Oh my- I hadn't considered the shapeshifting space escorts Or "Quad S" angle. They would make the noise marines the happiest warrirs in the universe, but would also probably be totally unplayable.

The shapeshifters have to be one of the most scariest races in the 40k universe. One second you have a legion of armed space marines the next second they are killing you with alien weapons

No, not Eldar riding dragons...I mean dragons. Highly intelligent flying reptile like creatures that breath fire. D&D style Dragons. Normal troops similar to Dragonborn in D&D, larger ones simply huge dragons.

First of all, this would be hard to field in alot of games because chuck norris would be 2000 points by himself, and wouldn't fit into smaller games. In games large enough to accomodate him, he would break the game and alot of faces.

Secondly, I like the idea of sentiant shadows that exist partially on another plane (seperate from the warp)

Lastly, There is a race of lizard/fish men described in the fluff of the 4th edition rule book. They employ next level camoflauge, advanced weapons mounted onto "hands free" harnesses which allow them to fire at the same time they scuffle along walls and ceilings or whilst in hand to hand to tail combat. Anybody remeber what these were called?

The shape-shifters and fish people both sound like something from the tyranid codex.

Well, we have:

Superhumans with powered armor (Space Marines and their varients)
Regular humans with big guns (IG)
An ancient alien race that was ruled the galaxy but has now diminished (Eldar)
A purely war-happy race (Orks)
The religious fanatics (DH/WH)
Someone who has super-awesome technology but inexplicably can't use it to kick butt (Tau)
A purely evil race (Chaos+Daemons)
Space Pirates! (Dark Eldar)
People devoted to nothing but the destruction of the galaxy (Necron)
The hive-mind insect race (Nids)

I think the only "standard" sci-fi race we're missing are "The pleasure-people pacifists", "The god-like beings barely interested in us mortals" and "The society with incredibly harsh punishments/crazy laws our heroes have to peacefully work against to free the crew member that unintentionally committed a crime". None of those would work well in the grim-dark 40k universe.

Am I missing anything? I can't think of a sci-fi race that doesn't fit into the categories 40k already has covered. Maybe the "spy" race be it standard espionage or shapeshifting.

Another thought. Extra dimensional travellers. From another reality where they have taken over everything in their own version of our galaxy. And seek an alternate reality to conquer all over again.

If you replace "dimensional" with "galaxy" that fits the Tyrannids pretty perfectly.

Your thinking subjugation like the roman empire? Or the federation from star treks alternate reality?

Yeah, that could work. You'd have to be careful about their flavor, though.

If they get too "mirror universe", they'll just be Chaos.
If they get too "we love war", they'll just be Orks.
If they get too "appear out of nowhere and be all mysterious", they'll just be Dark Eldar.

But, if they can be that perfect balance of evil, sinister, battle-loving creature, I think you found some legitimate space to play with

Subjugation of course! And definitely Grakmar. Plus it would be a interesting way to add a new faction that chafes against the cultures already around in the 40k universe. As they'd be alien even to them.

right most of the votes seem to swift to shapeshifting

So ive decided for them to shapeshift into elements

Fire
Frost
Nature
Shadow

for a example transformation that i might change it

Fire:

Frost(one the left):

Nature:

Shadow:

things like that

last thing

Asherian Command said "A god like race would be cool. Like the Old ones"

i could make a god like race quite easy

they would be called

The Skylords

but the question is are they commanding them or against them

or i could just bring back the old ones as i have a summery of how they can come back

comments please

Wow, thats some great artwork!

Demiurg. Some kind of hi-tech dwarves in space analogue, but far removed from the cigar smoking and trike riding dwarves in space of old.
More like the epic version, but with more personal modification (like the Jes Goodwin sketches that came out when they were coming up with the concept for the Tau)

No you more or less have everything.

The only way of adding a new faction would be to look at the alignments we have at the moment in the game.
Lawful good: N/A
Good:N/A
Chaotic good: N/A
Lawful Neutral: Imperium, Tau
Neutral: N/A
Chaotic Neutral: Eldar
Lawful evil: Necron
Evil: Chaos, Dark Eldar
Chaotic evil: Orks, Nids

Not hard to see what is missing. Sadly people have it stuck in their minds that truely good factions and races have no place in 40ks grim dark universe. I would say yes for Lawful good and good, but chaotic good on the other had does have some place. Random example could be something like a non-Imperium human faction that has nothing to do with chaos. Since they are Human, the other races would hate them and link them with the Imperium. On the other hand, the Imperium would see them as traitors and not even worth their existance. In the end you would have a faction that tries to do the right thing morally, but are forced to do what they need to to survive since no one is really on their side. (Do not say that is what the Imperium is, killing things that are not human just for that reason is very far from good.)

I could fully see some kind of elemental creatures but like this you cant use basic elements cos of Tau.
Transforming sounds cool. Some kind of cystel thingys that can reform in a good form for CC or shooting or....

Hey hey hey, 'Nids and Orks aren't evil. 'Nids are just hungry and Orks are only looking for a good time. You trying to say you've never been out on the town having fun and stopped to get a dollar menu cheeseburger real quick? Well that's all they're doing it just happens to be on an intergalactic scale.

Some kind of lizardmen, ogre sized, and focused in CC and short ranged but quite destructive heavy weaponry. They could work as mercs and (unlike kroot) as an effective independent army.

I like the idea of having a god-like race, perhaps one with mind-control psychic powers. That way, all you need to buy is one model of it, the rest can be models from all the other races. Think Yuri from C&C, except each pseudo-god could control more than one unit or would have a control limit. Think about the variety in every army, not one would be alike. Think about the rampant chaos of mind-control!

Another race could be a zombie type one; every time they kill one of your own, it becomes one of theirs.

Yes. I can see lizard men working. Looking back at some ideas such as a gaurdian type race protecting the univerce, lizzies could fit into that kinda slt quite nicely. I dont know much WHfanticy fluff but dont lizzies have really good magic stuff. Swiching that to warp power stuff and they would make quite a nice little phycic swarmy race. That is inless Nids are baced on lizzies. they do look kinda similer. just nids are bigger.

i think my best bet is the Old Ones, i mean we know that they were a 'godly' type race. and that they were wiped out (supposably) but maybe before they were completely wiped out by necrons/enslavers they managed to contain the technology to cloak an entire planet by a "unknown race's technology" they lived for eons in peace and have no meaning of ever taking the universe again until the Death Dealers ( Chaos DIY chapter) and Frost Claws(Space marine DIY chapter) found the planet by fighting each other to the point were they ventured ino the unknown so they forced the Old Ones to awaken/defend themselves until a unknown tyranid fleet started to attack which they had to help each other, since they are so old you could do a hell of alot with them, and you could aso make them like an ally of the eldar since they did create them, and it would help the race out a bit, (they only had 1 planets worth of people and the eldar only have a few craftworlds left, their help would benefit each other greatly), also they are slowly fixing what hapened to the eldar.

Thing im in doubt/need help

do you think i should have a tyranid fleet? or

or a zombie race(like the wraith of star gate)?

or another god type race that are more powerfull?

maybe another fraction of the Old Ones?

comments please

p.s I am looking to put the Death Dealers as a ally of the old ones
