I'm told that existing subscribers will still be paying the old price until their sub ends or they cancel a direct debit sub.

The magazine itself was excellent right up until issue 310+ or so, when the editors decided that putting words in their magazine wasn't actually important,

Yeah it really didn't. One of the last issue I bought was 215 I believe. I have 227 or something like that that I got in an eBay auction, but I stopped buying before 220. 215 was the second issue in three months (the other being 213) where the so-called "battle report" was an isometric photo of a table, and a paragraph or two from the people playing it. Maps were gone. Discussions of army lists were gone. Turn-by-turn information was gone. I know it came back eventually, but the main draw for WD (for me) was gone, so I stopped buying.

I'm excited to hear about a new design for an ailing magazine, I personally hope that it becomes a showcase of the hobby again, full of great articles about painting, modelling, converting, playing and terrain.

They won't. Any articles will focus only on the things they sell. Every BatRep will take place on a Realm of Battle, and any terrain article will only focus on Official Citadel Miniatures Terrain. The hobby is dead. Long live the HHHobby!

That's the spirit.

Kids, the next time something might not go 100% to plan, especially when it's something that might not be in the total control of the guy running the event, just abandon everything and don't purchase it. Also make sure to tell everyone that you're not buying anything - as everyone is just dying to know how much you're not going to buy something over a minor detail like it not actually having happened yet - and give those toys a hefty big throw out of your pram while you're at it!

I'd rather have articles than army pictures. The latest WD had no Lord of the Rings content at all, and just a few photo pages on WFB.

--Chris

And this is why I bought this copy of WD and not the previous... WFB and LOTR bore the fething pants off me. I can't be the only one who feels like this, about any of the games they don't play. One of the big reasons why WD struggles to maintain a constant audience, you've got three fanbases, and the overlap between the three is NOT massive, covering those three universes and those three fanbases is going to be a thankless and impossible task.

I honestly wish the new and imporoved*TM* White Dwarf the best of luck though, and will be purchasing the first couple to test the water.

I, for one, am keeping (possibly foolishly) optimistic, that this new-ish team will bring about a positive change that will lead WD back into the glory days.

Well, I hope you are prepared to pay for it - the manager of my local FLGS has said that the price will indeed be increasing (in line with what was posted earlier)

I'll pay for it if I judge it to be worth the new price, but that's basically what I was saying. If they increase the cost higher than the quality justifies, I won't buy it. What I'm not doing is judging it before I have any information with which to do so.

Years ago they made the magazine thicker and put the price up, but after a while it slimmed down and the rice remained the same, and even continued to go up while the content turned more into pure advertising space instead of meaningful articles. Now the promise a return to good content and there's a price increase. A tacit admission then that they know it's crap because actually putting some effort in has raised costs presumably. Now to see if in a year's time the upswing in content remains, or if it drops off and the price remains up.

Aye, foolish indeed. I remind you of the Matt ward hate wagon. At. The end of the day, ward was being paid by GW. If GW had a problem with ward's stuff--which they did not--then ward would have been told to go mount himself, and do his job again. Thus, since ward was paid by GW, he was paid to do what they told him to do. I see the. Same again with WD. The team is on GW's paycheck, so they will do what GW tells them to do, because, hey, actually having a job that gives you money is pretty dang win. Love or hate the authors, it's GW were dealing with here, and GW,s top brass' heads are... We'll.... Not the brightest aparantly.

Sounds like tree song has the right of it. GW needs another cash grab, and needs to up the cat for reviving the catalogue.

Ok, I don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but:

Just talked to y FLGS owner and had a chat about the new WD. Apparently he was on the phone with GW doing an order and talking about the new WD. He says it will be *small form factor* magazine. I don't know what the official designation is, but is going to be about the size of the National Geographic magazines (?). Or, according to the store owner, the GW rep described it as 'about as big as an iPad'....

Well, the smaller format rumour gave a brief flashback to Citadel Journal, but there's no way WD could ever approach the amount of content CJ had. God, I miss that magazine.

Yeah, I actually forgot how much it changed, well I had a long break so I guess I just forgot what WD was like when I came back. One awesome battle report I loved was a 3 way battle between those black and yellow tyranids, dark angels, and orks, twas amazing.

I may resubscribe if the new WD has changed for the better

Not that long ago, either. I've a cutout poster of an Ork Stompa on my wall, which came out either with the actual kit, or Apocalypse.

