Very cool conversion. I've seen some of those bits used in Sliscus conversions before but yours has some cool original elements.

Loving the DE blogs on the site these days!

The hydra gauntlet on one hand looks great paired with a sword. It looks like you could block with it and the prongs look like it could be used as a sword breaker or to disarm.

Wow, I just geeked out.

Thanks for all the input guys. I have no qualms about stealing ideas from others. Like the capes for the trueborn and the serpent standard for Slisky Whiskers (Sliscus) But as long as they are not carbon copies of other peoples ideas I am satisfied. Which is why I chose to do the helmets with hair for sliscus trueborn rather than the cool Reaver helmets as others have used. And Silky Whiskers(better?) has the poison pipeline, and I haven't seen his head used before.

I didnt quite finish the sliscus trueborn over the weekend. But their capes are finished as well as the armor and eyes. Now I just need to color the loincloths, touch up the body suit, highlight the hair, and detail the guns.

Thanks!

I promise more stuff this week. I was going to finish the trueborn last night but passed out after work. So I will finish them tonight. But later I need to decide between actually finishing Slisky Whiskers, or doing more troops or transports.

So I had a family reunion last week. grandparents 60th wedding aniversary. Great reuniting with my large extended family. Bad for painting progress. Anyway, I wanted to put up Sliscus as I have some need for suggestions.

What to do for?
-sword hilt
-banner serpent

Also have a good idea of how im going to do venom. Hot glue and purple ink. I don't have green ink, so i'm going to have to figure something out for the green sword.

Serpent should be the same purple and green as the venom... I'm thinking that purple base with green accent / spines etc would look da baws

I think he meant a purple base coat for the serpent on sliscus with green accents on the spines. Those are pretty cool bases that you found though

Wow.
Those are nice.

Verrrry nice.

Myself, I'm using these for my DE army:
http://www.dragonforge.com/Painting%20service/for%20sale/base_sets/sci-fi/Lost%20Empires%20Series.htm

I'm using 25 mm for al the foot troops, the 30mm for everything on a small flying base and the 60mm for Raiders & Venoms (60mm 1 & 3).
My 3 Ravagers are on the Yin Yang bases (60 mm Set 2).

I just need to pick up a pair of the oval ones for my Razorwings, now.

Those are some really cool bases. And they definitely have that alien temple feel that I like. Some of the runes however are a little too Eldar for my taste. That Hero base is way cool though.

Really jealous of your vehicles, the weathering/spatter looks great!

My main attraction in this blog:
The trueborn squad are coming along AWESOME! The modelling is great, those shard carbines look pretty damn Smexy, as does the unified 'topknot' theme you have. They even look more heavily armoured than warriors somehow, hard to explain lol.

The only thing i am not sold on is Sliscus, he is well converted with some ingenious 'Sprue Fu' for sure but possibly a bit busy? I will reserve judgement till painting is complete.

It is worth noting though that with all the Lokhir Sliscus' my mind has been closed to new intepretations of the character.

This means a lot coming from such a talented painter as yourself!

I think its time for my full disclosure. My experience in painting and modeling minis is pretty limited. My last painted army was an old one eye. a squad of 3 Tyranid warriors and 6 fully painted gaunts. As for my modeling skills. I half attempted a winged tyrant. Metal pieces prevented me from ever getting even close. (Why I ended up deciding not to convert a Lokhir)

So when it came to my first real committed conversion, I will be the first to admit that i went a little... overboard? I think the busyness definitely comes from the way the bits sprawl out both vertically and horizontally.

A few things go into why I put so much into him. The first thing is that he had too much in common with his Trueborn. Same armor, same cape, smaller head. He really needed to stand out. I think it woulda been easy to loose him in a sea of bone a green.

And that is why a mini such as this, when not in a closeup portrait by himself looks like a lot is going on. And your eyes have a little too much to digest. But when holding it in your hand, or seeing it sitting on terrain, or setting him amongst the other painted troops, it is easier to step back and take in key elements without bombarding your eyes with color.

