My favorite memory was when I got the Mordheim game for Christmas. It was just the coolest game ever.

Absolutely I still love Mordheim - still flick through the rulebook and paint up warbands, even though no-one plays it anymore :(

Looking for fun articles on painting, tactics and wargaming? Are you after a new regular blog to follow? Are you a bit bored with nothing better to do?

If the answer to any of the above is 'well, I guess' you could probably do worse than read my blog! Regular wargaming posts, painting and discussions

Everytime I get *too* sentimental about the prices of the old miniatures I take a step back and actually LOOK at the old models vs. the new ones.

I dunno, something like:

Compared to:

And then I think: 'yeah, that's probably worth 5 times the price of the first one (or whatever it was back then...its been so long).'

Cozy cockpit of an Archer ARC-5S

I remember..

- When I bought my first box of Imperial Space Marines, whom came in boxes of six plastic models, this was before the now famous Goodwin versions we have today. I miss those old bolters with no ejection ports and skeletal stocks.

- Buying my first ever White Dwarf at the local hobby store. Issue 220, featuring Tsagarad by Warwick Kinrade. His kitbashed and converted Imperial Guard army cemented my future into the hobby bigtime.

- When the Amsterdam store officially opened and they had a "Buy three boxed sets / blisters" and get the cheapest for free.

- When the Amsterdam store still had Swan and Andrew running about running things. Swan was an all-round nice guy who would toss in random blisters with big purchases and Andrew, oh how I miss that hyper-active red-shirt, he made instore battles anything but bland and quiet affair.

Talking about free miniatures on WD there was a special character released the same time as Mordheim; "Aenur, Sword of Twilight". Later on you could get him on their website for a suitably silly amount, but I don't think he's available any more.

Also around issues 200-220 they went mad for cardboard inserts. At first it was just the odd datafax for the vehicles, then they started putting in counters and things for special scenarios. Of course they really pushed the boat out and gave you a cardboard watchtower with the release of Gorkamorka, it was enormous, must have been about 12" high. later on they gave you the "Brewhouse Bash" game which was a map of a bar and various counters for your orks to have a bar room brawl and the chance to throw bottles and chairs at each other. Now they just can't be arsed.

It was the 2nd ed box(with 20 Marines, 20 Goffs, and 40 Gretchin plus the cardboard Dread).

Man, I miss Armorcast Titans and vehicles(I can remember my first game using my Revenant and Eldar vs my friends Guard and Orks; still looking for the 2 Khorne vehicles, too) and their Inquisitor Magazine. The issue with the Revenant rules had not one, but TWO full 2nd ed Squat army lists: Hold Guard and Forge Guard, IIRC.

I think all my nostalgia from 2nd stems more from the fact that GW was more experimental back then and they allowed Armorcast to be even MORE so: Inquisitor used to publish a lot of Datafaxes for OOP RT units like Guard Speeders and Epic units such as the Chimera variants.

I also remember 2nd edition Epic, I had just left school and was basically unemployed. I just remember one long summer of games between my friends in my parents greenhouse!!!

I had two squat cyclops, the overlord armoured airship, the landtrain and it was awesome.

I loved epic, I sold all my stuff to get my first car (A MG Metro lol)

Since I'm a newer player, I can't say much, but I miss the 4th Edition rules for Kill-Teams. That was some amazing gameplay - made you act out an actual story within the game, and really captured the feel of a small group of commandos infiltrating an enemy compound to complete an objective. Back when Battle Missions was announced, and it was discovered that Kill-Teams was coming back, my buddies and I dug up the old rules for them to play a few games. We were so disappointed with the new rules, they totally got rid of the feel of the old ones.

That said, it tended to be completely unbalanced at times - Tau especially got the short end of the stick. Every other race gets their basic Troop as a guard unit, and Tau get...Gun Drones. Whoop-de-doo. I remember one game, I tried to go Tau vs. Necrons (I believe it was a Kill Team of about 5 Necron Immortals). Even managing to get 3 Brutes at once at one point, I never managed to kill a single one by the end of it.

