I believe in growing the economy, but I believe that the primary value in economic growth is that we are better able to provide for the least well off. This leaves me opposed to those on the left who vilify the rich, and those on the right who vilify the poor.
“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

I know what your trying to get at, if you think most votes for the left come from people who are 17 and under, you'll be wrong, because most kids at that age think around the lines of "Who cares about politics, I just wanna know who did the coolest 360 trickshot on MW3 last night."

I had read from various news sources, that there is an apparent tendency in the US, that as a person ages (and where they live) they tend to vote more conservatively as they age. In the broadness of the article snippets, it seemed as if the dividing line was around 30 years of age... Its almost like the "studies" showed that when we are younger we're like, "OMG!!! its soo horrible CHANGE CHANGE CHANGE!!!" and as we age, we're more like, "feth it, lets just not muck this up any worse for those kiddies behind us"
I'm a mix of the left with some socialism mixed in there. To be honest, Republicans and Democrats sicken me. There needs to either be no parties, or a third party. Campaign money of the same amount should be given to all the Presidential canidates, so that way it's not who has the biggest pocket book wins. The health care system is just bad....
But seriously, there needs to be a third party.

I am pretty much the opposite. I started out voting Republican, and as I am hitting 30 I find myself more and more liberal. For me, thinking "conservative" turned out to be a very naive mindset. I do find myself becoming more conservative in my lifesyle and my actions, especially as I mature in my Christian faith. So on a personal level I am very much conservative. But that does not translate into my political views.
An example would be this: I strongly feel that homosexuality is a sin and I would not choose that lifestyle. (Ignoring the debates of choose vs. born that way for sake of this argument , that is really not the point) But politically speaking I do not think that it is right for me to take what I think is "right" and turn that into law and force others to abide by my sense of "right and wrong".
Or just very, very disappointed in the tendency of both sides to play misery poker and villify economic classes.

I'm beginning to suspect it's more that people stay basically the same, but with each generation getting a little more progressive than the last, people just find themselves getting shoved more and more right as they get older. I mean, if a guy in 1960 has said 'gays should be free to do what they want without being chucked in prison, though they certainly shouldn't be able to marry each other' then you'd have been really progressive. Without changing his position one bit and saying the same thing now he'd be seen as quite conservative.
The problem with my theory is the shift to the right in US politics over the last three decades has upset the general trend. In terms of economic policy, Reagan would have been unelectable, and Nixon would be on the left of the Democrats.

Also, I dislike Ayn Rand, but that has little to do with the conversation, I just felt it should be said.
I mean actual anarchy, not the fake "I hate the world, let's burn stuff," anarchy, I mean anarchy as a state in which there is no permanent leadership, instead, leaders are elected as the need arises, and are immediately forced to resign when this crisis or disaster has been solved. There's some other fiddly bits, but that's the gist of it. It would never work in a large country, but it's nice to have ideals.

May I suggest virtual democracy as a solution to your oxymoron problem. All issues handled by referendum.

More have died in the name of normality than ever for strangeness. Beware of normal people.
He who asks a question is a fool for 5 minutes; He who does not is a fool forever. (Confucius).
None of the above. My views are more complex than "left/right/center".
I am right wing economically-- I believe that with properly efforced, effectively written regulation the free market is the better of the various systems for most parts of our daily life. I also am not sure I believe in most entitlement programs except for the very poor (I'm very much in favor of food stamps and no taxation for those at or below the poverty line for example, but I don't much like social security). I am however a liberal socially, as my arguments in favor of the civil liberties of minorities has shown. I am also not a liberal in the modern sense, however, because I believe in the civil liberties of being able to own firearms and do not hold extreme views on environmental or animal rights issues-- e.g. animals are there to be eaten and we should do what we can to make sure taht we will continue to have animals to eat, which includes supporting the environment to some extent.
So I don't fit any of your "left/right/center" definitions because the definitions are stupidly written.

The only issue I feel strongly about is religion mixing with politics. By all means lets talk about the issues, but keep your religion to yourself. I guess that puts me on the godless left.
I'm a total fence sitter, though as I get older, I'm developing some more left wing views (war is bad) and right wing ones (polish people who play loud music until 3am in the morning should not be allowed in the UK).
I think its pretty bad I don't really know the difference between left and right....
I've been told before, but I don't take that much interest in politics, which I do feel bad about. Although all i've had to vote for so far is local councillor, as I missed the last general election by a month or two, and the green man in our area is the best!!! Not sure I would necessarily want Green Party in charge of the country though, although to be fair they must have some policies that aren't centred around saving the world...
The reason the difference between left and right is hard to tell is because they frequently intersect due to left and right being overbroad terms.

Well put simply... extreme left = anarchy and extreme right = dictatorship. Basically, left is freedom and right is control. The reason you'll find a lot of people with "centre" views is that most think a little of both is a good thing
So you're saying that communism is extreme right wing?
