Funny how I started my hobby, on my first "demo game" at GW. The GW employee lied about my save rolls so that I could feel good about my ultra-handy-dandy Ultramarines. And me, being the sap I am fell for it.
Well I'm enjoying my hobby now., so that wasn't so bad.

Pushy selling of the flavour of the month and advising naive gamers that something is amazing that is actually just plain awful for example the new dark angels flyer.
This really annoys me instead of saying hey you should get this for your army as it will benefit you most. They try to sell the most expensive kit no matter how gak it is. Of course if hsomeone wants to buy the kit because they like it that's fine but being misled by the person who is meant to be advising you is just wrong.

Unfortunately, a lot of the times, even the GW clerks won't really know what they are talking about. Some just give bad advice because they either don't really know the product or they themselves were given bad advice either from another employee or even from an ignorant customer! That's right. Not all sales people are experts in their fields. A lot of sales learn on the fly and many just regurgitate information that they have been fed by others.
However, once in a while, there are what I call the "used-car" GW salesman. He is actually the unscrupolous person who would say whatever he thinks the customer would want to hear in order to get the sales. But I don't think this type of salesperson will last in this industry, at least not if he wants to have repeat customers.

This. A GW employee actually told me that the 3.5 Chaos Codex was the worst ever written as it allowed for only one viable build.

Sales people everywhere are pushy. Back when KB toys existed, you were expected to push batteries and candy on every customer: buying a single matchbox car? Here; you need batteries and a roll of bubble-tape gum to go with it. FYE is the same way (music & entertainment store, for those who don't have one): buying a cd? Can I offer you 3 free magazine subscriptions (that they will bill you for after the first issue and many customers had trouble cancelling). Point is, most retail places do it, especially if they are in Chapter 11. I've heard FYE is hurting right now, KB toys and American Greeting (card store) have already filed C11, then closed, and all three of them do/did this upselling to the extreme. Maybe GW has filed chapter 11 and are surviving on the upsells for now, or maybe it's just standard policy to act as if they are in it. Point is, they'll upsell, talk you into things you don't need, and grab every penny they can from you. Do the same thing I did in all those stores: no thanks, I'm all set, and just grab what you know you need. Research first-it's your friend. Leaving product wrapped and keeping the receipt for needed returns is a good idea too.

There was a huge greeting cards store in the UK that closed recently - Clintons Cards. I was glad to see it go. £5 for a piece of card with a few words printed on it? Oh right, it's not optional on birthdays and christmas unless I want people to think I'm an donkey-cave? Those places were horribly over-priced.

It's always funny when they are right next door to a "Card Factory" store which sells a much larger range of cards from about 20p to about 99p which are just as good, if not better

There are some sales people who do whatever they need to to sell, but even at best retail requires you to sell, you have convince people to part with their hard earned money, in GW its even harder, you have to convince people to buy expensive pieces of plastic for a hobby.
It doesn't excuse the ones who sell a codex, to someone just starting out, that is just about to be updated. However I had good service, I remember when I started I wanted to go into Tyranid because I loved them from 12 years before when I was into warhammer, this was still quite a while before 5th ed tyranids came out, but close enough that they knew they were the next codex, and they did actively warn me about it.
But I've worked in retail and it does take it out of you, you think you know how people are idiots until you've worked in retail a few months,

Here's the shocking truth...sales people dont like you, they dont care about anything you have to say, they arnt your friend they just want you to buy your stuff and feck off so they can get their other jobs done.
Sales people get pressured into doing add on sales, they dont want to do it but they have to or face being sacked.
Me i refused to sell store cards and unneeded insurance to people who could not afford it and were too stupid to realise it was a rip off, but not everyone can intimidate their bosses into silence like me, we arnt all 6ft tall and able to lift 35kg over their head with no trouble.
I'm lanky and skinny and easily the weakest out of my friends and can also lift 35 kgs above my head, it's not really a feat of strength and kinda made you look like a try hard lol.... That's like a bag of dog food. Was that troll?
Back on topic I've had gw salesman try to convince me that pyrovores have their uses and lictors are the best anti tank in the codex..

Lying and retail are two sides of the same coin.. When someone asks me is the Child dog any good, what do I tell them? Do I tell them its made with day old cheese and chili, will fall apart in your hand and tastes like we just don't care? No I tell them it is delicious and they should get fries with that because its cheaper.
Why? Because you have to move the product.

There is just something about retail and sales that sucks all the life, care, happiness, and faith in humanity right out of you.
This is also why I never go to my local GW store. The people at my FLGS are actually pretty good people. But in short, yeah I have. Thankfully, in the IG there are few plastic kits that can't make a useful unit. More so, it's the tactics they try to sell me with that makes me hate them. I had a GW employee try to convince me an army of Penal Legion and Rough Riders was effective. He even tried to mathhammer me with it. But im sorry, when I single handily prove you wrong and your only final defense is "Cool modeling opportunity" I just lose faith...

Around the same time the Stormtalon came out a GW store opened up near where I live. Since the Stormtalon needs paint on the clear part I wanted to prime it first. I asked the employee about the paint on primer and how to use it just in case it was weird or something. He explained it to me as best as he could. He even said that if it didn't work like I wanted it to I could exchange the product for something else. This is an awesome GW employee. I don't play there, but I do go to the store to buy paints and books. I wish more GWs were like this.

The one that comes to mind wasn't so much a lie as it was not really knowing.
Was looking for a Big Mek, wasn't sure if I wanted one with a KFF or an SAG.
The guy and I ended up looking in the book, looked up the rules for both, and he made an off-hand comment about taking both if I had the points.
I was reading my Ork Codex later at home, and noticed that it was impossible to take both.
Fortunately, I ended up getting just the SAG one that day.
Edit: Mostly, though, when I'm in at the local GW, it's because there's something I want. So usually when the sales guy asks if I need help with something, I ask if they can help me find <product I'm looking for>, and then I buy it, and get out of there.
