Awesome work. I dipped my steel legion army using similar methods to yours and surprisingly the dip works wonders. You just have to fling the hell out em and touch up globs. Oh yeah and matte varnish is magical. I see you used it on these.

I am on the fence about dipped army's, but you have done a great job painting and detailing your skaven. Love the color and illumination effect of the green, nice work!

Thanks for the compliments folks!

Here's a few updates:

My warlock engineer from the IoB set. This one is standard, but the next one is a conversion and will feature a doomrocket conversion as a backpack!

And the first conversion of the army is also a fact. Minor conversion work, but quite essential to larger games: the battle standard bearer. The standard itself came from the doomwheel and the base is made up of greenstuff. This means he can actually stand inside a regiment! Also, it really does make him nice and visible. I tried tying him in with the screaming bell stone-work...

Enjoy!

PS: I opted for the black background on these shots to see how it would affect the white balance... Lemme know what you prefer: black or white background!

Army looks fantastic. I love the OSL - great idea to use airbrush :

My only criticism would be red bricks on the bases. In my opinion they are distracting and don't mix well with sand/static grass mix - i mean there is no sense to that - either it is some kind "wilderness" (sand/static grass - but where are the bricks from?) or it is some kind of brick pavement but then there is way too much grass/sand. But this is just detail.
Overall one of best skaven armies I have seen
As I am getting ready to paint my 150+ rats it is great inspiration and a proof that it CAN be done and it does not have to take years to finish ;-) I'll try your recipy given earlier but with different color for clothes and different rust effect.

Respect, superb army, superb application of simple and effective techniques.

One of the most impressive armies (and probably fastest done) I know. One of my aquaintances, a former WHFB ETCplayer for Germany, does all his armies like that, airbrush, wash, done. All of it looks stunning, all of it is easy as gak and fast.

I love that, simplest techniques used to best effect - that's what a true paintmaster looks like. It's not about finding the best colours, finding the best tutorials, or anything. There's no such thing as academical paintskill - only what you do with what you have.

Kudos good sir, I bow my head - humbled.

I don't want to be human! I want to see gamma rays! I want to hear X-rays! And I want to - I want to smell dark matter! Do you see the absurdity of what I am? I can't even express these things properly because I have to conceptualize complex ideas in this stupid limiting spoken language! But I know I want to reach out with something other than these prehensile paws! And feel the wind of a supernova flowing over me! And I can know much more! I can experience so much more. But I'm trapped in this absurd body!

Hey folks

Small update on this project. It's not exactly the latest thing I have been doing, but I never really got around to take any pictures of it... mainly because it's a bit of a "dull" update.

It'll be part of my skavenslave units. I bought a few boxes of gnoblars a while back, to flesh out my slaves. I wasn't going to buy 300+ clanrats just to get 150 slaves (the way GW advertises them), so these will have to be the next best thing. I will add extra skaven models in this unit (as soon as maelstrom gets around to actually shipping my order...)

But I took a few shots of the first 12 of them. This is a really speedy paintjob btw, so no stellar work (no fancy OSL for lowly slaves!):

Oh, and there are these pics from my table blog as well, that mesh in with this army:

I know I already showed these before, but they do deserve a spot in my skaven blog as well, mainly because the terrain will be made for their "home-town advantage"

Enjoy!

I assume, by dipping, you don't mean just undercoating them, getting a pot of paint, and then actually dunking the models in to paint them...

Those are aboslutely awesome. I might have to get a spraygun/airbrush. Is the GW one any good?

1.) Dipping is a method of quickly painting many miniatures. They are primed, and then the base colors are picked out. After dried, they are dipped into colored floor polish (either Minwax Polyshades, or rebadged, price-embiggened equivalents), which has the effect of nicely shading the miniature, quickly. As a side bonus, it gets a rock-solid protective finish. The dip is usually glossy, which can be kept as is, if desired, or sprayed with Dullcote to dull the shine.

2.) The GW Spray Gun is not an airbrush - not advertised, implied, or described as one by Games Workshop. It's made for quickly basecoating miniatures. There are 2 major problems with this. First, it runs off of CO2, which starts expensive and snowballs from there. Using an air compressor will pay for itself very quickly if the alternative is CO2 cans. The other problem is that, at $30, you're within spitting distance of getting an actual, low-end airbrush. An actual airbrush can do all of the functions of a spray gun for miniatures, with the added bonus of being an airbrush and hence capable of doing all kinds of neat stuff that airbrushes can do and that spray guns cannot. So far as the GWS spray gun itself, there seems to be a fair consensus of people on dakka who have purchased this and spoken up in previous threads regarding this that the GWS spray gun is crap in materials and flimsy in build quality. You can start out in actual airbrushing for as little as $80 if you go to Harbor Freight, which is my recommendation.

May sound like a NooB question but what is dipping? is it just dipping into a pit of wash or something?

Incredible stuff! I would have never guessed they were dipped (although they technically weren't "dipped"). I think this a great example for beginners how just a little bit more effort can take their armies up a huge notch. Thanks for taking the time to share this!

Dipping is a technique that Ouze described well here. It's a speedpaint technique that only requires you to paint basic colours onto your miniature (after priming ofcourse). It's indeed a coloured woodstain floorpolish equivalant. Armypainter sells them, but you can find the original floorpolish at many DIY stores. This army in particular was done with armypainter's strong tone quickshade. It's a really quick, easy and beginner friendly method of painting your army to a relatively good standard. And, like Ouze already pointed out, the paintwork itself is virtually bombproof because of the hard finish that the quickshade leaves. Ideal for gaming!

I also have a little update for these guys. They won't be getting reïnforcements, but their hometown terrain did grow!

It's 2 craters made by warpstone meteors. I'm also making a board that has a strong skaven theme to it, painted with similar techniques as the skaven army itself.

So the warpstone infested terrain is starting to grow in size! These were completely scratchbuild however, unlike the trees. The craters were bases around some polystereen core, covered in brick morter and some pebbles were added for more randomness. The warpstone chunks are cut from compressed polystereen and covered in 2 coats of PVA mixed with dark angels green... to get that cleaner, glossy finish (as opposed to the grainy surface of cut polystereen).

Hope you like it!

I'll provide links to the products where I bought them. You may be able to find cheaper stores or webshops though if you are lucky:

€89 euro for the pop-up tent: link: http://www.fotokonijnenberg.nl/product/16620/interfit-pop-up-tent-90-x-90-cm.html

€155 for the 2 lightstands as a set. link: http://www.fotokonijnenberg.nl/product/1413068/interfit-ez-lite-kit.html

Both from Interfit, wich is a very budget friendly brand for basic studio photography.

And a cheapo tripod of €15 or something. Cannot remember where I bought that one. Any tripod should do though. You don't need the expensive, rugged ones for this kind of indoor camera work.

Time for another small update.

I finished my first warpfire thrower. It's been painted with pretty heavy front OSL as if it were shooting a burst of flames.

I have another update: The first of the skavenslave blocks has been finished. I finally got around to purchasing some steel wire yesterday, wich allowed me to finish the "overseers" in this unit. They have the ghettowhips (and it's an excuse to use armoured clanrats in the slaveblocks to flesh them out a bit).

And a wip of a slight conversion I have been working on: a warlock engineer to carry around the doomrocket.

Should be kind of fun to paint this one up.

Enjoy!
