I remember my first White Dwarf, it had an article on how to convert a Battlewagon into a Battlewagon with Blitzcannon, complete with templates for the card/plasticard for you to photocopy.
I remember my second White Dwarf had an article on how to make and assemble a Baneblade (all the templates for the card/plasticard included with something like 5 pages of instructions!).
Then there were the articles about how to make Coach Houses and Mine Entrances for WFB...

Those were the days...

I predict articles entitled "How to convert new models using two, three or even four of our nice shiny plastic kits" or "Seeing the forest for the trees - how to ignore the all the mis-castings in your new finecast models and just enjoy them from 4 feet away".

Not that I'm a cynic or anything.

I had the good fortune of meeting a lot of the new White Dwarf folks at Games Day Chicago. They were all pretty awesome.
Maybe some pictures of Games Day Chicago will actually end up in the White Dwarf, like the 20 ft. long Chaos Cruiser that Snake Eyes Gaming brought with us: http://snakeyesgaming.blogspot.com/2012/08/gamesday-2012-pictures.html

The encouraging thing out of all of this is that presumably they have listened to the fans, and realised the magazine was in severe need of an overhaul?

Not something that has happened too often in the modern history of GW. Will be crossing my fingers in any case, and giving a few issues a try.

Since one of the new staffers is listed as a "Digital Editor", does this mean we can expect a digital subscription option in the near future?

Or they read the comments section on their Facebook page every once in a while?

If only more people did that instead of jumping the gun and making finecast jokes.

I look forward to a new White Dwarf golden age as much as the next person but this is GW we are talking about... I've long since given up hope of anything good coming from them, especially not for any sustained period of time.

I hope that I can be proved wrong on this one, but I am not holding my breath (or opening my wallet) based on GW's promises.

I hadn't thought about that... Interesting. Either digital copies, or perhaps, digital add-ons.

This is exciting new indeed.

I really like the new blog name White Dwarf Daily. It's a much better fit then the old "What's New Today?". I always though that name was rather lame.

I'm sad that they'll be redoing the White Dwarf logo. It's so iconic and 'familiar'.

GW is obviously not perfect, but look at the last couple armies they have released and tell me that they aren't releasing quality ranges.

GK, DE, Necrons and DV. All solid ranges of minis. To say that nothing good comes from them is silly. Have they had some crap in that time? Sure. Have they also put out a ton of great kits? Yep.

I highly doubt it, but who knows with their recent foray into the iBooks store. She'll probably be doing page layout and choosing which photos to use or perhaps making / editing the YouTube videos.

I'm not going to argue subjective tastes (especially since I feel that only a handful of kits in those ranges are any good), however my comments were less directed towards the kits that they put out than the company, the IP and the way they go about their business and put themselves out to the public. Check out the context of my post

Maybe its been too long since I cared about WD... but I just read that whole thing as a justification for an inevitable price increase on the magazine.

I will remain positive and look forward to this new era of White Dwarf - I'm even looking forward to once again subscribing to WD.

How crazy is that?

I'm not holding my breath on it.

They come out with something like this every couple of years or so. "The New and Improved.." ends up being worse then the original.

Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

Really? Because I'm fairly certain a whole new staff and office is a bit different than any new and improved they've done before. Just saying...

Interesting, have to wonder if this is a by product of the 'we want to release more stuff quicker' going on at the studio.

I get mine each month here at the shop, so looking forward to seeing how it changes.

Since they're actually releasing rules, I might resub for the first time since the 90's.

This looks like good news. I'm excited to see what they might change/improve. Some of you guys are so cynical and negative it's sickening. Just quit if you hate GW so vehemently...

Quitting is for quitters

And just to note; you can like and enjoy the game, or background, or any other aspect, and not like GW. It is not like you have to embrace every aspect of something to be able to take part in it.

Or, alternatively, they've found ways of reducing the cost to them and are dressing it up as a relaunch in order to provide a bump in interest, because why miss an opportunity to sucker in a few optimists?

I myself, as a rabid cynic at heart, will be borrowing copies from said optimists(everyone knows one) for at least six months to confirm that it is actually an improvement and that they intend to continue it going forward rather than just in the first few issues in order to boost subscription sales.

Although, while I suspect the reason for the website blog chap being involved is so they can drastically scale back the actual blog content to just teasers with "See the new WD for moar!" every four lines, he does occasionally acknowledge that things like plasticard, insulation foam, and a capacity within sentient humanoids to make their own models and terrain all actually exist, which is more than you can say for most of the current WD staff.

I need to acquire plastic Skavenslaves, can you help?
I have a blog now, evidently. Featuring the Alternative Mordheim Model Megalist.

"Your society's broken, so who should we blame? Should we blame the rich, powerful people who caused it? No, lets blame the people with no power and no money and those immigrants who don't even have the vote. Yea, it must be their fething fault." - Iain M Banks
-----
"The language of modern British politics is meant to sound benign. But words do not mean what they seem to mean. 'Reform' actually means 'cut' or 'end'. 'Flexibility' really means 'exploit'. 'Prudence' really means 'don't invest'. And 'efficient'? That means whatever you want it to mean, usually 'cut'. All really mean 'keep wages low for the masses, taxes low for the rich, profits high for the corporations, and accept the decline in public services and amenities this will cause'." - Robin McAlpine from Common Weal

Here's the good thing. Somewhere along the line "they" moved out of the party line "we ARE THE HOBBY. LOVE US AND DESPAIR!!!" and realized something was wrong and something needed to change. They're trying something new and they're excited about it. That's a good thing.

Now I don't think I've so much as picked up a WD in 2 years let alone buy one, but I'll check out their next issue and if it's worth buying I'll buy it. It's really all you can do or ask of.

In advance---I skimmed this thread. Worrying about leaks from the WD aka leak about magazine articles. LOLOL R U SRS?

With over 43,000 pictures on Flickr now, it's virtually impossible not to find something inspiring in there and we'll continue to show your pictures in White Dwarf Daily. Incidentally, if you do upload something to Flickr then please make sure you email the pictures to us too - that way you'll definitely catch our attention.

So, will this mean that we actually can make money from Games Workshop instead of the other way around? Or are they conviently forgetting about copyright-issues & compensation? Even though you have taken a picture with a crappy point and shoot camera / bad setup you are entitled the same compensation as professional photographers. If you've uploaded pictures to their Flickr-pool, check what copyright settings you have on them. ( http://www.flickr.com/account/prefs/license/ )
