I was wondering as I was looking through potential ways to build an army list whether some choices players make are influenced at all by the costs of some of the models. For example would you never run a TriLandraider list because you just couldn't either afford or justify the cost to yourself for buying these models? Or how about an army choice? I mean I would imagine one of the cheapest armies you can run is likely Orks. Yes the model count is high but a couple of boyz squads and Warbozz from the Black Reach set and you have a solid army core from the get go. Maybe some people play Orks for that reason.

In the end this is an expensive hobby and I wondered how much of that impacts on the game itself. What do you think? Does economics have any role in your play style/choices?

I'll tell you a secret, something they don't teach you in your temples. The gods envy us. They envy us because we are mortal, because every moment may be our last. Everything is more beautiful because we are doomed. You will never be lovlier than you are now and we will never be here again.

Oh, definetly. Hell, it affects my ARMY choices. I would play Skaven in WHFB, but building a Skaven army is EXPENSIVE.

Trilandraider is actually really inexpensive, when you actually look at the points per dollar.

Yes. As a low income young adult, I don't have a ton of money to spread around to my hobbies. I play IG, an a lot of my choices are based around not wanting to have to buy endless chimera chassis. Hence I've got swappable chimeras and leman russes to let me make better use of everything.

oh easily, by a drastic result, I mean I'm staying non-competitive because I simply can't afford raiders. If money wasn't an issue I would've been running nidzilla or even the dreaded landraider spam for grey knights.

I would love to do IG or Nidzilla, but both are quite pricey and slowly driving me for a cheaper solution.

I think it has an impact on the choices I include in my army, but doesnt impede my desire to start a specific army. I also think it is contingent on how you make your purchases. It might have a greater impact on someone who decides to start a new army and buys every unit needed for their army all at one time as opposed to someone like me who almost always begins with 2 troop entries and an HQ and doesnt buy additional units until I have completed and painted them. But if I want a land raider, and my army calls for the land raider, then I will buy the land raider.

Not really. Then again, Chaos isn't necessarily the most expensive to play.

In my experience, most competive 2000 point army lists cost somewhere from 500 to 800 dollars, mainly because of how many low points transports you need to buy.

Right now i only have a 2000 SW point army, and am thinking about getting a second army, and have considered doing IG, but most of the lists i would consider building are in the neighborhood of 700 dollars for all of the vendettas and chimeras needed to make the army competitive, and i am not sure if i want to make that sort of investment.

Ask me why I don't have my tallarn imperial guard list that would focus on three deathstrike missiles, sentinels, roughriders and infantry platoons. Go on. Hint: It's not because I have a problem with any of the models, or their effectiveness. I wonder what it could be then....

Impacts my entire army, I have yet to finish my current Army of wanderers due to the prices. SO I have to literally wait until I get enough money to buy them emassed in one order so I can save money through shipping.

I think it impacts certain lists, but for me no. I'm also at the stage in my life when I don't have to scrape together paychecks to pick up a new army.

I think the younger you are the more you are going to be affected by it.

It doesn't effect the models I play with. I will go get whatever I want for my army, since the hobby is about playing with the toys you want. It certainly effects the rate at which I buy those models. I'm building an almost exclusively Forge World army, and my purchases are far between each other. When I'm done though I'll have an army to really be proud of.

It definately does. I was trying to start a mech army but its to expensive to buy troops AND transports on top of that, which really made me go into a non-competetive foot army, yet it came out a lot cheaper.

It does, though not to a huge extent. I have spent approx. 600-700$ on my list. I am not comfortable going into 4 digits, but up until there: spamming XV88s w/ railguns.

Daemons are the biggest here. Fatecrusher with Plaguebearer troops and Screamers or Daemon princes for support. You'll be running head first into the reds. Even with the new plastic Bloodcrushers, they're still bloody (no pun intended) expensive.

yeah... I'd love a 10 strong unit of ogryns, but that would cost around 350AUD. So until I find some on ebay or they release a plastic ogryn kit, then no.

also searching the interwebsicle for cheaper places cough does help a bit.

Also, I was going to run 3x3 broadsides, but they're 40$ each so i am just going to get a team of two broadsides and outfit my XV8s (which are half the price) for AT.

Not only am I running Orks because black reach boyz are cheap as hell, but I'm also running 2 Looted wagons because A) they fit the Death Skulls/Loota Clan feel I like (Blue>Red), and B) I can use some of my cousins old toy Tanks.

Ogre Kingdoms Bulls. you get 6 for for 48 CAD (compared to the Ogryn's 1 for 26 CAD cost) and just add a few extra heavy bolters or Autocannons from Heavy Weapon teams and you should be set. If you can grab em on a discount (I managed to score 12 of them once on a clearance sale for less than 40 in total) they'll really make your wallet sing.

For IG, use non GW models.

For Tyranids, buy as much as possible second hand from eBay. Buy third party models for things like Mycetic Spores and Zoanthropes. Convert cheaper models into the expensive units -- Raveners are bloody expensive at £9 each but can be converted to replace the £12 Hive Guard.

You only need official GW models if you want to play in a GW shop or a GW sponsored competition.

IG are probly the easiest for third party, since you can just use old WW2 looking plastic army toys that are as cheap as dirt.

It's by no means dinky! I've heard of folks here who've dropped it and broke their foot. The thing's a heavy sucker. Granted, I use an old 2nd ed. Thudd Gun for mine

Yes. I tend to stay away from expensive big ticket items, and go for cheaper things like infantry or basic tanks and dredds (in the case of Orks) which I can get off of ebay for less.
