Well of course it will. 6th ed is due within the next 5 weeks. Codex releases are only ever on the 1st saturday of a month. So it would have arrived this weekend just gone if it was coming before 6th ed.

I'm not a 40k player (nor Fantasy), so help me understand, honestly:

Why do they not, like, announce these things in a normal way? Why 7 or 10 days before it hits the streets? I don't understand.

I wouldn't worry about that, Forge World don't raise their rices as much. So, the FW armies may be cheaper in a few years

That's nothing to do with playing the game. No one kows why they think this is a good idea. I've never heard ANY explanation, let alone a good one. There's a theory that they're shutting down on news to prove to New Line Cinema they can keep quiet over Hobbit stuff.

Well, I just told someone to wait with his next project until the new starter comes out. This is exactly the kind of thing GW want to avoid.

The idea is that GW wants us to keep buying products consistently all the time, with added spikes from new releases. Knowing about a new codex or rulebook months in advance tends to make players cut back on their purchases as they tentatively wait to see what the new rules are like. Think about how much (or, rather, how little) you would buy if you knew that everything could be invalidated in just a couple of months' time. GW wants us to keep buying, and then drop a new rulebook to give you a reason to buy even more to update your armies (and prompt those who weren't buying anyway, like me, to purchase those updates as well). There's also been mention by many people that GW is contractually obliged to keep a lid on rumours, leaks, etc. by New Line Cinemas over The Hobbit game, but I don't know exactly how much this impacts things like new rulebook announcements and so on.

I do think that a week or two is far too short notice, though. For something like a new edition, it really should be a month's notice, at minimum. I mean, they really could have gotten the hype machine started 2-3 months in advance of the rulebook release. Each White Dwarf could have snippets of rules that you can insert into 5th edition that gives a general idea of how 6th edition will work (though modified to fit into the 5th edition rules), and release a wave of models to accompany it. That way, you keep model sales up, get people interested in White Dwarf again, and increase interest in this new rulebook at the same time.

For example, you could announce that 6th edition 40k will be released in three months, and that any sales of the 5th edition hardback rulebook after that point can be exchanged for a 6th edition hardback when it is released. This first month could include the new psyker rules and a bunch of new Finecast psyker models for any race that has them. The next month could be basic flyer rules and a wave of flyer models (i.e. what we got this month). The month before release, you could have rules for emplacements (i.e. the rumoured "buildings" that you can purchase as part of your army) and some new appropriate models (bunkers, AA emplacements, trench systems...whatever 6th edition is supposed to bring). The month of release, you have a big spread about all the awesomeness of 6th edition, and show that you can now pre-order 6th edition 40k for dispatch a week later.

I don't know, it just seems that releasing little drips of "teaser rules" and models will get people excited and eager for more. As it is, your average GW customer who doesn't visit forums etc. would know little more than "something is happening next month", so using White Dwarf to help people look to the future (rather than focusing exclusively on the present releases) would help get everyone hyped.

1.) Because the 40k rulebook contains spoilers to the Hobbit movie, more obviously than the Hobbit novel.
2.) Because GW fears rogue copies more than lost revenue, so they keep all new releases secret, hoping that interest is so low nobody will care about a rogue copy.
3.) Because Tim Kirby gets his 1 Mio pound anyway, even with sinking revenue and customer numbers. Don't waste money on marketing and advertising.

The officially published reason is that people are more excited about new releases if they don't know about then in advance.

From which we can conclude that GW is either completely insane, or knows more about marketing than the entire film industry.

I think knowing the direction the new edition would be travelling in would help people know what units to be buying in and changing out, it would up sales prior to the release of the rulebook.

Also, releasing a 'beta' of the rules to playtest for, say, 3 months, and then release the edition proofread and playtested by the hobbyists would alleviate the FAQs and YMDC 20 page arguments.

It's reasonable. Does GW print overseas? If so, might make sense to warehouse and distribute books from someplace in California (assuming printing in China) then break up the order to ship to individual retailers and distributors. No point in shipping to Memphis and then having to ship again. This sounds like the kind of operation that is uncommon enough (Hardcover rulebooks being a different thing than a Codex release) that it would make sense to just use a 3rd party logistics company.

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.

By major warehouses, you mean GW. Because it is not at any distributor outside of GW.

Yes at GW, and I was talking worldwide. I'm pretty sure everything in NA goes through Memphis does it not?

Does anyone know for certain when the next White Dwarf will come out? It seems that there is no doubt that 6th edition will be released one week after the WD, but the question is, will the WD be available on the 23rd or the 30th?

I hope that the new edition indeed has some awesome flyer rules, otherwise flyers in 40K are overcosted by around 30%.

The next WD is on June 23. It says on the last page of the current issue. I saw it myself.

On a related note, I think its funny that people are pondering when the next issue comes out even when it says right there in the book. I saw a couple other posts asking the same thing on this and another board. Obviously, no one buys the magazine. And I can't blame them...

The GW facebook page of Amersfoort has made a series of new events on their page.

The one on june 30th just mentioned "the release" without ANY further details. If I were a betting man, I'd put my money on the 30th.