I remember when vehicles in 40K were awesome - where they acted like tanks, could take damage, lose crew and guns, could fire at different targets, when defensive weaponry was actually defensive weaponry.

Ah... how I miss 2nd Ed vehicles.

I don't miss separate datafaxes for every bike in the army. Ravenwing were a nightmare. But for 3rd edition they went too far the other way to simplify it; 'bikes' then only gave extra movement and +1T.

I think bikes should stay how they are for simplicity's sake, but the vehicle rules could be more complex. I'm really hoping 6th edition revamps vehicle damage to include things like damaged drives and killed crewmen - it still says how many people are crewing any given vehicle in the rules entries.

It won't. I mean, they even simplified vehicles further in 5th by reducing damage to a single chart. Do you think they're going to make it more complex or dumb it down further?

I can't think of how to dumb vehicles down much further. Besides, I'm saying hope here - it's all I can do for GW to get deeper vehicle rules.

I remember when you could shoot at your opponents when they moved... yeah! overwatch.

I remember when special characters were special.

I remember when hand to hand combat was similar to the old school kung fu movies where I struck everyone in combat. Hooray hero hammer!

I remember the days when there were no tyranids and there were the Zoats.

I remembered having to program my robots to fight

I remember when Eldar were only pirates and guardians.

I remember the Ork Musicians with electric guitars. I remember the Eldar musician with a harp.

I remember the times before the Ravenguard being a Legion.

I remember the Rainbow Warriors Chapter.

Mainly I remember when White Dwarf was a magazine you had to pick up monthly. In it, I remember when Andy Chambers had long hair. Adrian Wood contributed his personal stash of (ork) models to be used. Drew Will contributed tactics and other advice, Gav Thorpe wrote some fluff, Ian Pickstock did battle reports, and they took letters from readers/fans. I think they need to build excitement with the WD, not show what everyone online knows about 3 - 6 months prior to being printed.

When they used to put Necromunda/Epic scenarios in the WD so that you'd buy it.

When GW had specialist games that they pushed to get their customers to diversify with from Necromunda, Mordheim, Bloodbowl, Epic, Warmaster, etc.

Since its getting late, I also miss www.portent.net (now warseer or what ever its called now). At least DakkaDakka hasn't changed names even though its got new owners

I remember...

Buying the last RTB01 box from my local workshop, and then with the blissful ignorance that only an over enthusiastic 9 year old posseses, butchering them into 'chaos marines'.

Painting my first miniature, a first ed hobgoblin warboss my cousin gave me

Reading my first White Dwarf which featured the battle for Blood Keep between a Dwarf and Wood Elf alliance versus the Empire. The Empire lost (mainly because of the Reiksguards inability to climb over a hedge for most of the game!) but I thought they were the coolest army ever and still have my Empire army. If anyone has this issue of WD I will gladly sell my left testicle for it!

GW having a January sale where they sold off all of the miscasts or boxes with missing pieces for 50% off

Sending my mum off to buy me an Epic scale box Ork Horde and being dissapointed because the moodels were so tiny (I'd seen an ad for them in the back of WD and thought wow 400 odd figures for £5 what a bargain. I missed the bit where it said they were only 3mm tall!)

New miniature releases going into the cabinet in bare metal with a glossy varnish.

Yeah, there are some old timer minis that just don't cut it. I play with a friend who is obsessed with 80s minis, and while I will admit there are some gems, the rest I could take or leave. For me it's the Eldar stuff that gets me every time I go on Ebay, especially the Harlies.

I think he's referring to back in the day when an opponent had to agree to allow special characters in the games. Nowadays certain themed armies almost require a special character.

"Sometimes the only victory possible is to keep your opponent from winning." - The Emperor, from The Outcast Dead.
"Tell your gods we are coming for them, and that their realms will burn as ours did." -Thostos Bladestorm
