Just an idea for you, to get the 'heart'/'bloody rose' thing in there.
While painting their armor primarily black, wash it or highlight it or something with red. So it looks black, but you get little hints of the red in the right light, like blood soaking a black shirt.

Also, falling rose petals make for a very poignant look. Not sure how they would translate to miniatures though.

Not sure poignant is the way I want to go. Too emo given that they're already goths. They have lots of sharp stuff laying around but it isn't to cut themselves.

Small update. Scourges are nearly done, I've just got to get some splinter rifle blades for my last Haywire Blaster conversion and I'll be all set. The pictures below are garbage because I forgot my camera and took the shots with my iPod Touch.

This is a shot of my Haywire Blaster. It's made from the old version splinter cannon, Raider disintigrator cannon, blades from splinter rifle.

This is a shot of a completed Scourge.

This is a shot of my Scourge unit being assembled. Detached arms are going to remain detached until after painting so I can do the chest properly.

nice use of the old bits, I have a bunch of those too , so i think ill be using that idea ^_^ you could also put some magnets in them so they could be more use full too.

Hey Breot, how's your stuff going? I found this thread by chance (and I envy and pity you for the amount of plastic you've got to clean, if you're half as methodical as I am...) and I just realized you're going to be painting your Dark Eldar like I painted my first (and only one) so far! Dang, I thought I was the only one going for that...

Well, I'm rather curious to see how you're doing. Have you painted yours yet? If you want, I can try and show you how mine's looking so far.

Good luck!

I'm sorry about the delay in posting. I haven't forgotten or abandoned the project. In fact, I've got everything pretty much assembled and primered. I'll take pictures as I start work on painting them. Hopefully I'll be able to put something up tomorrow or Wednesday. Don't expect to be stunned and amazed by my painting because I'm not that good. I haven't painted a model in almost 10 years so I'm just hoping that I can make the army not look like a six-year-old kid did it.

I've divided my efforts into primary and secondary "waves" of units. All the stuff pictured in the boxes when I started is in the first wave and I plan to start work on painting them this week. I still have to get the wire done on the Scourges' bases so they'll look like they're hovering just above it. Hopefully I'll have that done in a week or two.

The "second wave" consists of a squad each of trueborn and bloodbrides, a bit-bash Baron Sathonyx model, my Archon (still gathering bits for him), and my "counts-as" talos which is actually a Wraithlord spiffed up in DE style. I've got five chaos hounds which I'll be adding 'nid claws to for more khymera conversions (can't have them all be dire wolves). Eventually I'll have to get another box of Hellians to convert to Beastmasters. I've no ETA planned on when I'll start these. With the lessons learned from doing the first batch, this shouldn't take quite as long. I hope.

So, as to the main question, "What's taking you so long?", it's a couple of things. First off, I'm slow. Second, I did some intricate work using plasticard to texture my bases. 3rd, I'm really really slow. Then there's the waiting for bits to arrive which slowed things down as I was building my Scourges. But, everything I started on is assembled at least.

Now for some pictures. It's a meager update, not anything special at this stage, but it will show where I'm at and what direction I'm going in.

First up are the bases. I'm using plasticard on the bases to give it an ruined urban look. First pic shows some examples and the second pic shows the color scheme. I'm using a sepiatone to contrast against my DE figures. I couldn't use the normal black or grey because my figures would reduce to silouettes. This will help black Kabalites stand out better on the table. Hopefully. The Kabalites don't have arms on them because they get in the way of the chest similar to how Tactical Marines' arms do and I figured I'd just finish assembly after painting so my life would be easer.

Next is a group shot of my army. Not the entire thing, just the stuff I've primered and am beginning to paint. I've also included a selection of closer shots of selected figures.

wow i really like the bases, they're like the ones i use for my Dark Angels but I use cork. Im havin' trouble finding a good looking base for my Dark Eldar, im doing the Dying sun kabal, Blue with red highlights and gold pads and stuff...any ideas?

Yeah I like those bases a lot. I also like the bike bases used for the jetbikes.

I'm using bike bases for bikes and termie bases for my Hellions. I did this mainly because the flying stands aren't flat and that would have made it nearly impossible to put the plasticard on properly.

Ahhhh that makes sense. As an added bonus, the bike/termie bases cling to hillsides better. I find the flying stands slip all over the place.

Part 2 of last week's update. I forgot my Cannon Power Shot and was limited to my iPod Touch. :( I'll bring my Cannon next time and get better pictures of my Baron Sathonyx conversion.

First up are the 30 Hellions. I say 30 Hellions but it appears than one of them has snuck off for a pint somewhere. Hmmmm... gonna have to track that sucker down.

Next up are the Scourges that I converted. Just 10 of them but given how expensive and involved these conversions are, I doubt I'll be doing any more.

And last, but not least, my Baron Sathonyx conversion. Consider this a teaser because I couldn't take a decent closeup with my iPod. I'll have more details and a better pic soon.

Okay, this took a little longer to post than I wanted to but here is my conversion of Baron Sathonyx.

Below are a few more shots of Baron and his Skyboard, showing off the detail a little better.

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2011/4/9/207497_md-Baron%20Sathonyx%27s%20Skyboard.JPG

Remember that rather silly Grotesque conversion back on the bottom of the first page? Well, it turns out that one of them actually came in useful. I couldn't find suitable windswept hair to save my life and I wasn't about to try greenstuff sculpting. I'm worse at that than painting. :( On the brighter side, I'm a wizard at carving up plastic and gluing it back together to make something entirely new and cool. I'm like 3M that way, "I don't make the model. I make the model better." Let's see how many of you understand that reference. It might be hard to see at the angle in the photo but there are extra blades on the skyboard. Sorry about that. Anyway, since it's common for people to ask for a parts list, here it is kit/model name first then and specific bit after the hyphen.

Hellion - Skyboard
Hellion - Legs, right leg bent
Hellion - male torso with straps
Hellion - right arm with open hand glued to separate standalone Hellglaive bit
Hellion - left chain arm, removed hand grabbing the chain and replaced with an amputated hand (trophy that used to be on a hook)
Raider - Splinter Pistol in fancy holster
Wych (or maybe Hellion?) - head, shaved down on back half hair bit would fit
DE Warriors (old-style) - female DE head (bride of frightenstein variant)
Empire - Empire General cape
Various - bits of chain, hooks, skulls, etc.

Anyways, I hope you enjoy. Let me know what you think.

Love the Baron conversion, the bases and the vast amount of beautiful Dark eldar models you're about to paint. Most certainly subscribed; I look forward to more.

Your baron conversion is sex on a skyboard. The only thing that bugs me about him is how large that holster looks on his hips.

Nice plog mate, digging it!

I thought about the wraithlord / talos jobby, before the current one came out. Basically the body was going to be laid front to the sky, as the current talos is, but I was going to model some kind of acid bath in it, so the talos could just pick 'em up and drop 'em in, to boil 'em down to goo. Maybe you could use this? To be fair, you could do the same with the current talos model, just add in some kind of acid bath...

Love the baron too, like it very much
