I'm doing a Mordian Iron Guard foot army. $50 for ten dudes. Even more for the special/heavy weapons.

Money isn't a factor, I've got plenty fo time to collect such an army.

Also, I think it's more when you are early 20's-mid 20's that it has the biggest effect, since before that you can get your parents to help finance, after that you'll (probably) have a steady enough job to finance a hobby, even one as expensive as this.

Currently working on a Praetorian IG army...so I feel you.
Luckily,I found a really great individual here on Dakka who was a huge help in aquiring a good bit of the minis I needed at a more than fair price...otherwise I may have scraped the whole project.
Biggest problem now is locating more infantry ....that isn't ridiculously over priced.

I can hardly say that it affects me after starting my 3rd forgeworld army...

Also, £45 [$73] but FW charge ~$140 per squad for 10 guys with upgrades xD. Certainly couldn't fund my FW armies if I lived in the US! (plus the absurd delivery charges abroad)

The cost of a unit never really affects my choices. Planning an army composed mostly of forgeworld marines. I've always been pretty good at being patient where money is concerned. That said, if something that I 'm intending to run is going cheap, then obviously, I'm going to buy that instead of a BNIB, provided it meets a few criteria.

I've never made sacrifices in order to buy something, and quite often if it's something that needs work, I don't tend to buy it - even if I have the money, until I have the tools I need to do a proper job in putting it together and getting it painted.

It's an exercise in patience, even on a low income. It isn't going to kill anyone to wait a couple of weeks to buy something - if you're in a sticky situation because you've got a tourney coming up, then I refer you to the statement above with the advice not to purchase anything (tourney ticket included) until you know you've either got, or can get everything you need.

I say this because the alternative is to leave yourself unexpectedly out of pocket. Noit really much fun, especially if you're travelling to say Throne of Skulls, or even worse you know that the utility bills haven't arrived yet and you haven't got any food in the cupboard!

This isn't meant to sound arrogant - although it may come across as such, but patience is a virtue!

I never thought of it when I started, and selected Nid's as my first 40k army. About a thousand dollars later I have 5ish thousand points of Nids.

Then I started a BA army....so few units for a build, so much cheaper by comparison.

Them I got into Demonhunters...even less units...
they became Grey Knights and I only had to buy 2 unit boxes to make them and army again.

Point is if I ever started another army, yes, price per unit as compared to total units to make the army would be a BIG factor, as in Imperieal Guard would not even be considered.

It's impacted to some extent - I don't have the bajillion rhinos I'd like for one CSM variant I want to try out, and the 54th Necromundan Hive Rats are currently mostly Cadians supplemented by a few Necromundans (though that's slowly changing).

It's the reason I didn't start with a Death Korps of Kreig army, even though the models are dead sexy.

It doesn't really affect me, as I am patient and either wait for a holiday (my significant other got me into 40k, so we tend to get each other 40k stuff for holidays, not to mention if it can be ordered online, a couple of my relatives jump at not having to go to a store) or wait until I have saved up enough money to get what I want.

I actually haven't bought anything in a long time because I've been wanting to get myself a new laptop (once again, very patient, I've been wanting one for over a year now) and then after that I want the Forgeworld Keeper of Secrets Model. Even though it doesn't even make any sense as all it's going to be is a "greater demon" because I play CSM, not Demons. But I've seen it painted so beautifully (and hope I can do the same) so I REALLY want it. Though, I guess money factors into the decision as if it weren't for needing money for a laptop, I would probably have the model already...

And it also prevents me from starting a Dark Eldar army, like I had originally intended, now that I can finally get models and a codex for it. [Though, the other reason is that I still haven't finished all the CSM models I already have, and it just wouldn't be right to give up on the models that I had wanted to make a masterpiece of just to play the army I was going to practice with.]

Yep, i really really really want 3 Valkyries, but i can't pay 186 bucks + tax, not on a Barnes & Nobles pay check, BUT, for the same price i can buy IG battle Forces, that 2 platoons with a heavy weapon team and a sentinel of your choice, so i'll take that over the Valkyries for a while.

I almost cried when I saw that mega nobs are $20 each. Then I figured out I could fashion some from nobz and battlewagon bitz.

Otherwise, not really. My list isn't too expensive, because I run a dakka kind of army, as opposed to, say, kan wall or BW brigade. I'm pretty patiant when it comes to purchasing my models.

I have to admit that I glue vehicle bitz onto infantry all the time. Ever faced a squad of 12 railgun equipped FW? No, I don't think you want to, either.

Cost is a factor for me, but to be honest , it's really painting time that makes me prefer (relatively speaking) low-cost/model count, high point value armies

On one hand yes as I am not running obliterators. cant justify spending 60 bucks on 3 dudes. Atleast with my 3 landraiders I was able to pick them up used for a decent price. Same with my 6 rhinos. Evently I will pick them up been saving my spare change. Hobby is expensiv but if you piece out your army it helps lower the burden start packing a lunch to work,walk/bike if possible.rent instead of buying vg or movies. I am not a tight wad but if I can shave costs on one thing I can lesson the blow when I want to by minis.

That is one of the main reasons I chose Tau. I hate painting FW and Kroot with a passion, but I love painting battlesuits, especially their armour/leg joints (I do a 70/30 mix of undercoat black+chainmail, very industrial looking). And I can fully paint a 6-man squad of XV25 in less than half an hour. Their just that easy to paint!

Try using terminator minis and coat on some green stuff. Make little cuts all over for the stretched tendons and stuff. Lighting claw + chainfist bits make for great oblit weapons, and combi weapons with spikes and green stuff all over them look great.

Cost has become much less of a factor for me in the past few years. On the other hand, I still have a ton of unpainted models from years past just sitting around and I'd rather try to tackle some of them before moving on and buying more.

Certainly used to. When I was but a lad I desperately coveted a SoB army but could never afford one. This all changed when I got a part-time job at a GW store whilst at Uni (never again). I binged like nobodies business on the Emperor's actual finest and now I have a lovely army of the ladies. Since then, well, it ought to more than it does.

Cost effected my decision at first look, I wanted SoB, but the cost was ridiculous. I looked around the GW site, decided i wanted the 'nids because MCs looked so cool, calculated the cost... was appalled... But the i looked into online purchases, found a place that give a 25% discount on the american price. I then spent a couple weeks bugging you DakkaDakkaians for input on 'nid lists made one that suited me competitive nature and full out bought it in one go (including the BRB and Codex)

Now I have a ton of painting to do on my 'investment' and i get to play and practice my list. I magnetized my MCs and it all seems very cost effective (funny coming from a Tyranid player eh?)

So yes cost did in fact affect my decisions, but patience and time spent on investigation will definitely help the fight against buyer remorse

Oh, buying bits and second hand off ebay helps too!