Being that your comment here is also my concern. I am worried about making the Serpent Standard too flashy. I would prefer it to be understated and not draw the eye to it too quickly. I want your eyes to go Face->Swords->Poison Tubes->Serpent Standard. This idea makes me think twice about doing flashy colors like green and purple.

Please forgive me if I sound too defensive. I take all comments to heart and mind. And I am always looking for a way to come to the best final result. Let me know if you have ideas for making the Serpent Standard not pop too much while still looking detailed.

Didnt sound overly defensive at all mate! An in depth explanation of the modelling choices is all it was.

It is also worth saying that the whole Lokhir thing has been done to death. Just as i would, you modelled something unique.

LOL
You just stated WHY I bought them. I'm envisioning my army as having recently plundered some Eldar. : )
That makes their ruined appearance perfect.

The Hero base really is nice. I was impressed with it online and I just started painting it on Wednesday. It's more impressive in person.
Clarification: the hero base set comes with 2 bases... The 25mm base is nice, but I'm referring to the 40mm base.

I look forward to seeing your progress!

Yep, correct

Fair play to ya buddy, I only suggested these as they tied in with the colour of the tubes to the swords. Could have been that the serpent were alive, just in suspended animation whilst skewered on his backpack, and that serpent is what feeds the swords with venom. Plus I don't think you want too many different colours on board, otherwise there's just too much going on, but I'm not exactly a skilled painter, so my thoughts could do with drowning in salt from time to time

What colours were you thinking, or would you feel more comfortable with? To be fair, anything will work and can be passed off as venom in a universe where aliens have black, green, red and purple blood I guess!

hehe sorry kitch, didn't mean to kick your idea to the curb. I really was second guessing my interpretation of your idea. I will still be going with green and purple. But the green for the body of the snake will be really dark green, highlighting the spines with a catachan green. i might still keep the space between the spines a bright purple. You are right any other colors are going to make him to much of a rainbow dude.

Righto. So I know was talking about a little too much going on on the conversion. Well I told myself I was going to put venom dripping off the blade. So in the words of Freddie Mercury, "Don't Stop me now" (i've been listening to that song while I paint, and its easy to go over the top in that kinda minset)

I entertained the idea of venom coming from the serpent. didn't turn out so great.

@Yggdrasil, I also really like your work, so the kind words mean a lot.

I have begun to work on things that are not on my list because after 20 wyches and 3 raiders, and mainly just more troops being available I decided to start working on other cool elements of the DE range. As I said before, I have never really done conversions prior to my Sliscus so I enjoyed the experience. I decided to convert my baron Sathonyx, mainly using GS.

Here is some fluff to explain the expansion of my collection.
Spoiler:
The countless decades of realspace raiding has left Duke Sliscus drained and weary. The screams and cries of his fallen prey slate his thirst. But the experiences pale in comparison to the horrors one can find in any dark alley in Commorragh, let alone the thrill of the arena, the insidious concoctions of the covens, and the pure euphoria of absolute political domination.

The Duke's reputation in Commorraghha has grown substantially because of his realspace success. Kabalites off all alliances have grown disenchanted with the waning strength of their kabals. Even Vect's Kabal is not immune to the growing restlessness.

Seeing an opportunity, the merciless Baron Sathonyx arranges a meeting with Sliscus, to discuss a possible return Commorragh. Sliscus asks, "I command the most ruthless Cult ever in existence, why should I want to return to Commorragh?"

"Simple," said Sathonyx, "To finish what you have started."

So here is the Baron Sathonyx I have been working on. I GSed some hair, a cape, and a shoulder pad. And I used some reaver bits to extend the skyboard to make it "custom"

Here is before the custom skyboard (and better lighting)

Here is with the front extensions(poor lighting)

@ Da Piper Thanks! The thorns on the raiders are freehand. I at first considered using a stencil. But my airbrush is crap. Basically just two colors. The thorn is drawn with a chaos black, and then down the middle a line of chaos black fortress grey mix to make it look like it has some dimension.