They still do posters occasionally, just not that often. I don't know how often WD has had posters in it, but I know I at least got one with the new paints. The last one I remember from before that was probably the same Stompa one you mention, which came out with the Stompa kit. Before that... Medusa V? It's been slim on the poster front. I like that there have been things in the magazine like the Daemons update, but the last time I remember getting something in the magazine before that it was AoBR with a Nob and a Terminator.

I think the best structure would be:

1.) A showcase section, demonstrating what new releases/models there have been since the last issue. Yes, this is basically a catalog part. It's actually unfair to expect GW to not actually do this.
2.) Sections on 40K/WHFB/LOTR respectively, with general hobby updates/new rulesets if available/happenings
3.) Some sort of substantial fluff article, WHFB and 40k especially are both huge universes and with GW staff writers working on the magazine, making some sort of 2 page new material article 12 times a year is no big deal for them. Profiles of characters, a famous event/battle, and so on.
4.) A general hobby section. Terrain, sculpting, and so on here. Both converting/custom stuff and official GW projects are discussed
5.) Editorial(s) that can actually point out errors. Now, this is obviously a fine line. Something like "This ruleset is unfair and needs to be changed in the future" as opposed to "Prices are too high!" "GW IS THE DEVIL!" "FINECAST SUX" etc..
6.) Battle Report & Gaming scene in general
7.) A "what's new" with GW affiliates like Black Library/Forge World/THQ/FFG and so on section with interviews with authors/developers where needed/

For a ~190 page monthly magazine, this is all more then possible. Not going to advocate unfair and unrealistic stuff, like non-GW Miniwargaming be featured in it.

You mean the price hike RUMOUR started in this very thread with no evidence whatsoever?

You realise its GW right? You cant blame anyone for thinking they are going to lay the boots to us at any chance they get. "New" "Fun and exciting" and "big change" are (not so subtle) code for 'price rise'.

Rick Priestley said it best:
Bryan always said that if the studio ever had to mix with the manufacturing and sales part of the business it would destroy the studio. And I have to say – he wasn’t wrong there! The modern studio isn’t a studio in the same way; it isn’t a collection of artists and creatives sharing ideas and driving each other on. It’s become the promotions department of a toy company – things move on!

After spending twenty valuable minutes of my life reading that exchange over a women working for WD, I feel ashamed at being part of this site! Anybody else feel the same?

Back OT, I remain sceptical about any changes. This month's wargames illustrated was jam packed with wargaming goodness. WD has got a long way to go to catch up. And even if this magazine still turns out top be top dog, I'll still be ashamed to be seen reading it in my local supermarket!

Maybe you guys missed it two posts up.

The next person who mentions 'girl' 'Store' or anything else even remotely off-topic will be the recipient of a suspension.

This is one of the most ridiculously off-topic threads I have seen outside of the OT. So a girl is working at WD. Big deal, get over it, and for the love of crap it is not necessary to comment on her for pages on end in any way.

This thread is about the magazine and rumors about it's changes. The magazine and the magazine only. Not girls, not stores.

This is the last warning to you guys. Get it together.

I won't put any of my pictures on the GW Flickr because, if I understand correctly, you surrender your rights to them. I'm not having GW claim ownership of photos of my stuff to use in their publications and websites.

Dragging it off topic(?) regarding the Games Workshop Flickr-pool. As I've understood it, posting your picture to the pool is something between you and Flickr, not the creator of the group. Flickr claims some sort of right of use for your photos, in order for them to display your photos on their website and in their marketing. But the photos are still yours.

If any of your photos appear anywhere else, you are entitled compensation for your photos. It doesn't matter if it's on a private or commercial publication. It is still your photo.

So, in order for GW to be able to put your photos on their blog, their facebook page or in their pamphlet, they must have an agreement with you. Otherwise you can file a copyright complaint and/or sue.

From what I've read it's about £130 per photo. With extra money on top of that depending on where and how your photo is used. I'm not 100% on how it works in the UK though. Im more familiar with Swedish copyright.

It's a pet peeve of mine. I guess it kinda gets that way once you see your artwork and photos get used without consent.

I do hope that GW have thought about it and are prepared to communicate with the owner of the photos/minis before publishing them. Adding "outside" armies and minies with a short (or long) description to White Dwarf would make it much more enjoyable for me.
