A conversation I had with my fiancee while watching Ultramarines.

'So, who are these guys'
'They're Space Marines. Basically Warrior Monks bred to fight. their whole life is spent training to fight, or actually fighting.'
'Do they get paid?'
'No.'
'Do they get time for women?'
'No. They're chaste.'
'Do they get anything for fighting their whole lives?'
'No, they're warrior monks. Their reward is service in the name of mankinds Emperor.'
'They need to form a union.'

Observation from wife with an MBA:

"Let me get this straight: you put together models possibly change them using sculpting putty and 1,000 tools, paint them using 10,000 paints, memorize this coffee table-back-breaker-book, memorize this smaller but similar Codex and other ones your opponents use, cobble together terrain using 50,000 items of junk, argue incessantly over the finer points of rules, calculate army lists with arcane points values using excel or a dedicated database, models must look like they have what you chose, OH WHEN IN GOD'S NAME DO YOU ACTUALLY GET TO PLAY A GAME??"

It is not the dumbest thing I ever heard but a heck of an observation...

Had someone mention that at a local gaming convention this weekend, I pointed out that it in the end is much cheaper than the game he was playing(Magic the Gathering) because though there is a huge upfront cost after the army is built you dont need to invest much money besides the occasional new unit or maintinance costs(glue paint etc for repairs).

It's not really cheaper. I invested about $500 a while ago in Magic and I haven't paid a dime since. And yes, I have strong current Standard decks.
And Modern and a few others.

500 dollars buys a large chunk of an army that will never cycle out.

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

Not if you use that $500 for "core units".
My 100 space marines with bolters are still space marines with bolters, 5 editions after I started collecting them.

The models may have changed, but the core rules for them are essentially the same.

And? I haven't spent a dime (aside from drafts which I do about as often as I do 40k tournaments and the cost is the same - and I'm guaranteed to get at least 4 packs for Magic) in years. And even buying core units - I have 70 Genestealers. That kind of army isn't as effective in 6th, so it's essentially cycled out.

So we should compare Standard magic to games of 40k
vs
Legacy/Modern to Apoc Games of 40k

Regarldess if you want to play competitive standard you're looking @ 500+ on a deck.

If you want to play competitive Modern think about 600+

Legacy 95% of the competitive decks land base will be 500+ Decks altogether prolly around 1300-1500 sometimes more, especially if you want to play blue.

That's really not true whatsoever. We're straying really far from the topic, but http://magic.tcgplayer.com/db/deck.asp?deck_id=1062609 for example took 1st in a PTQ qualifier.

Thats not true about Legacy either - there are a lot of strong decks that don't need all dual lands.

Conversation with wife:

"What's your book about?"

"Spess mahreens.(the only way I can pronounce this now)"

"What colour are they?"

"Red"

"So not black like the ones you have?"

"No, red."

"And not blue like the ones that look like little smurfs?"

"No, red"

"So, what are the red ones like?"

At this point I launch into a lecture on the creation of the primarchs, the inception of the legiones astartes and the terrible curse that afflicts the blood angels, along with the tragic fate of their primarch.

I eventually stop talking, looking into my wife's glazed-over eyes.

Wife: "I like the blue ones"

After playing 4th edition for a good number of months, gaining confidence in the game slowly as my buddy was playing nidzilla to my space marines, a new player shows up. A young teen, 12-14 years old, comes in saying he bought a new army and wants to know if someone can teach him how to play. Having a fim-ish grip on the rules I offer. As he is bringing in his models I notice that to my horror they are tyranids. Turns out the kid happen to run nidzilla as well, oh joy <sarcasm>. I put on a good face and teach him the game, getting tabled roughly on turn 3 or 4. Afterwards I asked him if he had any questions and he responded thus, out loud and for the entire store to hear. "Are you new at this game or do you just suck?" The laughter was deafening.

"What is the best army" is always kind of a face palm comment for me.

"Can you build and paint my models for me?" I understand a lot of people aren't good with a brush, Emporer knows I haven't won any Golden Demon awards, but it just seems to take away from the point of the hobby. Little kids and friends I can help, but guys who are my age......I give them a couple links to painting tutorials.

Still not as fail as the question I was asked ( read the 1'st post ).

me: "I play Imperial Guard" (take out miniature and show him)

I don't deal with a lot of people who don't know anything about 40k on a regular basis, but I can tell you that the stupidest question I've ever seen on this forum is whether the Tau are too 'good' for 40k.
