Personally speaking, my eyes are too big for my belly. I have too many armies, and too much to do, to the extent that I am seriously wondering if I will ever finish anything to my satisfaction. I have at a minimum 2500 points of every 40k army bar Imp Guard and Sisters as well as 3000 points of High Elves and Vampire Counts (courtesy of Mantic's excellent range). Of the 40k stuff, I also have multiples of the same army (eg I have 3 marine armies and 2 CSM ones). Pretty much all of it needs painting/repainting. The only army that is close to being what I would term finish, is my Death Guard army, and I still have a termie squad and 5 tanks to do yet. I really wish I could finish something before moving onto other stuff. My problem is logging onto ebay or Maelstrom and going 'ooh shinies' and before I know it I have another 3k points to be painted to add to the list. My recommendation OP would be to finish your army before moving onto anything else unless you have the time and the wallet to merit otherwise.

I've built (and painted) three armies for 5th edition (totalling over 12K points) with a four in progress. But I just like having something to work on. I've slowed down since starting the company.

Yea when looking at other armies, look at what you like and then how it plays. Choose what you like. Having different ways to play the same game is always a good thing.
Example, I started 40k by playing Tau. Then I picked up orks to play a CC army. This was followed (mostly by having all those AOBR boxes) making a CSM army so I could have something versatile.
I even picked up skaven a while back to dabble in fantasy.
Just find the stuff you want and roll with it.

Go at it with a plan. It was suggested to me once that a second army should be on the far end of the codex cycle from my main army; I recommend this to you as well even though codex creep appears to be a thing of the past. Playing somethign very different from what you have now is also a great idea. But plan it out otherwise you will end up spending a fortune on your army.

I have thought about starting an Eldar army but decided aginst it as my IG force is a never ending WIP (My Marine force is more for show instead of being competitive). Do what feels right on this one. If you have reached a point of no progress or fun, then it's time to try something new.

If I can suggest anything, it's to make sure you pick something you really want to see through to the end. I started with Tau but I've attempted to do a second army like 5-6 times already. CSM, SM (twice), Orks, Tyranids (twice), and now Dark Eldar.

If you are looking at the Forgeworld stuff, the answer is an unequvical... NO.
http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/Imperial_Guard/Death-Korps-of-Krieg?filter_reset=1
A better option may be to get a box or two of the guard guys, get a couple of those traitor guard conversion kits and put a couple of squads together, along with a converted renegade tank.
If you paint them up as a different chaos faction then your main one, you then have an alternative ( used as the second army), and/ or an option for use in your current army.
http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/Chaos/CHAOS_RENEGADES?filter_reset=1
Other options for you could easily be-
Get yourself a squad or two of your choice, then add in a command, then just add in the second or third squad, or vehicle and leave it at that.
The biggest issue as players is the shinies facotr, then you end up buying all sorts of stuff that you end up never painting, or even just sitting around half finished, then you are pretty much in the wish I had... phase.
I have at least one army of everything, so in effect, I'm speaking from experience. Some are better off then others, but in effect, I start my armies buying a squad, or platoon box, when they are available, painting them up, and then adding in a command and heavy weapon section or vehicle, and trying them on for size, so to speak. If they catch on, I get a couple more, or if not, They sit in the closet, or go to someone else needy for them more then I am.
Bottom line for you there, the game costs in money and in time, so choose carefully.
These armies are pretty much like a pouty faced, drama queen girlfriend- Always wanting more, and never satisified.
Good luck to you.

i totally know what you mean when you say that. I fell for chaos being the ultimate evil, but then it was short lived with the release of newer codexes. I was looking to start a second army aswell but i really don't want to "switch sides". What i then realized was to look at the codexs and see what really appeals to you and not just build cookie cutter lists that are supposed to be unstoppable. It has been a real problem for awhile, but i think that there might be a traitor guard army in my direction.(still haven't decided)
hope it helps

We love what we love. Reason does not enter into it. In many ways, unwise love is the truest love. Anyone can love a thing because. That's as easy as putting a penny in your pocket. But to love something despite. To know the flaws and love them too. That is rare and pure and perfect.

Noy unless everything for your first is painted and complete.
Otherwise it will never get done.
DKOK and reisn models arent that neat. They lose their "cool" factor just like all models.
Find a new facination in plastic. Its sturdier and easier on the wallet.

