CT Gamer pretty much '/thread' in his initial post.
I will instead contribute to the Adult swim discussion,
Robot Chicken: Unfunny + they steal jokes.
Aqua teen hunger force: Mainly good but can feel like a reaaaallly bad trip most of the time.
Metalapocalypse: Hideous animation and surprisingly little insight (i.e. injokes and references) into metal. Some of the songs are catchy though.
Xavier Renegade angel: Genius.
Tim and Eric: Genius.

"Adult Swim" is a programming block here on Cartoon Network. From 9pm to 5-6am, they show more "adult" oriented programs. Things like Family Guy, American Dad, and King of the Hill generally headline the program block.
To address the the topic, T.V companies, including execs, writers, etc, enjoy basing themselves on "what's in". The material writes itself and the ratings need not be earned through legitamate talent. Children's television shows are prime offenders, like with Cartoon Network and MAD, Adventure Time, and their latest offerings in general. Nickelodeon is 10 times worse with it. Almost all of their latest shows have their writings based on trends, popular ideas and memes. What's even worse is how wrong they get it. Usually they depict gamers as elitist losers or akin to the old skateboarder/surfer stereotypes (saying "Dude", "Bro", saying internet slang all the time). There are people like that but they are not the catch all image of "gamers". Gamers also don't go on wacky adventures all the time. Except to places like the Twilight Highlands, but that's hardly TV material. A gamer isn't someone you can usually point your finger at and know for a fact "Thar be a gamer". Gamers come in all shapes and forms, from a triange to a rhombus. It's like trying to find fans of "24", you can't simply pick them out. Another part of culture they get wrong is internet culture. They treat it like a playground but over the internet, with bullies who you can catch and a neverending source of plot devices.
The Cold hard truth is that the Internet is more like that back alley you warn your kids about. The bad part of town. You can get what you want, but it comes at price. There are things you thought you wanted to see but regret ever doing so. Those bullies will mug you and will never be found. Why do this? Like I said, it's nearly effortless to write for. The characters find themselves in a wacky internet related adventure, no different from say a magical induced one. Why give Fred a show? Easier, you can have everything but cut out the not internet part. Plus, you can use memes and internet ideas without paying a writer. It's like a gold mine. A creativity gold mine. Except, by the time this is all done Fred is a hasbeen and the show gets cancelled. He was not the first and he is certainly not the last.
TLDR: It's cause T.V execs like material that writes itself.

Who shouts at strangers in the mall?
I am disappoint, Crass. Very disappoint.

What is this "legitimate talent", and how can it be distinguished from "things I like"?

Shockingly, character conventions have less to do with reality, than with entertainment.
Also, funny story, the second you used the phrase "legitimate talent" you became, at the very least, an elitist; whether or not you're a loser is not for me to decide.

And lawyers don't stand up and dramatically shout "Objection!", but Phoenix Wright seems to make a habit of it.
Entertainment doesn't "get things wrong" in the sense that there are factual errors, it gets things wrong when it fails to be entertaining to its target demographic.

Not really. Its more that having a property with proven success is better than having one that is of uncertain value. Because, you know, "legitimate talent" isn't a real thing.

Life does not cease to be funny when people die any more than it ceases to be serious when people laugh.

who can blame him? they sell shirts with 4chan memes on them at fething hottopic, and these pretentious douchebags, like the one johnny yelled at are the reason why we can't have nice things on the internet.
