Let me premise this by saying I have no played MW3 so I cannot speak directly to the quality of the game

In addition, most have played previous cod games, MW1, MW2, Black Ops, ect. and still bought the game, thus supporting the cod series. Even if the game has many similarities to MW2 the chance to play with new maps and equipment intices many and wont deter fans from continuing to support the cod series. Sorry BF3, ya couldn't beat the most popular series yet to hit the gamer world!
First: Sales does not equate to a good game. I'm fairly certain Activision could literally take a dump in a case, put Call of Duty on the outside and sell 5 million copies.
Second: 6.5 million copies is not "just under 10 million".
Third: CoD is nowhere close to the best selling series every to hit the gamer world. The Mario series has somewhere around 260 million copies sold, Pokemon has 210, and Tetris is around 175 million without counting mobile downloads to name a few more popular.
Fourth: Pointing out that Activision cannot handle the user load on a hyped item like Elite doesn't really help your case.
Finally: The point most people are making is that MW3 feels little better than an expansion pack for MW2.

This post proves only that hoards and hoards of people love mindless games with constant action and explosions, no matter how similar it is to that before it and how many times it's been done. It's exactly why so many simple action movies with nonstop action still do well at the box office. I'm not ripping on COD for this, it is great fun, but when I'm paying 60 dollars for a game, there needs to be a little more innovation.
And no need to rip on BF3, this thread is about COD is it not?

Oh I can wholeheartedly agree with the fact that game companies are in a progressive campaign to find ways to make gamers pay more for less product...but the game still took some work to complete, its still dazzling and intense...it still has some quality, so there's no need to knock it just because it has a high price tag...
do the smart thing and rent it from gamefly or blockbuster...you end up paying about a quarter of the money for about the same amount of average actual play time...

I'm not knocking it for having a high price tag, that's just as much as I pay for any game. I judge games for their worth at that price tag though. Some games I do believe are truly worth the 60 bucks to own it though- like MW2, which I clocked a week or ten days into. MW3, I can't see myself coming back to, and therefore I criticize it for not really being worth buying.
I did rent it, I hit level 29 in the multiplayer.

With regards the OP, I have to say, it is disappointing to see the same attitudes prevalent now as was the case 20 years ago. I remember the gaming scene as it was, being split over Nintendo or Master System and the vitriol and rhetoric that was spewed then was pretty pointless. It seems the gaming industry, despite moving more into the mainstream, still hasn't gotten over these petty' mine is better than yours' arguments. I haven't played BF3 but I would think it would be a fair assumption to declare it must be a fairly good game given the numbers of people buying it, likewise the Modern Warfare series. Calling someone 'stupid' for buying one or the other is pretty pathetic really. They are both good games on their own merits; if they weren't, people wouldn't keep buying them. I quite enjoy the MW series - I like the campaign, I like the story. Yes, it is a laughably thin plot but that is missing the point - it's the gaming equivalent of watching an action movie; good wholesome, brainless fun. Also, I must be one of the few people who *doesn't* play multiplayer. I have no desire to be screamed at by an American tween over a headset. I play MW solely for the story - I like the characterisation and I wanted to finish the story off and see where they took it. I have to say, I wasn't disappointed. Those people signing up and logging onto Metacritic and giving the game 0 scores just because they don't like the series is fairly pathetic really.

I will agree with filbert, It seems that we have been not comparing, but arguing over which game is better. I think it is fair to say that BF3 does have very good motions (showing the soilder jump over obsticals. MW3 does not. The graphics for mw3 are better on my tv then the bf3 Graphics. I do enjoy the multiplayer, but was more after the campain and the hoard mode. For of those who prefer bf3 over mw3 Are all entitled to their own opinions. One may like bf3 better because of its foces on online play, But others may like mw3 because of its range of abilitys in game modes. (Campain, Multiplayer, Hoard Mode, and spec ops Missions). I think it is fair to say that bf3 is a good game, but for my interests in video games, the Modern Warfare seires is my kind of game.

Saints Row the Third is keeping us occupied. I couldn't care less about MW3 after the disappointment I had with MW2. It doesn't help that the PC version is €10,-- more expensive than other triple A PC titles.

One thing is certain, Activision might regret releasing at the same time as Skyrim, on PC at least. The number of players playing Skyrim is 2x the number of players playing MW3 solo and multiplayer. I know MW3 is more of a console product, but Skyrim is also available on both consoles (granted it's not reallyaimed at the same demographic).
It's a shame BF3 is not on Steam to have their numbers as well.
For me the CoD series has been a succession of popcorn solo play and no interest in the multiplayer. Way too expensive qs such. I own none of them.

The thing I remember most (read: At all, as I was only a wee bairn) was an old magazine back cover which had a well drawn picture of Sonic and Mario duking it out on a black background. One of them was just landing a punch on the others nose and blood was spraying from it. I can't remember who punched who though...

I really enjoy the CoD series, except for the constant weapons errors (especially in Black Ops). I'm sorry, but you WILL NOT SEE Russian troops using a French or Austrain assault rifles. Or a flippin AK-47. I'm sorry, the AK-74 has been the mainstay of the Russian troops since what, 1978? C'mon, get up to date.
That's really the only "one up" I'll give to BF3; the weapon options ACTUALLY MAKE SENSE. Other than that, they're two different games with two different play styles...and I will forever love them (and their silly stories)

Nope. AK-74M is the standard assault rifle for the Russia, and has been since 1991. The AK-74 and AKS-74 became the standard when the Soviets invaded Afganistan...the AKS-74U came out shortly afterwards since they needed a carbine. I'm pretty sure the only people that use the AK-47 standard is the border patrol.

Referring to how many copies are sold within the first 24 hours literally shows nothing about the quality of the game though, because 90% of the people who buy the game that soon had decided to buy the game before it came out, meaning they weren't basing their opinion of renting it or playing it at a friends house or anything. They were just buying it because they love the series. I think long-term sales say a lot more about a game than it's sales after the first 24 hours, because if a game is still selling months from the release then it means that the people who were skeptical were eventually won over.

It is like MW 2.5, but NOT like black ops. I don't know, there was just something missing in black ops. MW3 Is like a balanced MW2(well more balanced) with a few shoe shines. IMHO it is a good game, and deserves a 7-8. Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh and not to mention. I HATED Mw2 And black ops. As in spi t on the multiplayer, but Mw2 Story was decent

I'll be honest, it is a really fun game. But out of personal preference, I'm tired of the same ol same ol COD action, so I was hoping they would have innovated it and changed it more. They did refine it quite a bit, but they didn't add enough to win me over. I also think the sound is horrible when compared to BF3, but that's just me.

Yeah, this is what really annoyed me about CoD. Like in Black Ops, getting a FAMAS nearly 10 years before it was even invented.
BF3, however, the weapons seem entirely accurate for the nations involved, and the time.
Plus it has the USAS-12, which is always hilarious

Cool, We are now geting into the specs of the game! As for me and my brother, we have all the stares for spec ops in MW2, We got board of multiplayer after 2 years and played just that instead. As for the famas, I dont really know when it was invented, but I will take your word for it. I hate Black Ops, Except for the tomohawk! Its awsome.
