The ghost was brutally overpowered when released, I get the feeling they swung low on brand since they didn't have PAX exposure to look good for and didn't want the bad press of releasing two meta breaking champs in succession. And yet ever so many players still don't know what to do when paranoia drops. I played against a team with shen, nocturne, twisted fate, and pantheon. It was hell. Every fight escalated instantly every time. Well LoL decided that they are removing global ults and re-balancing hero's. Is that why they effectively gave one to nocturne? Yeah I dunno what they were thinking with that ult... Its just stupid. LoL devs say a lot of things then never do them. I suspect the are being exceedingly careful not to ruin the delicate and probably accidental balance thats made the game a colossal hit in the last year. They nixed the mac client, never implemented the graphics overhaul they were developing, effectively killed the magma chamber map they were developing, they probably aren't going to implement the tribunal system, etc. Just more champs and skins until sales start to wane.

Try pretty much all the heroes when they're on free rotation, do not buy any until you are sure you like them and they are off the weekly rotation. Do not buy any runes until you unlock the tier 3 ones at I think either level 20 or 30. Also play through the battle training or whatever they call it, it gives you bonus exp and IP up until level 10 if I remember correctly.
Basically the game doesn't really start properly until the late 20s, everything up to there is just training.

I usually play Renekton, built somewhat tanky with Frozen Hammer / Spirit Shroud and Sunfire Cape (plus some boots and DPS items).
I like Caitlyn, but in the late game she really sort of suffers once team fights pick up. She has no real CC (completely obvious traps don't really count), but I have found that combining the Clairvoyance summoner spell with her Ult can lead to some hilarious moments of sniping someone who thought they were safely hidden. Now for ranged I mostly run Miss Fortune, but ranged is one of those slots that I really don't feel like I have a "favorite" just yet.
Lately though, I've been playing support Kayle. Not sure why, but it's been a lot of fun and definitely different than the usual DPS character.

If you dont mind spending a little bit on the game, I would buy the developer pack at best buy or somehwere. It unlocks 20(or 30) campions right off the bat, gives you some bonus content, and riot points that you can use down the road to buy more stuff. It just gives a huge jump start in the beginning and its only 20$, although you get a 10$ riot point card with it... so its sort of $10 if you think about it. Also, save your IP points until you are 30 before you start buying stuff. You end up replacing all of your runes at 30 anyway, so anything you buy at lower levels just goes to waste.
I have been playing Lux quite a bit, she is a great long range support character. You can put out some great damage with her and she has good multi target CC (one AOE slow/damage and a double target snare) she also has one of the best (if not the best) shields for group battles, although it is sort of lacking outside of group fights due to it's low damage absorb rate. If you are good with skill shots, she can be a real beast and playing her repeatedly will improve your skills with other character's and timing of abilities (since she is the only character who only has skillshot abilities and nothing else). Her only downside is that she cant really focus fire a single target and you Must have tons of CD reduction to be effective. You forgot about Ezrael, who is entirely skill-shot based.
Yes, do not buy runes until level 20, and, arguably, don't buy Quints until level 30.

That is sort of how skillshots work, though. If an ezreal can reliably time his skillshots, and figure out his opponents movements before he even does them, then he can be successful.
I play Kog'Maw a ton, and I go AP stacking. I completely rely on my ability to time my LA's, and it works.
I haven't played Ezrael ever, but that is sort of how I see it work when I play with one.

I agree, Shuma, and that is sort of why I play AP Kogmaw.
I have played the regular Bio-Arcane/Bloodrazor build, and it is good, just not very fun after you play it a lot. Auto-attacking machine with some yummy void ooze slow.
But when you throw in the AP build with Kog'Maw, once you hit level 6, you win the lane basically. If you can time the LA's well like I can, then you start taking down towers and forcing your opponents to blue pill.
I do admit I'm not the greatest in team-fights compared to the Bio-Arcane build, though. Its basically void-ooze, spittle If I am close, and just try to pick off anyone that runs from the team fight.

Singed is a incredulous pro, no gonna lie..
I find that he's the ultimate chaser/ runner away.
If chasing, his ulti combined with his sticky glue and flip are invaluable. He can catch 9/10 people by slowing then throwing them over his shoulder easily. When running away his gas cloud is a great deterrent, especially when the damage is boosted by AP. People hate to stand in the gak, and will normally give up after they've realised that they're actually taking a fair bit of damage. In normal fights...ah I'm not entirely sold. He can mess about with people quite well, but he's not entirely useful, compared to Alistar or Malphite, true masters of disrupting the crowds.

Personally I prefer HoN (Heroes of Newerth) the problem I had with LoL was that you have to pay or play a lot in order to get heroes and most of the game content.
Having said that I did play quite a few games of LoL and I got really crappy teams and never knew what hero to save up for after reading this I may give it another try, I was worried about spending my points on a crappy hero.

Ugh, Yogscast.
You get the same problems you get in every multiplayer game which sets you up with teams. Sometimes you are with good peopl, sometimes not. And the hero rotation ensures you can try out the hero you want before you buy it.

There is no bad heroes, but each one has it's own strengths and weaknesses. The best hero is the one that fits the role your team needs most.
