Krieg are cool, but you must have a bit of a masochistic streak to go through that.
Though to be fair, if FW were to produce well armoured guardsmen to the same detail quality as krieg, I'd probably jump on them pretty damn quick.

The only thing close to GW prices are the Grenadiers, which are 5$ more expensive that the Kasrkin,
But that's before shipping&co :(
Note that the 115$ included all shipping&co

Not if you arm the russes properly.
You'd have to really overload them, plasma cannons that can't be fired with the main cannon anymore, hull lascannon and pintle stubber (that'd only hit on 6's if the battlecannon also fires), and dozerblade gets you 1400 something, each russ would cost as much as a Chaos Land Raider.

I love that little fact; the Guard is arguably the most special-weapon heavy army in the game, and how can you get said special weapons? Command boxes, and nothing else.
Meanwhile, Grey Knights get almost every option for 3 different unit types in a single box, a single box, I might add, that is only slightly more expensive than a 10 man guardsmen kit.
Not only do the guard get the short end of the stick in the lore, but in the real world too.

Ha. That's actually on the cheap side, each of my DKoK veteran squads costs about $150 since you can't buy special weapons individually and have to buy the entire upgrade set to get a single plasma gun. And then of course there's another $20-30 for a heavy weapon, even more for a transport.
And of course once you're done with the infantry there's the tanks, aircraft, tank squadrons, superheavy tanks, superheavy tank squadrons...
Though to be fair, if FW were to produce well armoured guardsmen to the same detail quality as krieg, I'd probably jump on them pretty damn quick.
DKoK grenadiers and engineers? Both of them have nice carapace armor.

I've considered it, but there's something about their aesthetic I'm not a huge fan of; I've seen them in person, and they're detailed and all, but I just don't care for them, and they're not really any better armoured than normal Cadians. I think it's the flightsuit look I don't find appealing.
Really, what I want is the metal Kasrkin model to become plastic and convertable/modular. Rather than paratrooper, I want armoured infantry suitable for armoured units.
Vaktathi wrote: Well, there's also those oh-so-lovely $15 blisters with a meltagunner and plasma gunner
Oh yes, those mono-pose metal models; I've got some of them, traded some paint and burgers for them, and they're alright (not at that price point, not by a long shot, mind you) but having so many identical models is less than desirable. I can only imagine how monotonous say, Steel Legion plasma vets would look.
Hence I went with buying those finecast plasma blisters; they're still overpriced, but 5 plasma guns for $12, rather than one and one gunner for $15, and usable on basically any Traitor/Loyalist troops is far better in my opinion. Not great, but better. For $24, you get the same number of guns as $75.

I have got two of each of them - absolutley HATE them, they are hideous. Quality of the casting is so poor compared to the plastic Cadians. I am trying to bash my own special weapons up out of the spare parts I have left over from the battleforce and squad I brought.
If you could get legs and torso's easily and cheaply (torsos are reasonably easy to get, lets arent!) you get enough spare arms and stuff in the boxes to make up at least another couple of squads!
I ended up using my Cadians as vet and Catachans as normal troops

I have to admit, I hate the money side of it, but no other army (except for maybe orks) gives you as much freedom with the modelling side if you decide you don't give a gak about your models being GW or not.
There's so many awesome infantry models out there that can be converted into beautiful Imperial Guard armies. I'm using all kinds of different models to get the look I'm going for, and loving it. I'm hanging onto a small amount of Cadians and Catachans for events that require "official" minis, but whenever I get the choice I will field my fully converted army. Yes, my army will probably cost more than a regular IG army. It'll also be MY army, and be completely unique.
If I had the money for FW, I'd probably start a DKoK army too. Those models are friggin gorgeous. I'm hoping that at Adepticon they'll have some of the Leman Russ turrets, so I can go crazy and buy a bunch and not care about shipping

I love the FW Russ turrets too, but then nearly all my army is slowly switching over to non-GW stuff.
Using Churchill's and Panzers as Russ variants, half-tracks form Chimera's and so on. So far five Panzer IIs have cost me less than three Russes.
I am going to try a 28mm scale Churchill with a FW turret and see how that comes out.

One great part of the hobby lost over the years was scratchbuilt vehicles. If you have the skill, foamboard, plasticard, greenstuff, Instamold pushmolds and thriftstore tanks work wonders. I'm not really playing anymore, but I'm keeping my guard. A $28 2000 point army is just too epic to get rid of.

Learn how to scratchbuild and that will keep costs down. I have found some great deals on E-bay. I have bartered with others at my flgs making scratchbulds for them in exchange for tank parts and other stuff. Being able to convert figures over helps too. All in all I have spent around $350 - $400 and I can field 4000 points.