I'm almost done with my Orks and am begining the process of starting a Chaos Daemons army. When I first saw the DKK models I wanted to play them because they look so awesome (why I'm starting Daemons) but when I saw the prices I about had a heart attack. What makes me want to play an army is the models, then I look at the codex and determine from there. Your best bet is to play with some friends that will let you play "counts as" using your chaos models as proxies.

I would say it could be worth doing. But then I have 2000 points of space wolves and decided that I wanted to try some Eldar. got a couple of squads and the codex and that is as far as I have got. I still love my wolves and find things in that army i want to buy. I will get to my Eldar but there are two many possibilties. that said its nice to pick some eldar up and paint them when I get bored. I impuls buy the odd bit off eldar every now and again but have come to realise these is stuff I want for the wolves more. My eldar army is going to need a serious cash injection to become playable so its on the back burner. That said there is not much more I want for my woves so when they are done I will have a good head start on the eldar.
Once both armies are playable I imagine it will be good to chop and change between the two. Also slow down on the purchases and just enjoy what I have.
So yeah I would say go for it if only to have choises in the future.

I did CSM first when i returned to the hobby - nice 3.5 ed WE army, then a small Emp Child force. Then boom new book, updated the army, bit of trial and error and hit about 8K - then Daemons released, already had lots of khorne ones so did all khorne before a multi ethnic force.
The this year started Eldar, as of today it's over 3K all painted with about another months work left to finish off other bits - so yeah when ready enw armies are fun!

Hmm, I just don't find most of the GW mini's all that good. I go through the site and think "this looks silly, this is out of date, this looks ridiculous etc". Don't get me wrong, there are some nice mini's by GW.
DE look pretty good now but it took like 10 years to do! How many SM army where brought out or redone since then? I won't be collecting DE as I wouldnt want to wait another 10 years for an update.
Some of the new SM's to come out in 2010 are very good. But overall I think the majority need a major update. From what iv seen in 2010, GW are getting much better but there is still a lot of work to do (even their female mini's are starting to "look" like females).
I already mentioned I wouldnt collect another army. But it is mainly due to other company's making some awesome stuff. I tend to look at Reaper, Privateer Press and Avatars of War and just drop my jaw to awesomeness. Im already replacing various mini's with non GW models.
Also, instead of collecting another army, you could just improve your painting which would slow you down. Think of it as a "quality over quantity". I do this and it takes me ages to finish anything (but is a lot o fun). Then again, Im more into painting then gaming.
Overall, if you like the mini's and would love to paint them (and have the money and time) then go for it. If you're thinking about collecting another army just for the hell of it then see what other options you have available (different game, create some diorama's etc).

I think its totally worth it but then again i tend to be a little obsessive compulsive when it comes to collecting I pick up a figure here and there. Started with a boatload of AOBR orks then got some AOBR SM from a friends that I converted to chaos. Then some a couple of gaunts from ebay since i thought they would be fun to paint. I think the way to do it is to buy a box of troops every now and then and before you know it you will have your second army. I was going to do Death Corps since they look so awesome but being forgeworld I cant simply pop down and pick up a pack of dudes localy on a whim which thankfully has saved my limited gaming budget. But on the bright side I can finally play apocalypse with my friends this weekend.

I build armies around themes. I also love Space Marines, so I've got Space Wolves Mechanized, DoA Jump Packs, and I'm currently working on a Biker/Vulkan hybrid list. I want to do a Grey Knight list with plenty of Storm Ravens. After that, a full scout list, and full Terminator list. I'd also do some CSM if I liked the book better. (Really want to do a World Eaters army) So yeah, I think it's fun to have more than one army.

I learnt the hard way before, that it's just costly.
I've always had my Space Wolves, then bought a bunch of Orkz... Then Tyranids... Then Lizardmen...
I managed to sell the Orkz and Tyranids here to recoup some losses, but I learnt to stick to one army unless you can afford otherwise (I kept my Lizardmen so I can play Fantasy and 40k).

Let see now.
I have Space marines, Space Wolves, Eldar, Dark Eldar, Necrons (Necron Raider models and conversions), Tau, Daemons (mono god Slaansesh), Chaos Space Marines, and Orks.
I have small amounts of Tyranids and IG.
For WHFB I have Wood Elves, Tomb Kings, and Chaos.
If you go down this path of collecting, then go all of the way and have fun in the hobby. Just remember to spend so many dollars a month on your hobby.
In that way it helps with the sticker shock on how much money you have spend in a entire year.
