly. It's well laid out, simple to use, and has everything grouped in a sensible manner. My only gripe would be the search system being a bit clunky - but Lego's working on that IIRC.

I don't visit those other forums at all now (or very rarely), because it was a pain in the arse to work out how to do everything.

Or it was just me being lazy. Either way, 1-up for dakka.