Hum, might have to have a look. Will see what the fountain of of all knowlegde (Google) takes me to.
Would be good to get a decent tank that looked to scale. Having said that I am considering using 28mm Bolt Action minis take make the rest of my army - £20 for 20 squaddies from Warlord Games directly isnt bad and I have seen them a lot chaper online.
Just as shame they dont have any of the IG options like flamers etc but then they should be easy to scratchbuild.
I found the 1:35 Panzers look "right" with the GW Leman Russ autocannons as the main gun, almost looks like its about 120mm on them.

Yeah...I just built a chaos renegades army which involved buying all the parts of a cadian army *plus* all the chaos conversion parts for all those models. Talk about pricey. Spent close to $800 just on the infantry portion of the force and that was with 20% off all the plastics to boot...Already had all the armor I will use for the force and have co-opted my large collection of necromunda redemptionists for use as veteran squads for when I run the army using the IG codex instead of one of the forge world Vraks lists. So the actually financial cost for the whole army is well over $1200 when you add in all those parts to it.

I usually save up my forge world orders until I have enough to qualify for free shipping. The other bonus I seem to have found on that is that the bigger orders I make get shipped faster than those single unit/vehicle orders I have made in the past. So it saves the crazy overseas shipping charge and I get my models faster. Both wins in my book.

I have found 28mm (1/48) scale armored vehicles to be too small comparatively to GW's 28mm heroic scale. I use 1/35 scale armor for my IG and chaos renegades tank needs. Just got rid of my IG army recently and more recently dumped all the 1/35 scale german armor I had for it. PZIIs and PZ38ts for chimeras. A StuG III converted as a hell hound. A brumbar converted as a griffon. A hornisse self propelled 88mm gun that filled in nicely for a basilisk. a PzIII and PZIV both with short barreled guns for Leman russ tanks and a late model PZIV with longer barreled 75mm gun for a leman russ vanquisher.
For my renegades I have: 2 Japanese chi-ha tanks as chimeras; 1 Japanese self propelled gun as a basilisk with FW renegade crew; An Italian semovente 75mm spg as a bane hound; 2 italian M14/39 tanks converted as the flamer and melta hellhound variants each. 1 US sherman M4 as a leman russ and 1 israeli super sherman with 120mm cannon as a leman russ vanquisher. Really gives the army character because they aren't the "standard" models, but also are pretty easy to determine what the armored vehicles are as well.
Sold off my speed freaks army ages ago, but it used 1/35 scale US halftracks as trukks for transporting boyz, german hafltracks for gun trukks, a US M7 priest as a battlewagon and a defrocked priest/kangaroo as the warbosses battle wagon. Cover them in orkie bitz, parts and grot riggers and add in a ton of buggies and boyz on bikes and it made for a pretty cool looking force on the table.
The bonus is that tamiya, academy and dragon 1/35 scale armor kits are all exceptionally detailed, readily available in most any hobby shop and are enjoyable to build. Clutter them up with some extra bitz to tie them more tightly into the 40k universe and you are ready to go. **Edit**: And because of the detail involved in these kits I have less problems dropping $45 on one of these than $50+ on a GW kit with only the barest of details.

Solution: buy a Russ kit and a few WW2 Panzer 4 models. With a bit of plasticard you can make some wiked looking PZ4/Russ hybrids that make your army look unique. For infantry, there are a dozen or more companies producing figures to use as guardsmen. I hate how ever guard army looks the exact same. Guard is the one army where there are plentiful options for cusomizing your army with all the WW2 1/35 scale tanks and such. My Vanquisher is an M10 tank destroyer with half of a Russ side as a skirt and the Russ Heavy Bolter mount on the front. The open top has a modified shell receiver to load Vanquisher sized shells and actually fits the 40k guardsmen in the turret. Its slightly longer than a Russ and bulkier in the turret, but i will take the disadvantage to make my army look awesome. I have a 1/48 Conqueror as my Conqueror variant Russ and a few standard 40k Russes to complete my armored loadout. It looks pretty impressive on the table and i hope to get another M10 or two to make more Vanquishers (DKOK gets the coax on vanquishers, making them actually decent).

I'm a real cheapskate when it comes to gaming, but I don't regret building my 2000+ point IG force one bit. It is as expensive as you want to make it or as cheap (if you're willing to strip plastic models). I bought most of my guardsmen used and painted, but they probably averaged less than one buck each. Most of my tanks are in the 15-20 dollar range.
You can see the whole army here:
http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/images-24779-13756_Melk%2037th.html
Also, I heartily agree with Eldarrain. It's an easy army to upgrade, and doesn't tend to change much through editions unless you at some point decide to go from mech to Gunline or visa-versa. It's also one of the best looking armies to have a large collection of as ranked guardsmen are quite inspiring.
There's an easy fix for this. Trade bits for plasma pistols. Most marine players who have been in the game for a while have dozens of extras. Then mate them to flamers, another bit that's not hard to find. Bartertown, Dakka Swap, etc are your friend for these kind of things.
