Im new to the hobby so my order of purchases was 2000 points of marines first, then paint, then learn how to play, then make crap table to now think hard about a good table and terrain. I have an entire spare bedroom to put a 6 x 4 table just need to decide on type, swamp, snow, desert, trenches, mountains....etc

Also what store are you getting a table for 30$ btw link please?

I may be wrong here but it looks like the robogear terrain. Relatively easy to put together sometimes.

I just go to home depot or lowes and get a simple folding table to two, then get two sheets of 3 by 2 flat board and boom, table. That's around $40, since I wasn't adding in the cost of the board.

I recommend doing a bit of scavenging. All you need for a table is a piece of hardboard or plywood that you can either put over your dinner table or lay on a couple of saw horses. You can get the wood for 30 bucks.

My table is just 4 closet door sections that I got when we got rid of some closet doors.

Thanks Jimmi,
It's Rustoleum "Multicolor Textured" spraypaint. The color is called Rustic Umber. I'm not sure what it would be called in the UK, but it's a starting point.

I think one important element of the board really is the thick white housepaint undercoat though. A well as filling in the grain on the cheap closet doors the lighter underlayer makes the mottled, uneven effect of the texure spray more noticible and that makes the board look much less uniform and more natural. I think I used 2 or 3 cans of paint. I just sprayed it on layer after layer until it looked right to me.

In addition to the table and the terrain bases (like the ones around the buildings) I also use the same spray paint for to give a very light dusting over terrain with rocks and cliffs. Not for the color (A really light dusting won't show up much) but because it adds a nice bit of texture that makes drybrushing really "pop".

Robogear Hexagon clip together terrain.
Available in the USA through Pegasus hobbies and the warstore.
Reasonably priced, modular and techy-looking.
Doesn't have to be glued but does benefit from it (regular plastic cements for models work).

Mine are glued together for extra strength (but the bridging section between the two pieces are not).
There's another piece to the immediate right of them - it was 3 sets on the backline, then the related Syberclicks stuff up the right edge.
There was a sale on them so I grabbed half a dozen mixed sets.

Unpleasantly wet here atm, and it is in storage, so even if I wanted to paint it, I can't. It should be getting at least a black and metallic spray job and some pavement markings done before January.

What Terraclips set is that? Is it as easy to set up as advertised and is it good value for the money?

The base board is a 3 x 3 square of card board, with cork floor tiles glued on top. I then added tiles from World Works Games Himmelveil streets.

The Terraclips buildings are just sitting on top. They are the streets set, which uses the same design as the Himmelveil streets.

I like the clips a lot, however there is only enough in one set to make a 2 x 2 playing area if you want it multi leveled.

And yes we hire the viewing gallery of a gym for our gaming club.

This is my WIP modular city board.

Its just a sheet of peg board cut in six parts, it can be flipped around to change the lay out. I'm working on different buildings right now that will add some height and variety to the structures

The cool thing about my city tiles is that they fit on my desert board.

This was made for around 35 bucks, the desert is actually sticky tiles bought from a Lowe's. I have a bunch of different pipes/stones/large foam pieces that fit this board's theme. The two metal cabinets in the background store all my terrain making supplies and the terrain itself.

1/6th of my gaming table - not quite finished

Partially constructed another 2 sections, but no paint or sand.

I also have a large number of terrain pucks to put down on the more "plain" blank sections of board.

Many thanks

And I used styrofoam insulation boards (as it was considerably cheaper than anything else I could have bought ).

If I had the chance to do it over again I would not have been such a cheap ass and would have probably gone for pink/blue insulation foam as it is a lot harder duty and generally more useful (and nowhere near as god damn messy to cut/trim/etc ).

Yeah I used styrofoam for my lava board as well. I couldn't find the insulation stuff anywhere where live. It was a bit of a mess, but it worked fine and it's been holding out. If I make another I'll have to look harder for the insulation foam stuff though.
